The Revenant (2015)
God giveth, God taketh away. (Minor spoilers)
After winning the Oscar for Birdman last year, Alejandro González Iñárritu takes the viewers into a much different setting with The Revenant. The Revenant is the story of Hugh Glass, remarkably portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who is left for dead by his fellow fur- trappers after he encounters a bear which terrifyingly mauls him. The scene is undoubtedly one of the boldest, gut-wrenching and wonderfully captured scene the Hollywood has ever done.
There is also a sub-plot here, which shines light on the Natives (Arikara) about how they once held all of America and are now just an endangered species on the brink of extinction as one of the natives says in the film : "You all have stolen everything from us. The land, the animals."
One of the recurring theme in the movie is that how the elder member does whatever he can to protect his family. This theme is not only restricted to humans, but also to the animals which is understood when the bear slashes Glass in an attempt to protect her cubs. The skulls of the bulls, which appear many times in Glass' visions, symbolize the same theme. Bull or bison, is mostly referred in Native Indian traditions to a strong, powerful animal which never backs down from a struggle and always strives to protect it's family.
Tom Hardy plays a brilliant villain, who though isn't always wrong, but has little to none redeeming qualities making him a cold- hearted, harsh and an uncompromising villain. The rest of the crew don't have major involvement in the plot but play their roles perfectly.
The aspect of the movie that excels and stands out most is its beautiful cinematography. Emmanuel Lubezki has once again done an incredible job capturing beautiful imagery and landscapes completely immersing the viewer in the setting. I could feel every cold breeze as it passed, every splash of water and an overwhelming feeling after looking at the beauty of nature.
In conclusion, The Revenant is a pulse pounding, absorbing and visceral journey which perfectly captures the time period and the setting. It is a pure survival story providing a simple plot which is perfectly executed with every actor playing their roles perfectly so viewers can connect to them and every shot is gorgeous enough to move the viewer inside and keep him seated for this incredibly epic and mesmerizing journey.
The Revenant deserves a 9/10.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A deftly-created sci-fi masterpiece! Kubrick at his best
Being released in 1968 does make this film old but it remains gold. It is undoubtedly fully deserving of the number 1 spot on my list of top movies of all time. The score is finely tuned and adjusted to the visual imagery in the film. Visually, Stanley Kubrick takes us to new extents and shows us unimaginative aspects of nature. The space looks absolutely haunting and breathtaking even though the movie was released as back as 1968. The movie may come as a confusing tale to some folks, but nevertheless its complexity is fully necessary to give the viewer the ultimate pleasure of the whole wide space. The movie is very thematic and raises up larger than life questions which define our place in the universe, our struggle for supremacy, our evolution.
In the end, Stanley Kubrick has brought us with a film which is unforgettable and is sure to create buzz for times to come.
My score : 10/10
Shutter Island (2010)
A wonderful display of tragic emotions, violent feelings and one's existence.
The film is a masterpiece from Martin Scorsese. It completely blew me away. It is one of those movies, that are dark, witty, ferocious and ultimately satisfying. Leonardo DiCaprio shines in the cold-blooded physiological thriller. True action-lovers may be dissatisfied with the pacing, but this movie is still worth the watch. Although, second viewing would be least likely once the plot is uncovered, but one time view is enough to praise the narrative and its characters. The writing is well-crafted and the dialogues give the viewer the feeling that he's watching a AAA film.
This movie is a must watch for those folks who love mind-bending, questioning and thrilling films.
Predestination (2014)
A Classic tale of Time Travel enhanced by new ideas and paradoxes
I loved this movie. Though, in the beginning, it might be a bit slow and boring for some action-lovers as the person is describing his story but soon the story starts to have a grip on the viewer providing a much interesting plot. Ethan Hawke is not at his best here, but doesn't disappoint either. In fact, Sarah Snook plays a mysterious girl , and her role is beautifully played by her. The score is satisfying.
But the movie demand's one attention and full focus. Those who may not be caring about the plot, may be left disappointed at the end, because the climax provides a knockout twist that explains the movie as a whole and is guaranteed to have an impact on the viewer.
Overall , a wonderful time-travel flick, which is most likely to reward the viewer if he/she is paying great attention towards it.
My score : 9/10
Inception (2010)
Brilliant display of human emotions and feelings.
This film has got what it takes to build a masterpiece and most probably , Nolan's best work to date.
The film is well-crafted, brilliant dialogs, and magnificent character developments. If u haven't seen it yet , watch it immediately. No matter whatever genre you like , this film will keep u entertained and thrilled till the end. The narrative is sublime and is multi layered highlighting each character's progress and the action sequences are brilliantly shot. At the end of the near two and a half hours , you would be completely satisfied and amazed by terrific performances mainly helped on by DiCaprio , spectacular moments and the narrative that's gonna have a deep impact on you.
This film has got the brains and visuals to be the blockbuster you have been waiting for.
Fight Club (1999)
I am Jack's feelings of amaze and wonder.
Fight Club's the most fun I've had in years. Through David Fincher's almost perfect adaption of the novel to Brad Pitt and Edward Norton's performances, Fight Club is top notch at whatever it tries to achieve. The film has those moments of mystery and sense of curiosity that will keep you at the edge of your seats until the mind blowing finale.
And even after that , you might wanna watch the movie again or even thrice , because of the numerous clues hidden by Fincher in the movie.
The movie is filled with thought provoking quotes and the score also does a fine job to give an overall chilled vibe. Lastly , there are some funny references to movies you've watched and let's just keep quite on that for the sake of not spoiling the fun.
This could well be , the decades most wanted and most talked about film.
Fight Club gets a 9/10
