The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live: Gone (2024)
TWD has pulled it off
Granted this is a spin-off, but it's still TWD and the show has been in the gutters for years. Somehow, The Ones Who Live has pulled off the impossible and breathed new life into this stale franchise. The quality of the first two episodes are on par with some of the best episodes TWD has ever produced. I was worried that there woukd be a slump in the second episode but it really was as good as episode 1. From the acting, to the story, the progression and the way I have felt watching these past two episodes, its a return to form that rivals some of the classic episodes from seasons 1-5. Truly remarkable and a giant kudos to everyone involved. I truly care about The Walking Dead again and that makes me happy.
Ahsoka: Part Four: Fallen Jedi (2023)
The best episode in an otherwise mediocre series.
I wanted to like this show, but there's not much to like. The characters are bland and the plot is moving at a snails pace. Thankfully the plot did move a bit more with this episode but considering we're at the halfway point, I feel like not much has happened.. Sounds familiar (cough cough Obi-Wan, Bobba Fett, Mando S3) there's just no substance in story telling with this show. Just mostly flat boring characters who I don't care much about. I like Ray Stevensons character but his wide puppy dog eyed apprentice is laughably bad. Are we supposed to be afraid of her? Her dialogue and character portrayal are flat out terrible. Whenever she's on screen I cringe.
I also have a major issue with Disney shows sidelining their protagonist for less interesting side characters. They do it all the time, just name the show something else if your protagonist doesn't have the most screen time.
Lastly and most importantly, I love that tease Thrawn in the trailers as if hes a major character, but now I'm certain all I can expect is a 2 min cameo at some point in the finale. This show is the Sabine show that will probably serve as the prequel to the return of Thrawn in some other show. Woefully unimpressive and pretty over star wars filler shows.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 22: Guns for Hire (2023)
We're in trouble if "this is the way"
TV series like this better double their episode totals for each season if there's going to be this much useless filler. 8 episode season and I feel like nothing has happened this season. The plot hasn't progressed at all.
My biggest complaint is how little this episode felt like earlier "The Mandalorian" seasons, non of that space western atmosphere. It didn't even feel like star wars for that matter. It was a sci fi detective mystery episode for young children.
Enough with the celebrity cameos, I couldn't take the show seriously and lost all immersion when I was staring at Jack Black and Lizzo as King and Queen of fairy/alien la la land. Lizzo isn't an actress and Jack Black isn't Star Wars material. Christopher Lloyd's character was criminally underused and basically useless.
It's been a rough season as a Mandalorian viewer and fan. At least we given Andor recently.
Ojing-eo geim: Kkanbu (2021)
Heavy hitting episode.
Bring Kleenex before watching this episode. A great episode that will leave you in shambles.
WandaVision: Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience (2021)
Split down the middle
This is going to be one of those shows that divides viewers. Half of us will love it, half of us will hate it. I can't fairly review the show because there's clearly something mysterious going on that we don't quite know yet. However I do think the 50/60's sitcom shtick is going to get played out real quick. The odd choking scene was the best part. It made me feel uneasy and I wasn't expecting to feel something like that watching a Disney plus feature. I'm intrigued, but I feel like the payoff won't be worth this odd mystery. It seems pretty obvious this is just Wanda creating alternate reality post Vision's death. Well find out.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Criminally underrated gem
20 years I've known about this movies existence and just never got around to watching it until now. What a fool I was to wait this long. The movie is not perfect, but it's truly something special.
Katherine Isabel and Emily Perkins have such good chemistry as dark, suicide pact, goth teen sisters.
Ultimately it's a great dark story about the struggles of becoming a woman, and also becoming something a little more.. hairy. Some good laughs in it too.
The ending crushed me however.
I really wanted Ginger to make it. I know if I had seen this movie around the time of it's release, when I was in high school, I would have had such a crush on her character. Now in my early 30's, I saw a lot my younger self in her and her sister (eccentric "woe is me" high school behavior), so it was a very sad ending for me. However, it adds to the film I believe. Makes me a proud Canadian to watch a movie like this. Wasn't expecting to be blown away by one of my Halloween-a-thon movie watches.
