The Gay Bed and Breakfast of Terror (2007)
A Gay Old Time
I saw GB&BOT this weekend as part of the Frameline festival in San Francisco. It was a lot of fun and much better than I might have expected. I was thoroughly entertained and I could see this becoming a gay cult classic, with its mix of sexy actors, slasher parody, drag / camp sensibility and poking fun at conservatism. Viewers who are not clued into some gay cultural references may initially find the movie less accessible but I think could still enjoy it.
If you'd like to see it, I asked the director and it is due to get a theatrical release later this year and will be available on DVD in the fall.
I Am Legend (2007)
While the Alternative ending I liked better, overall I am disappointed
I guess I expected too much, but this movie was just silly. Its one thing if a movie is trying to just be a horror movie or whatever, but when it tries to pretend logic and science I become a lot more critical. I also found Will Smith completely unbelievable in his role as 'soldier scientist' - perhaps with another actor in the role I might have liked the film better.
I better liked the alternative ending with the creatures exhibiting relationships and love to each other. And the shots of the wall full of all the photos of 'monsters' the good doctor had killed in his quest to fix everything, to make up for the deaths of his wife and daughter.
The original ending just seemed silly and manipulative forcing him to be martyr while claiming he was listening to god suddenly. All the manipulative "god stuff" in general really annoyed me, too. I could tell right from the beginning they were going to use that tactic.
Overall, I think the movie was silly and unbelievable and I would not recommend it. If you want a good zombie movie, there are tons of better films out there, funny or serious.
Sunshine (2007)
I hated how it suddenly...
I love science fiction and I was excited to find this movie and see it had good ratings. The production values were fairly high at the beginning, I liked the spaceship and it seemed believable to me. It was tragic and beautiful and well executed like 2001: A Space Odyssey and reminded me a bit of the best parts of Silent Running, too.
My partner and I both had some trouble with the idea of the sun dying so soon to our current times when there is no explanation given. Current science says the sun should be around basically as it is for another 5-6 Billion years.
I was liking this movie OK until the point at which it suddenly turned into a horror movie and provided no real explanation for anything after that. Why is the evil character blurry all the time? Where does he get his super strength and evil genius when he is supposed to be completely burned up by overexposure to the sun? Also at that point the camera work became completely impossible to follow.
Then there is the extreme silliness with the computer not telling anyone that there was an unexpected and unidentified person on board the ship suddenly - it was like pulling teeth to get information from the computer BEFORE it was unplugged. AND how come they couldn't rescue the other guy(s) once the airlock was damaged- there was plenty of air and seal left on the original mission's ship for the psych officer to leisurely go burn himself up with sun.
I also think that naming the mission Icarus was completely silly. Icarus FAILED in the end - he died from flying too close to the sun. Naming not only the first failed mission but the 2nd one the same thing - its just unbelievably stupid as a name unless you want the mission to fail in the end.
