Weak female lead..
18 August 2015
The plot was a little too far-fetched and the sexism ruined the film for me. The way the female detective was treated in this film was pretty vile. You can tell it was written and directed by men. The story had promise, but once it unfolded it was a little too unbelievable. I wanted to see the female at some point take charge and not sit back and allow herself to be physically and mentally abused by her male counterparts. It was obvious that she was more intelligent than the guys around her, yet she continued to allow them to ridicule her and treat her poorly. Perhaps this film needs to be remade with a strong female lead.

Two extraordinary actors
1 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I had the opportunity to see a special screening of American Gangster, staring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. The movie was outstanding! It is one of the best of 2007. Both Denzel and Russell's acting is flawless! It was such a joy to watch these two extraordinary actors go toe to toe in this intense, fast paced film. I enjoyed the pace of the film as well as the development of the main characters. There were two scenes in particular that didn't contain any dialogue that really stood out to me. One is when Frank Lucas ( Denzel's character) is at the reception after the funeral of his mentor and he's watching all the people around him. As a viewer you're wondering what's going through his mind, while he's observing everyone.

I think he was picking out the people who he could trust and the people who were really sincere in expressing their grief. The other scene is when Russell's character( Richie Roberts) is sitting in the court room, and he's staring at his wife. He soon realizes what he has to do. It was simply brilliant! I hope both of these two great actors will get nominations for their outstanding performances!

Great movie! well written and well acted!
25 February 2007
I wasn't born during that time period, so this was a history lesson for me. The movie was intense, heartbreaking, and though provoking. It showed what real presidential leadership is, something that we're lacking today. Kennedy was a very hands on President, he just didn't take the word of others, he wanted to find out for himself, which is the total opposite of what we have in our president today.

Every life was sacred to him, that's why he did everything within his power to avoid going to war. People who complain about the current president should take comfort in the fact that he wasn't president during the Cuban Missile crisis. Great movie! well written and well acted!

Very sweet, touching movie
16 September 2006
I watched with my eight-year-old and she really enjoyed it! She said it was one of her favorite movies. It was her first time watching a movie with subtitles, but she was able to keep up with it.

I really think this is one of the best family movies I've seen in a long time. The bond between the brother and sister was simply beautiful! The movie also gave us a peek inside of the life of an Iranian family.

The brother was selfless and his father was a very moral man. I wish the ending would have been a little more tight, but other than that I was pleased with the movie.

Focus (I) (2001)

The movie is very well written and well acted.

I'm a huge fan of legendary director Elia Kazan . His movies often deal with people trying to overcome their weaknesses. Be it obsessive love in 'Splendor In the Grass, poverty in "A tree Grows in Brooklyn" or racism in "Gentlemen's Agreement." While looking for other movies made by Kazan, I stumbled across a movie that was based on a novel by Arthur Miller. The movie called "Focus" stars William H.Macy (who happens to be one of my favorite actors) and Laura Dern. It deals with anti-Semitism in a very realistic way.

Macy's character seems to go along with the bigots in his neighborhood and on his job, until it affects him personally. That's the key here... the reason he acted wasn't because he knew it was wrong and he wanted to take a stand, he acted because he was now considered an outsider, and he began to experience the same looks, the same remarks, and the same brutally that Mr. Finklestein (David Pamyers)experienced .

The movie is very well written and well acted. Meat Loaf does a awesome job of playing a dirt bag! Both Macy and Dern's performances are outstanding! It's easier in life to go along with, instead of going against. Sometimes in order for people to take a stand things have to impact their lives, or the lives of their loved ones...Only then will some find their moral compass.

Will give you goosebumps!
9 September 2006
Natalie Portman, gave one of the best performances of her career! This movie is very thought provoking and entertaining. The way the government manipulated the public is very similar to what we're facing today.

The similarities between our current government and this fictitious government will give you goosebumps. The citizens are being controlled by fear and intimidation.

The government uses the media as a tool to spread their propaganda. The message is the public must obtain as much information as possible, and don't take the governments word for everything. Question everything!

Very unlikable people in a very unlikable movie!
4 September 2006
The previews for "The Family Stone" made me believe that it was going to be like "Meet The Parents." I found all of the characters accept for Luke Wilson and Sarah Jessica Parker, to be unbearable!

Sarah does a good job of playing the uptight business woman, it seems to me that her being brutally honest was a bit too much for this whacked out, vulgar family.

I thought this movie didn't know if it wanted to be a drama or a comedy, therefore it was neither. I can't tell you how much I detest this family and their smugness! If you're in a mood for a family comedy, rent "Meet the Parents" or "Meet the Fockers."

