Led Zeppelin wouldn’t have been the same band without drummer John Bonham. You could say that about any member of the band, but Bonham’s imposing beats — inspired by an early rock ‘n’ roll song that mesmerized him — were irreplaceable. That’s why the band decided to break up when he died in 1980 instead of soldiering on. For all the praise, Bonham remained modest about his drumming skills, and it’s almost hilarious how unassuming he was.

Even though he once lost to Karen Carpenter in a best drummer poll, Bonham routinely appears at or near the top of the list when talking about the greatest classic rock drummers. The self-taught Bonham became one of the best of his generation even though he never wanted or tried to be.

As much as fans might crave it, Led Zeppelin won’t be making any new music. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones gathered to jam after their disastrous Live Aid show in 1985, but that reunion crashed before it took off. Their one-off 2007 performance at the O2 arena in London was the last time we saw Zep’s three surviving members playing together. Since they won’t be coming together to make new music, Led Zeppelin fans might want to explore the work of these four bands.

Page said the key to Led Zeppelin’s first album was having all four band members share the spotlight. Not many bands can have their drummer or bassist command the group, but Zep was one of them.

John Bonham went from relative obscurity to international stardom with Led Zeppelin. One musician who hated the band was particularly harsh on Bonham, but fans craved Bonzo’s playing. His drumming was so powerful and revolutionary that you could pick almost any random Zep song and find a mind-blowing beat. Still, some rank above the others. Let’s look at five of Bonham’s best Led Zeppelin beats (in chronological order).
Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham | Richard E. Aaron/Redferns 1. ‘Good Times Bad Times’
Bonham introduced himself to the world on the first song from Led Zeppelin’s first album. And what a first impression.
Bonham always believed drums could be an additional lead instrument next to the guitar. He brought that vision for his drumming to Led Zeppelin and put it on display immediately on “Good Times Bad Times.” He hits the snare in time with Jimmy Page’s guitar,...

John Bonham never seemed to do anything halfway. The Led Zeppelin drummer purposely chose a kit with the largest — and therefore loudest — drums when he upgraded early in Zep’s career. Bonham paid 85,000 cash for a car rather than let a salesperson embarrass him. The inventive Bonzo wasn’t above borrowing from other drummers. Bonham copied one impressive part of his “Good Times Bad Times” beat and blew away the drummer he lifted it from by playing it in a more complicated style.

Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.

He never had a signature song the way his peers and sometime bandmates Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton did, but the genres that Jeff Beck explored throughout his career chart the changes in rock — and rock guitar — over decades. One of rock’s most physical technicians, seeming to enjoy wrestling with his instrument, Beck made his name with British Invasion pop. But not content to stay there, he moved into the in-vogue blues-rock of the late Sixties and then the harder boogie and fusion of the next decade. The settings changed,...

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, who is featured in a Reelz documentary about the Warwick, Rhode Island Station nightclub fire, which killed some 100 attendees of a Great White concert in 2003, has released a new song to honor the victims called “Stand.”
The song, one of 12 from Snider’s new album, “Leave a Scar,” is featured in “America’s Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List,” which chronicles the events leading up to and after the tragedy through deeply personal stories of fans who were there.
The Feb. 20, 2003 fire was caused by illegal soundproofing materials and pyrotechnics — 100 people died and more than 200 were injured. Some of those fans had met Great White lead singer Jack Russell earlier that day at a local establishment, and he generously offered to put them on his personal guest list to see the show.

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my...
