The Menu
Appetizer:
Trying to entangle us in a relationship between the two characters boarding the boat, who seemingly "do not belong" creates a rather exciting starter, though looking back at it, you can't help but realize it's the classic case of wishful thinking and hope for a better plot.
You don't get bread:
Or butter. Or anything else of substance for that matter. This doughy loaf of a film, with a concerningly underbaked script takes you on a multi course journey utilizing such technics as uninspired cinematography, lazy acting, predictable dialogue and on the nose obvious butter knife stabs at the "elite". Poorly cooked, poorly served, no tip.
Main course:
The events of this movie progress as follows. Advanced apology for the spoiled plot. After the party arrives to the island and settles in their seats, the writers decide to take us first to death and after to a cut off finger. As we all know, this is the only proper escalation, as one can die, but one can not not finger.
We find ourselves observing as a spy camera on the wall a pseudo intellectual lunatic interact with victims that don't seem to really care for life either way. What more do you need to keep you on the edge of your dining room seat, so close to slipping off and leaving to not have to watch this boredom any longer? Nothing. Yet you proceed to ingest (not eat, very important) this flickering celluloid further, as you are as well, content with your fate.
The burger:
Unlike In-n-Out, this island restaurant only has an "In" - no "Out". The entire time this slow paced detached, delusional and diluted idiot sandwich of a film makes everyone trapped. Until it doesn't. At some point it decided to just allow, more so - encourage - our main patron to fetch a thing in the dark by herself and not supervise her moves in any ways. And as she proceeds, she finds that one thing that sets her free - a photo of the Chef flipping a burger. Excited as a teenager ordering animal style off the secret menu, Anna Taylor-Joy flips the menu on its head and orders a medium with cheese. Oh what joy do you experience watching her act taking a bite of the round sandwich, like she's never had a burger before in her life. Not too hungry, she takes it to go.
Desert:
Seemingly our group of elites has developed stoicism beyond anyone's comprehension. Not only did they understand, but they have also accepted their fate. Not only are they burning in fire, but they have also developed a complete disregard for the fire that burns them alive. Ladies and Gentlemen - Mark Mylod, Seth Reiss and Will Tracy have defeated the injustice of the elites with a simple peasant S'More.
