I Care a Lot (2020)
Please stop portraying people as super heroes!
I didn't enjoy a single moment in this movie except for the ending.
I am seriously sick and tired of human beings being portrayed in the movies as super heroes. I am sorry, but no gender is capable of destroying a mafia all by themselves. I understand the strive for positive discrimination, which I fully support, but please do it realistically. Or start paying women and LGBTQ actors as much as heterosexual men, which will be a much much better strive than portraying gay women doing unreal things!
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Brilliant mystery/drama focusing on a mother-son relationship
I watched this movie very recently, and until 6 months ago I had not even heard of it. Shame! I will definitely watch it at least once a year from now on to make it up.
I guess my favorite part of this movie is the non-linear narrative technique, which confuses you on the chronology of the events, especially in the first 15-20 minutes. For instance, we watch the main character, Eva, having crazy fun at the tomato festival in Spain at the beginning, but in the next scene, she is living a miserable life in a poor house. This type of narration and editing naturally makes you more curious about what happened to Eva.
Tilda Swinton played astoundingly (1) a mother who is raising a problematic child, and (2) a miserable woman that has been excluded from the society; and while she is acting that astoundingly, the director Lynne Ramsay performs a wonderful directing. Therefore, all you have to is nothing but enjoy this feast.
I would strongly recommend this movie if you are up for a nerve-shredding drama that puts a mother-son relationship under the scope.
Weekend (2011)
One of the best movies that portray falling in love in the most realistic way!
Even as I write these lines, I can feel sadness running through my veins. Shot in 16 days with only 10-15 people, this movie is one of the best movies that portray falling in love in the most realistic way. There is not a single second that is superfluous or phony. I congratulate each of those precious 10-15 people who contributed to the production, but first and foremost, Andrew Haigh, who is the director, screenwriter and editor of the film. You are amazing!
Almost the entire movie was shot in natural light and real living spaces, which is my favorite part of the movie; because while watching the movie, you forget that you are watching a movie, and instead, you feel as if you are listening to two men sitting in front of you. Yes, it is an LGBTQ+ themed movie, and it proves that love knows no gender. Those who claim otherwise should watch this to educate themselves.
Frankly, I have watched very few films that were shot so well with such a low budget. I hope you will watch it too and like it as much as I do.
Midsommar (2019)
Garbage with some beautiful frames
I apologize to the fans of Ari Aster, but I didn't like this movie. There are two things that I appreciated: (1) the shooting technique of the car ride scene, which I was already familiar with thanks to Hereditary, the first of movie of Ari Aster, and (2) the beautiful landscape of Sweden!
The movie has been categorized as horror/thriller, but I disagree. There are at most 3 disturbing scenes, but that's unfortunately not enough to thrill you. On top, Ari Aster inflated the script with cliches that we have seen many times in other horror movies, and consequently, anybody who has spent a bit of time with movies can easily guess what will happen in the next scene.
As I said, the only thing I like about this movie is the cinematograpy, which is not really the success of this movie, it's rather the beautiful nature in Sweden. This usually occurs to me when I watch Woody Allen movies; every frame is like a painting that you might consider hang on your wall, but the rest is garbage.
Azizler (2021)
Nothing but a disappointment
I have been impatiently waiting for this movie since the first day I heard about it, because I love every single person, who is in the movie. However I didn't like the movie.
I believe the movie looks like a great project on paper, but for some reason the directors and writers failed to convey that to us. There are some ridiculous scenes that have no place not only in this movie, but in any movie. I watched every second of it with the hope that it would get better and everything would make sense in the end, but unfortunately I finished it quite unsatisfied and utterly disappointed.
I don't understand how absurdity is very popular in Turkish movies, yet nobody has ever used it deservedly. For instance in this movie, you see absurdity being used excessively and very unnecessarily so that it gets impossible for you to get involved. It is also partly because of the characters that were written down and dirty.
One of the writers Berkun Oya already proved his great ability to write thanks to very succesful series Innocent and Ethos that he wrote himself, but for some reason he could not show this ability in this film. Collaboration of the directors Taylan brothers with the actors Engin Gunaydin & Binnur Kaya was also much better in Vavien, which is one of my favorite Turkish movies. Therefore Stuck Apart is unfortunately nothing but a disappointment for me.
La La Land (2016)
A series of beauties that is simply mesmerizing
Thanks to a wonderful video that I came across today showing Damien Chazelle tapping the cameraman's shoulder to give him the signal when to change the view, I watched this movie again. I didn't like it when I first watched it in 2017, but this time I finished it crying and loving the movie!
I think the reason I didn't like it first time is that I'm always prejudiced against musicals and there is not a single musical that I like, except this movie. Therefore I need to warn you not to ignore this one just because you don't like musicals. I already realized in Whiplash (another great movie from him that he shot 3 years before La La Land) that Damien Chazelle has an amazing talent for music, but in this movie, he uses music in a way that there is a great harmony between the music and scenes, which makes it impossible for the audience to imagine the scenes without that music, or vice versa. This movie is simply a series of beauties that mesmerizes the audience. Of course, we should also appreciate the cinematographer, because it is obvious that every frame is meticulously planned and every detail is thoroughly considered (see the "Another Day of Sun" scene, see the famous "A Lovely Night" scene, etc.).
By the way, Damien Chazelle shot this movie at the age of 32 and is the youngest director to win the "Best Directing" award at Oscars 2017. Insane! Finally Emma Stone <3
