Wednesday (2022)
The Harry Potter and Stranger Things crossover
Where to begin.
Plot: it's basic and a little old school, bit I like it. The show runners did a very good job and getting you to wanting to guess who's doing what. Who's the killer? Who's the master? Well done. Episode 7 is kinda useless but I'm giving it a pass.
Script and dialogue: This is where it takes a bit of a dive. It's pretty good, but the progresse lingo kills it. You're in the middle of a conversation... You're sucked into the show... then...BAM! PATRIARCHY! It's like little knives being stuck in your back while trying also trying to get a massage. For example, why can't they say "parents" instead of "moms" when talking about Eugene's...you know, parents. It's not the normal way to speak and kills the immersion that they actually did really well in developing. We get it, we don't need to be preached at. Straight white men are evil. Fine, let's move on with life. Ortega argued with the writers about certain things that were out of character and thank God for that or it would've been so much worse. I'd even argue that the liberal speaking points are out of character. Also, why so stoic? So many of the characters are over the top stoic that the show limits itself emotionally.
Casting: Casting was really good with a few exceptions.
Acting: Mostly fine for something that would be considered a decent TV show. There's a few moments though that are so odd. The part where Weems is stabbed in the neck. She didn't flinch or try to defend herself or anything. It's so weird. When the sheriff radios for other units, the cop says all the tires were slashed on their patrol cars. I guess other vehicles don't exist. When Crackstone is killed, why doesn't the first stab from Bianca do the trick? Only for the most mediocre stab from Wednesday to actually finish him off. Was the sword enchanted (bad script)?
Character progression: This is the stinger though. There was virtually no character progression. This is sad because a great way of getting viewers to get super attached to and love a character is to watch them grow. Or fall apart. None of that happened. The best acting in the show was actually by Percy White who played Xavier. He was the only character going through a visible struggle and showed any type of development or emotion. I know Wednesday is basically emotionless, so that's difficult to judge, but Ortega did a great job as well.
Music: Really well don't. It didn't take away from the story or overshadow anything.
Everything else was really good. Set was decent and costumes were fine.
Overall it was pretty good, though, a bit over hyped. It got more viewing hours than Stranger Things but I think that's just indicative of how thirsty people are for a good story. Fixing the dialogue and character progression easily makes this a 9 or 10. Netflix writers can't help but get in their own way though.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Boring. Pretty. No story. No charisma.
So, it's a well shot show and the scenery is really beautiful. That's where the good stuff ends. The story is so fragmented, slow, and uninteresting that it's difficult to follow. The actors and actresses are very bland. There's no charisma or personality. I'm not saying they're bad actors, perhaps is bad directing. There seems to be a LOT of slow motion for some reason. Some shots linger on an item or on a scene for just a bit too long. There's nothing for me to spoil even if I wanted to as there's nothing here. It's just a pretty, but empty shell of a story. Speaking of pretty, while the graphics are very nice, I'm not sure it feels like they're really in Middle Earth. It's a huge miss and a very expensive one at that.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Omg, so bad.
SPOILER ALERT: It's terrible and super cringy. The writing is ATROCIOUS!!! The CGI is so bad! It's a waste of a well liked comic book character. They take the idea that she is better then Bruce at everything and instantly. She's perfect, she's in control, she needs no one and nothing. We get it. She's unlikeable in every way. For example, when they're throwing the boulders. He throws one. She beats him by a bit and is smug and pretentious. He then throws another one absurdly far but she mocks him for it. So it's fine for her to be in a pissing contest b but not him? Ok, whatever. Oh, and her breaking the 4th wall doesn't work as well as it should.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Missed Opportunity
I don't understand the double standards that Disney has. It's preachy, poorly written, bows down to religion but still manages to get the woke message in. They disrespect their other shows, all the other heroes, men, Kamala's own culture, America. There's not much that they low key don't hate on. And her friend, the white kid who helps her, poor guy is friend zoned for life.
