Trois couleurs: Bleu (1993)
Life Goes On
I discovered a new emotion from this film. This is a tragedy, yet I do not feel a sense of hopelessness or despair by the end. This movie's purpose is to illustrate "life goes on" and it does so in a beautiful way. From this film's music, cinematography, and plot, I found myself in a trance. I couldn't believe how fast this movie felt from its slow and somber pace. Definitely one to revisit someday.
The Princess Bride (1987)
Completely excellent
Great story with some incredibly iconic scenes. It's so perfectly cast and you can just tell that everyone involved had a great time making it.
Gekijô-ban Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Ressha-hen (2020)
Extremely entertaining
Very very fast-paced, satisfying, and awesome, especially for fans of Demon Slayer. It continues the story tremendously, revealing more about the world of demon slayer, and makes me excited to see what happens next.
Hera Pheri (2000)
Maybe a little bit lost in direction?
I'm not sure if it's because I don't understand the Hindi language, as some other reviewers have said, or if its because I'm not familiar enough with Indian culture or cinema. But this movie didn't do a lot for me. I thought it was a pretty good story, but it felt a bit like a Disney Channel Original Movie at times. It's very cheesy and overly simplistic for the story they're trying to go for. I know it isn't meant to be taken seriously, but it's difficult when the sub is leading you in one direction and the slapstick dumbos on screen take you in another.
The acting was actually rather good, at least from Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal.
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
Impressively captivating silent film
I loved Sunrise, it was extremely captivating. This film uses so many awesome effects that had me stumped. "How on earth did they accomplish that?? This movie came out 94 years ago!"
The story isn't anything to write home about, but the visuals really are what make this movie so entertaining. The level of care put into this film is very apparent.
My only issue with this film is that the funfair-date scene runs on for too long. In my opinion it did disrupt the flow of the movie.
Drishyam (2013)
Impressed Me
Drishyam seriously surprised me. It starts out slow, but if you stick with it things get really really good. I mean, I guess it's a mystery movie, but at the same time you're never really in the dark about what actually happened. That's a really impressive line to walk on. Also, the acting from Mohonlal as Georgekutty really impressed me, he just looks so natural on screen.
Of course, this movie contains the usual Bollywood curiosities. The cheesy action scenes and sound effects, the poor subtitling, and the questionable possibility of the story. Just don't take this movie TOO seriously and you really will enjoy yourself.
Paris, Texas (1984)
Good for film-lovers
Sure, it's slow paced, but it stays entertaining. This movie holds a somber tone almost the entire time, but that allows the brief smiles and laughs to shine through. It's well written, the story is pretty unique as far as movies go. Kind of an anti-romance? The actors all did a great job, especially Hunter Carson (the little kid). This movie is ARTSY, and that's where its high ratings really come from. The cinematography, the metaphors, the outside-of-the-box directorial choices. I would argue that only those who call themselves film-lovers will truly appreciate this movie.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Snow White: Simple and Great
The first full length animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is certainly a masterpiece. The animation is stunning, the music is timeless, and so on. To be honest, each scene is more heartwarming and cozy than the last. Besides the first and last five minutes of the movie, nothing bad really ever happens to the main characters. That's a refreshing change. If I have any gripes with the movie, it's that dumb Prince Charming guy. We first see him when he creepily sneaks up to Snow White and startles her. Snow White obviously flees, and Prince Charming has the nerve to be surprised. What a dope. Snow White then fantasizes about him for the rest of the movie (for some reason) until he shows up again at the very end. Somehow, he's even stupider by then. He kisses Snow White's corpse on the lips. A few things are wrong with this. First of all, I'm pretty sure that's illegal, for a number of reasons. Secondly, corpse germs are a real thing. Once Snow awakens, she runs off with him into the wilderness. I'm pretty sure he kills her, because we never hear from Snow White again. There's not even a bad Disney sequel about her. Now you might be wondering, why does Snow like this guy in the first place? Well, apparently she's only fourteen, so I guess it's just her teen hormones tricking her mind. Also, apparently there were supposed to be a bunch more scenes of Prince Charming in the middle parts of the movie that just didn't make the cut. I guess Walt realized that the Prince is such a simple transparent character that we didn't need any more scenes to explain his motivations. Anyway, besides it's little kinks, the movie does hold up incredibly well in the 21st century, especially considering it was made in the freaking 30's. The (mostly) lovable characters, along with the brilliant talents behind the scenes, make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs one of the greatest Disney, nay, one of the greatest FILMS of all time. It's certainly the most watchable 30's film by today's standards. P.S. Doc is definitely the best dwarf!
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Great film, only one fault comes to mind...
It had solid performances, beautiful visuals, surprisingly funny humor, good sequences and a well-constructed story with good characters...but I have one problem: I don't think Po's fighting skills were earned. Pretty much the whole movie it seems like he sucks at fighting, and he never really gets any better until near the end the fight with Tai Lung. Here we see that even Po is surprised when he suddenly starts fighting well. We can see Tai Lung's punches tickle Po, with this weird blue magic energy stuff. It seems like Po never even learned how to fight, but the dragon scroll, or his destiny, or something starts fighting for him, which left me a bit unsatisfied. Still, this little annoyance doesn't take away from the overall experience.
I give Kung Fu Panda an A.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Bored halfway through
This movie starts out really nice and charming. I really liked the characters, music, basically everything. But when the dog-bark-chain thing started the whole movie went downhill. I mean, talk about needing screen time! After the stupidly long bark-chain is over, the movie picks up again. But seriously, you expect me to believe the owners are overjoyed at the thought of owning 101 flipping dogs at the end?
