Harry Brown (2009)
Watch this if you like to see chavs getting theirs.
This films selling point is to tap into how a lot of the general public feel about the justice system today. It seems like hoodies and chavs can run riot without any repercussions and should anyone dare to fight back it is more likely that they themselves, the hard working, tax paying family man, ends up being prosecuted. I admit this was my sole motivation for watching the film.
Although I did feel a sense of "Good, serves em right" as Harry dishes out his form of justice that was the only thing that I liked about it. The plot was very contrived with people coming to quick conclusions and changes of heart without much reason and the film suffered from poor pacing where some atmospheric scenes seemed added just to pad out the running time (I had to skip forward some of these).
The script was predictable and the characters were too far overdone e.g. the youngsters appear to belong to a form of super chav race created from centuries of inbreeding and there's the gun selling, crop growing heroin junkie trying to be Gary Oldman, he's the pick of the bunch. Harry's transformation from mild mannered chess player to psychopath was far too swift also.
Probably my biggest disappointment was that here was a film about working class Londoners and Danny Dyer was nowhere to be seen, I kept thinking that he would surely turn up sooner or later but he didn't. Shame.
As the summary says watch this if you like to see chavs getting what's coming to them, that aspect of the film was pretty satisfying.
Veteranos (1998)
Hilarious
A tale telling the life of a respected Mexican American hood and his crew as they try are picked off one by one by a white gang. This has to be the most unintentionally funniest film I've ever seen and I would recommend this film because of it.
From the wooden acting (Keanu Reeves would be proud) to the moments where the actors are trying to stop themselves from laughing and the awkward silences in some scenes it almost seems like a parody in the mould of TV series 'the office' the fact that this is supposed to be a serious movie makes it a riot.
Standout moments include; a blowjob scene with some ludicrous slurping sounds and what sounds like a fart as a finale. A gangland hit where the pursuers in their car slam on the brakes as one quickly gets out he unitentionaly falls over to the sounds of background laughter. Guns being shot as though the person was trying to flick a bogey off the end of the barrel. A gripping shootout takes place at the end where after one of the homies is shot and is dying with his last breath he manages to whisper "family for life". There is actually an unforeseen twist at the end which rounded off the movie well (twist may be obvious to some viewers but I was too busy laughing to notice).
Rent this film it is strangely satisfying and I can definitely see myself giving it another viewing.
