The Happiest Millionaire (1967)
Weak despite the cast
Not a memorable song in the whole movie. The cast is strong but they lack chemistry. I normally like Fred McMurray but he can't fix this weak film. The butler is the only good actor in the film and he has real energy that makes every scene he's in better.
I guess this proves the point that the rich can make absolute drivel about their vacuous lives and it will be made into a film for the proletariat.
When you read the history of these people, it really is galling that they want us to believe they achieved happiness. The Gilded Age really produced some awful privileged people and they don't deserve to be glorified as so special.
This movie really reflects the low point in Disney films. Very formulaic. It's no West Side Story that's for sure.
A Small Light: Pilot (2023)
So powerful and simply moving
Most of us are familiar with the Diary of Anne Frank. But I never thought of the life of those who tried to save her. This is the story of a young woman forced to grow up quickly and demonstrate courage in a particularly beautiful way.
It really is worth it to read about her in National Geographic before watching the series but it isn't necessary. This shows a real person with foibles and weaknesses like us all. She's no superhero just a real person who barely survived the Great War and the Depression.
It's absolutely beautiful and I found myself holding my breath at the end. A definite must see. We all can learn something from Miep and Jan about love of neighbor.
Catherine Called Birdy (2022)
Just an OK girl power film with a horrid soundtrack
This is a modern girl power movie set in a historical setting but ignoring the history. It has funny moments but it's not memorable. What really hurts the movie is the soundtrack. If they just got someone else and redid the soundtrack this would save the movie.
The actors are good and sometimes very good. But again nothing special. Lots of problems with props that just aren't period correct.
The writing is ok also. Again it's not bad but it's a story we have seen over and over and over and over again. Really nothing unique.
So what you wind up with an average story, an average cast and a bad soundtrack. In the end it's just passable. But I can understand where young teens will enjoy it.
It's definitely worth watching once.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Complete fantasy
Worse doctor show I have ever seen. What hospital is totally empty of RNs, LPNs and CNAs? Why is this so vacant and quiet? Totally weird. Scrubs and Alien Resident have more realistic medical scenes than this weird show. And what about all of the weird dramatic stares and then cue the music? Pitiful excuse of a drama.
Avatar (2009)
Dances with Wolves in Space!
Visually stunning movie with a trite, tired story that we have seen done over and over again. I could barely sit through this long tiresome mess of a movie.
The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
Love the Beatles music - Hate this slow documentary
I can't believe how disappointing this documentary was for me. I absolutely love the Beatles music but I couldn't finish this slow slog of a documentary. After an hour I thought wow, this is why they broke up. It's so painful to watch friends disintegrate in front of the camera.
Sea Patrol (2007)
Rascist trash
I couldn't finish the first episode. Rascist garbage.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Watch out for plot holes
This movie is meant to entertain through violence and nothing more. There are some funny moments but not as many as Independece Day.
The whole time travel story is merely an excuse to take you to the violence. Because it is a time travel story it causes way too many plot holes. Instead of bringing people to the future a lot of other ideas should have been pursued. Why not bring alien DNA to the past so scientists would be ready to kill them? Why not save humans by bringing as many as possible back to the past? Goodness even Bill and Ted had better time travel ideas.
And where are the paradoxes? Wouldn't meeting your child in the future change your past and thus change the future? Are there branches in the timeline like in Marvel comics?
Ok enough of that....
Why didn't they at least build anticipation for the aliens like Cloverfield, Jaws and other movies have done?
Another problem- why would the entire world agree to a world wide draft? Are you kidding me? This world can't agree on anything!!!!
Finally why didn't they teach the draftees the vulnerabilities of the aliens? One guy was able to explain it in one sentence during battle. Couldn't the future soldiers tell them that one sentence before sending them to their doom?
Movie was so bad we stopped after the first hour because it was so stupid.
What a waste of talent )-:
Island of Bryan (2019)
More like another Karen got a show...
Unbearably hard to watch. More snobby people with fake conversations.
Saturday Night Live: Elon Musk/Miley Cyrus (2021)
Boring host - Terrible skits - Great weekend update
This was a successful stunt to generate interest in SNL but the host was awful and ill suited for the show. The skits were terrible with cousin jokes done repeatedly and kept falling flat. However the weekend update was awesome.
The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead (2014)
Excellent independent animation - not really for kids
If you think this is for your kids, then you are really mistaken. This is for adults. Listen closely to the dialogue. The animation has been smashed flattened and reimagined to really get you to think. It's abstract, weird, fun, and a bit terrifying. It's our innermost desires for love and beauty fighting against the filth and hate of the world around us. It's life.
LA 92 (2017)
Powerful - reflective - saddening
This was a powerful reminder of a time that I lived through. The riots in LA were absolutely horrific and it spread to many other locations. Even small towns and cities in upstate NY had riots and/or demonstrations. The comments at the end by Bill Stout from CBS news from the 1960s still ring true to this day and echo the ancient proverb "man has dominated man to his injury". Can we just get along?
