The Big Ugly (2020)

Want to watch a classic gangster film, look elsewhere
9 October 2020
Where to start with this nonsense! With real heavy weights like McDowell and Perlman, I thought we would have some substance, but it looks like a cheap payday was on offer. Jones can't act, so when he appears as the main character, you know the film will struggle!. I am two thirds finished, it's so poor I'm thinking of switching off! I can't think of one positive from this film, cheap, nasty film, with no plaudits!.

A nineties classic
21 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Few people know of this film, for me it introduces a young Gary Oldman, who stands out in this star laden movie. This came out the same time as other huge movies, so it is a virtual unknown. But I urge you to watch it, for not only Oldman, as an unleashed, crazy mobster, to whom life is always lived on a knife edge. But for Sean Penn, who delivers a double sided policeman, living on his nerves working undercover in extreme conditions. Then Ed Harris, a polished mobster, who I feel never gets justice for his abilities. This is genuinely a top mob film, gone largely unnoticed, which deserves better, (even just for the arson scene with Oldman and Penn), scary, yet electric!. A must see film!.

A movie masterpiece
21 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
From Brando to Pacino, this movie exudes class, Pacino a relatively unknown actor, who grows from a reluctant mafioso outsider, to boss. The story that grows is simply one of the best that converts to cinema, the scenery, the era, the cast, all contribute to a stunning three part drama. Personally, Brando gives a master class in timing, delivery, to the extent we can all see, he is the boss, in this star studded film. I will leave you with this advice, please , watch it a few times, there are pieces of the film you will miss, it's only after reviewing it a few times will you pick up on the nuances that make this epic a stand out.

Ghostbusters or wallet buster
21 March 2017
I wanted to watch this movie, without the prejudice I had heard about, so I ignored all the negative comments and gave it the respect this franchise had built up from the original. Wow, where to start, well positively, I felt it started brightly, the haunted house theme, sat well with me, but then in came the main characters , I've never seen a film die so quickly, extremely unfunny script, acted by extremely unfunny actors!. Somebody, somewhere looked at this project and signed off at least $200 million, to make this!. Some reports state $500 million had to be made to make this film profitable , after all bills including marketing!. How they managed to get most of the original ghostbusters to have bit parts in this amazes me. It tries painfully hard to be slap stick, but in the efforts to be funny, it seems to have lost all communication with its audience. If it was meant to be a disaster movie then it achieves this, it's the only movie were I hoped the ghouls would win and kill off all the main characters !!. Just to prevent another film!. A big budget film comes with great responsibility, this one is as responsible as a one year old baby. Thisis without doubt one of the worst I have ever had to endure, to sit through to the end , to me , was a major accomplishment. What were the producers thinking!!.???
