Don't Look Away (2023)
Decent attempt, a solid and quick horror flick
This movie isn't a new classic. Its a lean and mean horror movie based on a video game. Acting from the main lead is the best, the rest are a bit iffy in delivery.
Its basically about a woman who witnesses a gory murder when some thieves hijack a truck and find something sinister inside of a box being transported. She isn't sure what she saw but the thing inside begins stalking her and her friend group, and no one believes them.
Direction is solid, its a supernatural horror thriller rather than a slasher. It has some good set pieces and anxiety for the most part, but there was also budget limitations as two visual effects scenes seemed a bit off.
Overall if its ends up on youtube for 5 bucks or a streaming service, horror movie fans will get a kick out of this one.
The Reservoir Game (2017)
Not the most accessible doc, and it shows
I saw this Korean documentary film on Netflix. I was trying to clear out every Korean film on there and came across this one. Its about an investigative journalist who is trying to find a slush fund of a former president.
The movie is shown in 5 chapters, buts its not the most exciting subject matter. Its all about funds and business jargon, and the only parts that kept my interest was the segment in Canada (where I live). Other than the documentary is a tad long at 100 minutes, doesn't offer too much in the way of thrills or resolution and isn't very exciting.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Not bad for Number 3
Spiderman 3 is a very decent movie. Much like its predecessors, it is rich in story and is an adequate comic adaption. Sam Raimi definitely knows his stuff when it comes to making movies like these.
Most critics and viewers will talk about how this movie is the weakest of the three, or the best of the three. This movie is neither. It is entertaining, keeping you on your seat during the fights and blends it with story and character development. It also has its flaws.
Most Spidey fans will see this movie because of the villains, this one stars Venom, Sandman, and the second green goblin(Harry Osborn). True fans of the comic will not like how much screen time is given to Venom. He is very underused and for good reason. Sam Raimi was coerced to include this character into the movie, making it seem convoluted with too many things going on.
Tobey Maguire seems out of his comfort zone when he dons the black suit and changes his entire personality. It doesn't fit well with the he is portrayed. The characters who are Peter's friends, often do quirky things and dance and sing, which some people dislike.
Not being a cinematic masterpiece, it it still worth seeing, either going to the theatre or waiting for the DVD release. Anyone watching and liking the first two movies should check this one out.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Different, but pretty good
I saw a viewing of X-Men: The Last Stand the day after it came out. I must say, that it lived up to my expectations. Most people say that Brett Ratner ruined the series by making this movie. They are wrong. If people actually watch and learn, there is a moral in this movie. The plot of the third movie is that there is a "cure" for mutancy. Some mutants rejoice and take the cure willingly, others are outraged and want to destroy it. If you had mutant abilities that made you different, would you really want to take away what made you different? The other aspects make this movie enjoyable. There is not a lot of character development, as lots of new characters are put in and some characters are drastically underused. Even though this movie was not as good as the second one, it is worth seeing.
*** out of ****
War of the Worlds (2005)
This movie didn't quite cut it
This movie was a real let down. It truly was. The trailers and commercials only show the good stuff, but when you watch the movie, it leaves you feeling disappointing and hollow.
The overall movie is really good, but Spielberg leaves out too much from the book. The son of Ray Ferrier is Robbie, and i really don't like him. I wanted him to die. And he probably should have. The last thing we see is Robbie walking over to watch the army fight the tripod, and a massive explosion occurs, and all we see is the robot on fire, and still alive.
The end really sucked, and all of a sudden they show Robbie is alive. There is enough suspense and acting to make it a good movie, but it just could have been better.