Transplant (2020)
Another overwrought melodrama
If you want extreme sadness, then this is your show. Weak acting and poor dialogue that they try to hide by moving the camera in circles around the actors. This show definitely needs some serious attention - stat! Never seen doctors in real life argue and bicker in front of patients as shown on this show. It also seems to be completely missing any nurses. It's like watching a cop show where everyone is the captain. In the end, I thought to myself there's hardly one likable character in the whole show and I would be scared to death to be a patient at this hospital of losers.
Love Is a Ball (1963)
Predictable story but it's worth the ride
The story is very predictable but the cast is so good that it doesn't matter. Our family loved this movie. Sentimental sweet romantic comedy that is worth watching over and over again.
Amazing Stories: The Heat (2020)
Girlz in the Hood meets Ghost meets every sports story cliche
Derivative drivel- nothing amazing to see here folks
Mary Tyler Moore (1970)
Great it's day but now not so much...
When I grew up, MTM show was a weekly event. We never missed an episode. Great actors and a real element of its time. But in today's world there is a reason this show just doesn't hold up. Simplistic stories with stupid one liners that make you eyes roll. It's not as good as some Disney comedies. I hardly cracked a smile and laughed once. Compared to true classics like Seinfeld, Andy Griffith, Gilligans Island, Friends, Golden Girls, Sanford and Son and others it becomes apparent that this show survived only because we loved the characters. The writing is mediocre and comedy is lacking.
Doctor Who: Praxeus (2020)
Nonsensical story that is a complete waste of time
This is perhaps the worst Doctor Who episode of all time. Absolutely nothing in it makes sense. At times I felt that I was watching a dream sequence if the Doctor was suffering from the flu. How many problems are in this? Well let's just discuss a few....
1 - One character stands outside to watch the birds and he disappears and is never seen again and his partner doesn't notice at all.
2 - Aliens need to test an antiviral on someone so they decide to pluck an astronaut from his capsule during reentry! Then they hide him away in Hong Kong! I means its not like China would miss any street people if you just took them in for testing but hey who am I to judge.
3 - Missing astronaut somehow texts his husband his location but can't see to contact the European Space Agency nor the local police in Hong Kong.
4 - Antiviral is spread into the atmosphere at some absurd speed from a spaceship this is disintegrating. Really? Really? Too many stupid problems with this to even consider.
5 - Cop with no experience is able to pilot alien spaceship. Oh man, my brain hurts!
6 - Birds attack humans for the microplastics in their bloodstream. Say what? Every animal on earth has microplastics. Why didn't the birds eat bears, dogs, cats, birds, snakes, frogs, etc? Or better yet, why didn't they just head to the nearest landfill and fill up on plastics?
7 - Ryan picks up dead bird with his T-Shirt when he thinks it is infected and yet he never gets sick.
8 - Nearly everyone touches sick people and never get sick.
9 - Aliens have to check three galaxies to find other humanoids? And the only ones they found were on Earth? Say what? Do these writers have any clue how large just one galaxy is? I mean come on what the heck!
I hope you can get the idea because this is just a few of the plot holes in this episode. It's great to remind people about environmental issues but with poor writing like this who is going to care.
Supercar Superbuild (2014)
Proof you can make interesting cars seem boring
Cool cars ruined by terrible acting, terrible writing and contrived drama. Hard to finish a single episode.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Great fun
This is a real rollercoaster of a film. There's lots of tension that builds to a awesome climax and a touching ending. Ford Corporation really comes off looking like an awful place to work. Every executive is drawn to look like an arrogant cutthroat. Only Iacocca is spared. Ferrari was shown to be the company with true dignity and vision. I loved the movie and can't wait to see it again.
Good Morning World: If You Marry Me Today, I'll Marry You Tomorrow (1967)
Great cast - terrible jokes
I thought from the high ratings and the great cast this might be a hidden gem. It is awful. I didn't even smile much less laugh. It's easy to see why this lasted only one season.
Tall Girl (2019)
John Hughes knock-off but OK
Sweet little film that has bits of John Hughes classics like Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. It has Ducky and a rager party and teen angst.
Fort Apache (1948)
Cliche ridden western
This movie has it all - beautiful scenery, all-star cast, huge budget. But this movie has not aged well. Henry Fonda gives his most wooden performance. John Wayne isn't acting at all, he is just chest pounding bluster. Shirley Temple reads her lines like a four year old. And Anthony Quinn playing the part of Cochise is just plain offensive to all Native Americans and offensive to such a great actor. The script is awful. At times the dialogue is humorous and then suddenly stiff and proper. The actors never follow military decorum. I just kept screaming doff that hat! Also, you will see tire tracks in the desert.
My Three Sons: Countdown (1960)
Great episode with superb editing
This is a truly high quality episode that holds up against any modern TV show. Great story and editing. A classic by any measure.
Speechless: U-N-R-- UNREALISTIC (2019)
Touching funny and powerful
What a season finale! Blown away by the touching, powerful story. Best episode they have ever done and a true classic by any measure.
Bless This Mess (2019)
Show with great potential
One of the best comedy pilots I have seen. Great chemistry and witty writing. There is a bit of a lack in neighbors that I hope gets fleshed out with time and a larger budget. Reminded of great old comedies like The Egg and I and Mr Blandings Builds a House. Lake Bell and Dax Shepherd are fabulous.