I don't think people would have issues with it if they just would put aside their nonsense and make a good show.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Boring
I don't know how this is getting such high reviews. The script is bad. The acting is bad. The effects range from good to bad. The editing is bad. They don't tell a compelling story. I kept falling asleep in some of the episodes. I don't know. Is it good for wasting some time? Maybe. But I don't have that kind of time. Will not be watching season 2.
Bigfoot Family (2020)
Child indoctrination through boredom.
We could've make it. Terrible dialogue. Even without the obvious big oil narrative we wouldn't have made it much further. Voice acting is bad. Graphics are ok. Animals are super annoying. There's no reason at all to watch this.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
What a waste...Nostalgia Cash Grab
Ugh...I love the Matrix. This movie just doesn't cut it though. I give it a star for the CGI, a star for Keanu Reeves, a star for Carrie Moss, and a star for the cat. The story is pretty much not anything I ever thought I'd see and it really only goes to show how out of touch the Hollywood elite is from the fans and normal people.
This one isn't about Neo at all. It's all about Trinity and they may as well have said that she is the ONE. Some of the character changes are ok, but it's not the same. It's whatever though since I know it's tough to get back all the original characters. The analyst character and story was weird and Niobe's character was dumb. Some of the fight scenes were ok, but Neo only went X-Men and created a shield the whole time. Like, ok yeah we get it he can stop bullets.
Oh yeah, and the analyst using the term "bullet time" was junk writing. They just wasted a great opportunity.
Lost in Space (2018)
Great show, 1 huge flaw.
First, great show overall. I love that it's suspenseful and a good story that the family can watch together without it being too "adulty." It proves a show can be good while not having to resort to more adult themes. Not that I'm against those, just nice is all.
The flaw: Dr. Smith and her whole story. I absolutely hate her story and the writing behind it. It almost, ALMOST, ruins the show for me to be honest. She's literally one of the worst written characters I've ever seen. How is a show that's written so well, mess up this one character so bad?
The only other flaw, which is more annoying than anything else, is the logic behind some of the characters. For example, these are extremely intelligent people, yet sometimes they go off on their own and you're like, why are they alone? Or, why are they bickering in a time like this? Little things like this are more annoying, but the show has to have drama I guess. The Dr. Smith storyline though, that's unforgivably awful.
Manifest (2018)
Each season needs it's own review.
Overall this series is great. Seasons 1 and 2 are good. I can deal with certain plot holes and suspend belief to a certain point. Season 3 comes around and the writing is just way more inconsistent and choppy than the first 2. A couple things I don't understand (as far as the main protagonist Ben is concerned) is how someone who is hated doesn't have a security system or a concealed carry pistol. Like, I know it's Hollywood and they probably think only cops should have guns, but come on. The show has to make sense to the average viewer (within reason of course).
Season 3 is kinda bad actually. They treat the viewer as more of an idiot, explain fewer things, the characters just act oddly. Let's hope the writer gets their act together and can end this on a positive note.
Painting with John (2021)
Garbage
This series has nothing to do with painting. I don't know who this guy is, but apparently he has fans. I guess good for them? It's not about painting, it's not inspiring, it's not well written, or anything. I don't get the high ratings. Even if I were a fan, this is just him rambling on about things that happened in his life sometimes. Am I supposed to watch it on mushrooms or something? Should've been a podcast or something thrown on YouTube.
Wish Dragon (2021)
Good, but could've been better.
I have no idea why people are comparing this to Aladdin. I feel that's a pretty simple minded way of going into it. I didn't care for the animation style personally, but it's fine. My problem is that the way the story was told during the first half was a little drug out and boring. It's a really good movie, just slow at times and drawn out.
Locke & Key (2020)
I came back to lower my rating.
It starts off ok. Then declines. Then, I'm my opinion, goes into a full on nose dive with episode 10 being a glorious disaster. Then, as others have said, they very much went CW on it. Maybe if I hadn't read the graphic novels I could've rated it higher, but even still I don't think I'd watch season 2 knowing that it was teenage drama with a dose of story sprinkled in. I was like, ok, this is a 7. Then a 4. Now it's just not recommendable at all.
