Makeup (2023)
Clever writing, well cast, purposefully ambiguous
This film perfectly illustrates the purpose and value of the indie space. This is one of those odd gems that creates dialogue in areas of everyday life that many aren't even aware of. This is the case with Makeup. Interesting story, narrative, thoughtfully unsensational, unashamedly ambiguous, naturally funny and (without giving any spoilers), leaving all with the warm and fuzzies.
It's well cast, with the protagonist (and Writer/Director) Hugo Andre showcasing a measured performance, supporting the more flamboyant side of the story, by actor Will Masheter. Enjoyed the awkward chemistry between them on screen and confident this will lead to greater things for then both.
The Northman (2022)
Painful drivel. Like walking through thick tar
OK, so it's a bit like walking through thick tar, but I forgot to mention the hair and skin the tat pulls off as you're wasting through.
Not sure how this got such a great rating. So many enjoyed this, but I found it sensationally farcical; like an ill-educated/intentioned teenager trying to tell a complex story but missing the mark from the outset. Save your time, you went get those hours back.
Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World (2021)
How is the rating so low? Everyone I've spoken to about it, loves it!
This movie was recommended, and I will be recommending to everyone too.
Well shot, perfect angles and light, and the music matches everything seamlessly.
A humble girl with Aspergers, inadvertently showing the world how rediculous Trump really is.
This is an insight to the life, troubles and passion of the generational champion for Climate change.
Easy to judge a book by its cover, but Greta's strength is in her works. She wanted to DO something that could make a difference, not just talk about it. We all need to DO more, and how great that our symbol of that change is a teenage girl with Aspergers who had a gift of reasoning and strength in her words to move listeners to action.
Is so apt that her psychological condition rejects popularity, as she has had to develop a coping mechanism to help her handle large crowds.
Will done to the film makers. You've captured her passions well.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Ben Stiller. Bravo!
We watch movies for all sorts of reasons, but mainly to be inspired. This movie has so much heart and is so perfectly executed. A definitive health check on what's important in life with a healthy underscore of adventure that is a set apart from the usual action and adventure. It's real, warm, imaginative, clean, almost visceral. Not sure how anyone can dislike this movie. One for the collection. Bought!
Hulk (2003)
The better Hulk movie!
Comic Fan boys, and the initial critics looked way past the mark with this movie, and missed the sheer art of good story telling largely absent from so many of the Marvel universe. Yes the CGI is dodge, and the comic screen sharing is not too everyone's taste, but the actual story is great and so much better than the intro of Abomination. It's a well pieced together movie and thoroughly entertaining, with great performances from Bana and Connelly. I mean Bana is really good at acting angry, freak, it must have been a little unnerving filming him at times. So much better than Norton, (though he's an amazing actor, but he's not a patch on Bana in this role). This has to be a cult classic, while Norton's Hulk will be quickly forgotten. Great comic style, great acting, great story, great music, best intro to the Hulk.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Searching for depth and meaning without finding it.
This movie developed so many opportunities for new and interesting territory, but in an obvious effort to avoid cliché at all costs, it failed and ends in empty disappointment. Bored throughout the movie.
After Life (2019)
Bitter sweet symphony...
... and it's live." In a way this show really is" live", as its not fantastical or sensational, just simple and real, human and inviting. Warm, crude, real, stiking, understated, hilarious, humble, cringing (of course) and simply brilliant. So sad its only 6 episodes long. The best of Gervais by some margin. How on earth did he manage to cram in so much humanity unto such a tiny brief, set, cast etc etc. The antithesis of the shallow block buster movies we've become so accustomed to, and breathes life steadily back into a what has mostly become a stale industry. Even when great stories are told, somehow the industry cocks it up with something that looks like it's going to be great as the content is so strong, and then leaves the audience wanting because the offering had been spoilt by industry politics and economies of selfishness. Some how, it feels the blend of Netflix and Gervais have resurrected something I thought was lost. Well done! Bravo!
Salt (2010)
A sum of improbable scenarios. Yawn zzz
Feels like the movie was written and directed by blend of a frustrated teenage girl and immature state propaganda machine. Predictable, childish yawn fest. I know so many Americans who feel as frustrated as I do about this stuff, yet somehow this stuff keeps getting churned out. Yawn. Very bored now. Let's focus our energy on cultures that actually have something interesting about them instead of giving air to pompous, vane, (un) "American" ambition. This movie is proof of just how our of touch rich America is to have funded such utter tosh!
