The Oscar for Best Film Editing could very well go to any of the five films that made the cut this year. The field includes “BlacKkKlansman” (Barry Alexander Brown) “Bohemian Rhapsody” (John Ottman) “The Favourite” (Yorgos Mavropsaridis) “Green Book” (Patrick J. Don Vito) and “Vice” (Hank Corwin). With three of these films winning the major precursor editing awards and the other two being strong contenders of their own, the winner of Best Film Editing is truly anyone’s guess.
Early indication was that “Roma” could pick up a victory here, considering its frontrunner status and its winning at multiple critics organizations. “First Man” also won many critics prizes for its editing including the Critics’ Choice Award. Neither was even nominated in the final lineup. “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “The Favourite” went on to win the Ace Eddie Awards for drama and comedy, respectively, giving us an indication that it might be...

Originally, Focus Features was set to make the Peter Farrelly-directed feature Green Book, but ultimately passed on the project.
Then Participant Media stepped up to finance the $23M dramedy about American pianist Don Shirley’s tour through 1960s American South, and the male-bonding that forms with his Italian American chauffeur, Tony Lip. But Participant had a distribution deal with Focus. That concerned Farrelly a bit because he knew Focus wasn’t wowed by the project.
Knowing Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks’ influence at Universal, Farrelly told us at a recent Awardsline screening for Green Book that he called his CAA agent Richard Lovett, “who is the greatest agent on the planet by the way; I’ve been with him my entire career. I knew he represents Spielberg.” He asked his rep “‘Any chance you can get this to Spielberg? I think he’s going to flip if he sees this.

Every awards season is basically the same, but always includes a few unique exceptions. One of those is Universal-Participant’s “Green Book.” The film has won major prizes and yet no film has been more beaten up, online and in the mainstream media.
The bad news: Some awards rivals hold onto the old theory that mudslinging is a valid campaign tactic. The good news: Voters ignore all that noise and vote for what they like, so “Green Book” constantly bounces back. It’s a variation on the old joke that nobody likes this movie except the audience.
Another signs of its popularity: five Oscar nominations in key categories, including best picture, screenplay and editing, plus two nominations for the great actors, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali.
Editor Patrick J. Don Vito says the film is “something special,” which doesn’t mean it was easy. One of the biggest editing challenges...

Last night saw an under the radar precursor give out its prizes, which in turn may have shifted one of the Oscar categories. Yes, Friday evening saw the American Cinema Editors give out their annual Ace Eddie awards. This yearly event usually can clue us in to what the frontrunners for Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards are. That may well be the case again here, though if that’s true, the Academy and its voters are going to be making an usual choice. They already did in terms of their nominees in the category though, so I suppose this is just par for the course… In a bit of a surprise, the award for Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) went to John Ottman for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has been on a roll since the Golden Globes, was the surprise dramatic editing winner for John Ottman at the 69th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
“The Favourite” (Yorgos Mavropsaridis), “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (Robert Fisher Jr.), and “Free Solo” (Bob Eisenhardt) took home comedy, animation, and documentary feature honors.
Ace is usually a great Oscar bellwether for editing (24 out of the last 28 years ), so Ottman now becomes the favorite for his deft balancing of the Freddie Mercury story (Best Actor frontrunner Rami Malek) with the Queen story under difficult circumstances when director Bryan Singer was fired and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. Ottman beat “Roma” director/editor Alfonso Cuarón and co-editor Adam Gough, Barry Alexander Brown (“BlacKkKlansman”), Tom Cross (“First Man”), and Jay Cassidy (“A Star Is Born”).

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

“I remember those days,” says production designer Tim Galvin of the time period portrayed in “Green Book,” so it interested him to “go back down that road a little bit.” Directed by Peter Farrelly, this Universal release tells the true story of how Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), a working-class Italian-American bouncer, took a job driving African-American classical pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour through the Jim Crow-era South. Watch our exclusive video interview with Galvin above.

“Green Book” is unique in that it was co-written by the protagonist’s real life son, Nick Vallelonga (in collaboration with Farrelly and Brian Hayes Currie). That first-hand experience proved vital in Galvin’s research, particularly when it came to recreating Tony’s Bronx apartment. “I had to be kind of specific about things with him,” he explains, “because it isn’t the entire life story.

January 8 was a great day for “A Star is Born” and Bradley Cooper. The neophyte helmer was nominated twice by the Directors Guild of America. He contends for the both the big prize, Best Director, and for the first-time feature award. Earlier in the day, the sound mixing team for his film had reaped a bid with the Cinema Audio Society.
These nominations mean that his remake of the Hollywood classic keeps its perfect track record with the guild awards. It had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, “A Star is Born” is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

Six films – “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice” — have been cited by five precursors. All of these but “Crazy Rich Asians” number among our top 10 Best Picture contenders. But could we be underestimating this comedy blockbuster, which is currently in 14th place on our chart?
The current roster is rounded out by “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which are both in contention at four guilds as well as three-time contender “Mary Poppins Returns” and two-time nominee “If Beale Street Could Talk.

One of the perks of having the son of one of the film’s subjects be its co-writer is that the production gets all kinds of access for research. That’s exactly what it was like for Betsy Heimann, who created the vintage ‘60s looks on “Green Book,” which chronicles the friendship between pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his one-time driver Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen).
“I had access to some fabulous photographs of Tony at the Copacabana with Tom Jones and Don Rickles and all kinds of characters,” Heimann shared at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, moderated by this author (watch the exclusive video above). “I had some pictures of his mother and [Tony and Dolores’] wedding. And I had a few pictures of the family.”

Having worked with Peter Farrelly on “Movie 43” (2013), film editor Patrick J. Don Vito was surprised to read the script for the director’s latest film, “Green Book.” “I thought, wow, this is really good,” he recalls, “and this is such a departure” for the filmmaker behind bawdy comedies like “Dumb and Dumber” (1994), “Kingpin” (1996) and “There’s Something About Mary” (1998). Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Based on a true story, this Universal release centers on Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer who takes a job driving classical pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a musical tour through the Jim Crow-era South.
See As ‘Green Book’ opens wide, will Oscar voters also go along for the ride?
Although the film deals with more serious subject matter, Farrelly didn’t leave his funny bone behind. “That was probably the biggest trick of the movie,” Don Vito explains, “the...
