Love in Bloom (1935)
A Charming, Underrated Romantic Comedy! Dixie Lee Shines!!
This film is one of Dixie Lee's most well known films. She essentially came out of retirement to make this film and "Redheads on Parade" (her last film), with both being released in 1935. While George Burns and Gracie Allen receive top billing due to their popularity, they are supporting characters in this movie. Gracie Allen is hilarious in her scenes! I feel like Dixie Lee and Joe Morrison's performances are under appreciated and underrated in this film, especially by some of the reviewers. Dixie's facial expressions, timing, singing, and chemistry with her co-stars are excellent! She was a very talented and beautiful actress and singer and often doesn't receive the credit she deserves, mostly due to the fact that she retired to be a devoted wife and mother after making about 16 films. She tends to most frequently be referred to as a mere footnote in her husband's (Bing Crosby) story, which isn't quite fair. She was very talented! In this movie, she plays the "bad girl," yet she also has this sweet, cute, innocent, yet mischievous way of presenting her character on screen. Joe Morrison plays the naive, love struck "good guy" that chases the "bad girl" who feels like she doesn't deserve him. It really is a pretty cute, simple, yet effective and enjoyable plot that was meant to brighten people's lives during the Depression era. Don't listen to the naysayers and do yourself a favor and see this film! It is still out there on DVD and can be found relatively easily.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
The Best Queen Mary/Queen Elizabeth Period Film So Far!
I just got back from seeing this film (it is only playing at one theater here in Knoxville, TN) and I really enjoyed it! I didn't find it to be as boring as some other movies from this time period, this was mostly due to th me acting of the film's main characters Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth. Saoirse Ronan's timing, emotion, and delivery of her lines really made me sympathize with Mary's story. At the same time, you could see a lot of parallels in Queen Elizabeth's story that really connected the two in a unique way. Obviously, Saoirse Ronan is playing the lead and does a fantastic job, but we get to see Margot Robbie play a role in Elizabeth that we don't typically see her in (one that really showcases her dramatic acting talent). She does a fantastic job as well, and almost steals the show! The fact that they had to use prosthetics to make her appear less attractive is a compliment to her beauty, but she is much more than just a pretty face. I won't get into the plot (because I hope if you're reading this you'll go see the movie), but I felt pretty moved and satisfied when the credits rolled. That is saying a lot coming from me because I am very picky when it comes to what I'll pay $10 to see in a theater these days. It does have a few social issues in it, but they are relevant to the plot and the movie does not obnoxiously shove a political agenda or social justice in your face (nor does it sacrifice a good plot for it). It wasn't too much and it was relevant to the story. The costumes, sets, and visuals are awesome! I also enjoyed the cinematography. Overall, in my opinion, this movie is worth the ticket price and is also one that I will purchase when it is released on Blu Ray!
Hostiles (2017)
A Gritty, Realistic, Heavy, yet Refreshing Western!
Wow!! That was all I could think after watching this film. It hits all over the emotional spectrum....anger, sadness, pain, happiness...all of it. For the most part, the movie is very heavy in terms of its emotional weight, similar to Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." It is refreshing to see something original and new come out of Hollywood, especially in the Western genre. In my opinion, this is one of Christian Bale's best performances (Oscar worthy)....and he has a lot of them. This film is loaded with talented actors and actresses and while the pace is somewhat slow at times, it makes up for it with the dramatic and tense scenes. I was constantly on edge wondering what is going to happen next. I will add that I watched this movie on BluRay, but will be purchasing the 4K version for my home theater. It looks fantastic on a 4K television (even in just BluRay)! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up! You won't regret it!
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Better than The Last Jedi, but still flawed
I just got back from seeing this film on opening night. After being extremely let down with "The Last Jedi" I lowered my expectations for this movie. With that being said, the movie was OK, I'd even say it was GOOD, but not great. The positives: the cast was pretty good, I especially enjoyed Emilia Clarke's and Woody Harrelson's performances. Donald Glover's was OK, but not as great and as hyped as the media built it up to be. Negatives: Disney's continuation of pushing their political agenda at the expense of the story. I felt like L3-37's story arch was forced, similar to the Canto Bight storyline in "The Last Jedi." The character had a few funny moments, but was way too in your face with the whole SJW stuff. Also, at times, well most of the time throughout the movie, I just couldn't picture Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo. This was mainly due to his look and voice. He wasn't horrible, but he didn't really impress either. This may seem like something minor, but I thought the other Wookies in the movie looked weird...one of them reminded me of the Jack Link's Beef Jerky Sasquatch...it was just weird looking. The prequel trilogy Wookies looked better. Overall, I enjoyed the movie more than I did "The Last Jedi" and it was decent. I wouldn't pay to see it twice, but I'd probably watch it a second time if it was on Netflix or in Redbox. I still think Disney needs to put someone like Dave Filoni in charge of Lucasfilm, similar to Kevin Feige's role with Marvel Studios.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
A fresh, original blend of genres that results in a new cult classic!
This film is a great example of what Hollywood is sorely lacking these days: Originality! Like other reviewers have mentioned, this is slow burning western/horror flick that keeps building the suspense until the finale. It's not an edge-of-your-seat thriller that is loaded with action, but it has enough to keep your interest. It has more of a typical western feel to it in terms of character development. The dialogue is spot on for this genre. The acting is superb and plot is genuine. I think that it speaks volumes about the script given the fact that the actors signed on for minimum pay (that means they WANTED to be in this film for the script and plot). The gore is definitely there for the horror fans, although I would say that if you are seeking a lot of gore, you may be disappointed. It does have some that is pretty graphic. I definitely would not let children or even some teenagers watch this, its an adult movie. If you are a fan of westerns, I think you'll like it a lot. If you are a Kurt Russell fan, you will not be disappointed (this was his first western since Tombstone). Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox make an excellent supporting cast and demonstrate their acting skills well. This is a new cult classic!