Millions (2004)

"Millions" is a rare gem!
13 March 2006
Millions is one of those rare gems that stays with you long after the movie is over. This movie touched my heart and moved my soul! It was about hope and trying to move forward in life while dealing with loss. The cast was outstanding! I can't believe that this was Alexander Nathan Etel first movie, he was superb. I would recommend this movie for ages ten and up, I don't think younger children will latch onto the message.

Millions will open your heart to so many possibilities that life has to offer. It s one of those movies that will make you laugh, cry and more importantly think.

Tom Cruise proved that he can do anything!
25 December 2004
Tom Cruise proved that he can do anything! He can play a bad guy just as well as he can play a good guy. Tom has now joined Gene Hackman, and Denzel Washington into convincingly crossing over to the dark-side. It would be nice to see him take on more roles where he's not the squeaky clean guy.

I think other than Born On The Fourth of July, this is Tom at his best. There were moments in the film, when he didn't speak a word, but his facial expressions said it all. The scene in the Jazz club was one of the most intense moments in the film.

Jamie Foxx has come along way since "In Living Colour." Foxx was excellent. This by far was one of the best movies of 2004

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

This was one of my favorite movies of 2004.
16 December 2004
This was one of my favorite movies of 2004. Tobey Maguire's performance was flawless. He seems very vulnerable and it comes across very sincere on screen, it makes you just want to protect him. Even in the movie, the passengers on the train were willing to risk their lives to protect him. You could just feel the turmoil that he felt when he realized that he couldn't have a life with Mary Jane.

Kirsten & Tobey have amazing chemistry, it was a pleasure to watch them interact. I'm not one for action movies, but I really liked this movie, I liked the fact that the love story was a major part of the film. Alfred Molina was great as the villain (Doc Ock/Dr. Otto Octavius)

People that like love stories will like this and people that like action adventure movies will also like this. I give this movie a 10. I look forward to Spider-Man 3.

Huge disappointment
15 December 2004
I saw the previews for this movie and I couldn't wait to see it, unfortunately it was a huge disappointment.I understand that the directors wanted to do an up-to-date movie, however the use of profanity was overkill. It seems that every other word out of Marlon Wayans mouth was a four letter word.

I also thought the movie promoted stereotypes, especially when it came to Marlon's character. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful and I thought the gospel music definitely help set the tone of the movie. Tom Hanks and Irma P. Hall's performances were outstanding, yet it wasn't enough to cover the flaws in this movie.

Man on Fire (2004)

This movie had action and suspense, it was very entertaining.
12 December 2004
I thought his movie stared off slowly, but when it took off...It really took off. Denzel has to be one of the best actors working today. In the beginning his appearance and demeanor was that of a lost, broken man. As the bond grew between his character and Dakota Fanning's character he began to come to terms with his past deeds. Denzel did a good job of giving us a peek inside the mind of a remorseful assassin .

Again Denzel's performance was superb! I was also very impressed with Dakota Fanning's performance. She reminds me of a young Jodie Foster. Miss Fanning definitely has a very bright future in films. This movie had action and suspense, I thought it was very entertaining.

Love Actually (2003)

Very good movie
4 December 2004
I really liked this movie. It showed relationships in a very realistic way. I liked all of the performances, Grant is at his best in romantic comedies. Emma Thompson was excellent as the married woman that came to realize that things weren't what she thought they were in her marriage. She gave a very quiet heart wrenching performance, It wasn't over the top. When she went into her bedroom and looked at the photo's of her family, it showed us the history of this couple, and how it seems that the husband lost himself in his work, while she lost herself in her children.

This is like the old cliché, it will make you laugh and make you cry. Sam played by Thomas Sangster was one of the sweetest characters. I also like the scenes in the airport. This movie is all about the power of love, and how one cannot control whom they're going to fall in love with.

This was a very powerful film!
2 December 2004
This was a very powerful film! The performances were outstanding! I liked the way the cameras were used to pull away at certain moments, and also give us a close up view of the characters. I can't say enough about the performances, Spencer was superb, Lancaster's performance kept me on the edge of my seat and Maximilian Schell sent chills up my spine. This is a film everyone should see, because it shed some light inside the twisted minds of the Nazis.

The film is very relevant to the situation that America is currently in with the war in Iraq. We went to war because we thought that Saddam had WMD's, as Lancaster said in the movie, "we didn't know, because we didn't want to know." Some people in the Bush administration knew that Saddam didn't have WMD's and they stood by in silence, because they thought they were doing this for the "good of the country." Sounds familiar huh?
