For an artist that wrapped up a farewell tour less than a year ago, Paul Simon has been quite active on the concert circuit over the past couple of weeks. He not only played a surprise “pop-up” show at Oakland, California’s Fox Theater on August 9th prior to his headlining set at Outside Lands two nights later. Then on August 13th and 14th, he headed over to Hawaii for two gigs at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The second show featured a duet with Michael McDonald on the Simon & Garfunkel classic “Cecilia.

The Grey; Haywire; The Descendants
From the outside, The Grey (2011, Entertainment, 15) looks like just another tired riff on the dreary "man v (his own) nature" theme that in the not too distant past gave us the ponderous tedium of the David Mamet-scripted The Edge. In that self-important dirge-fest, an air crash left Alec Baldwin and (Sir!) Anthony Hopkins to sort out their manly differences in the North American wilds while being pursued by a clumsily symbolic bear. The Grey similarly ditches its mismatched airborne characters into an inhospitably freezing landscape where their interpersonal conflicts will be played out against a background of baying – and occasionally attacking – wolves.
Liam Neeson, who has recently morphed from admired thespian to existential action hero, plays the lone wolf-hunter, a marksman who understands the call of the wild: Le Samourai in snowboots, with a hint of Jim Jarmusch's underrated Dead Man thrown in for good measure.

I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!
10 – Young Adult
One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.
