El páramo (2021)
Must watch!
I have seen fair share of horror films and it's not seldom that a film can make me finch. But this one did. Atmospherically rich, brilliant soundtrack and acting. The cinematography is beautiful. And the premise is engaging. Loved it. Fans of horror/mystery give a watch. Even if you don't like scary movies this should not be missed. This is a special film.
Black Widow (2021)
A filler film
Like a filler episode in the TV series this is a filler film from Marvel. It started with a bang but ended like a typical genre film. So many clichéd scenes and the PC Hollywood culture was the final nail in the coffin. All badass roles are of women, Taskmaster was my favourite part of this film but they even had to cast a female in that role. The villain (poorly characterised) is a man, and the joker dad, The Red Guardian is a man.
Lazy writing, not what you expect from a Marvel film.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Way better than what I was expecting
First of all, the design of Whitespikes is among the best I have ever seen in film. The way they move, attack and their presence in a scene carries weight and is intimidating.
Near the climax the She (Queen) bites her limb off to prevent further infection and the way she does it tells that how every species strives for survival and to what length some can go. Truly jaw dropping.
The music also is not generic or typical and it moved me throughout the film. Lorne Balfe should get nominated for an Oscar here.
The performances were good if not excellent and Sam Richardson as Charlie is funny. He is the source of humour in this film (that stairs scene when they first encounter the beasts).
Action, visual effects are of high quality though in some scenes one can notice the use of virtual (green screen) if one looks for it.
The story and the plot is obviously not original and the time travel concept is a genre of its own.
The thing that I found to be inconsistent is the ending. Dan and his father two people are able to deal with the Queen alone while earlier in the film, with harpoons they had trouble not to mention much more soldiers too. Yes, I know they had the toxin but she bites that limb off like it was a finger nail. Also, and this is just a personal preference but the ending is comforting. And I was actually anticipating some kind of background for the aliens like where they came from or how they crashed (or who weaponised them). Maybe a prequel film about this?!
Like maybe they were the ones who caused the aliens to break out and attack them in the future or something. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure many people will love the ending as it is.
So, in conclusion a solid package filled with some awe inspiring moments and aliens that will haunt you for days to come :)
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes (1965)
Jolly good time!
A really good film from the 1960s that has funny scenes and characters that perfectly fit the stereotype associated with their nation. My favourite were Gov Percy (Terry Thomas) and the German Colonel (forgot his name). Thomas could have been used more. His mere presence in the scene guarantees a laugh. The theme song is catchy too.
The thing that could have been done away with is the love triangle which hampers the overall structure. It's not funny and it just doesn't fit into the film.
Overall a jolly good time (mostly).
Spy (2015)
Jason Statham makes this film watchable
This film is funny only when Rick Ford appears before and after that it is boring and not funny.
Wrath of Man (2021)
Good but could have been better
I was looking forward to this film the day I watched the trailer. I love Statham's action style and his comedic abilities. This film is different as in it has very grim tone to it. It's slow in parts and might be boring at this times.
The opening is strong and music sets up the events to follow. The second half is not that spotless. If you go into this movie hoping to see a blockbuster action film, it's not that. It's smaller in scale. If you are ok with that, then you will have a good time overall.
A fun watch, but not the best of Guy Ritchie or Statham.
9. april (2015)
Transports you to Denmark 1940.
This is a great little film about a platoon which was ill equipped, ill informed and heavily outnumbered. Their few hours of life and a futile yet brave attempt to defend their country to the best of their abilities.
The film transports you to that day and you feel like a witness standing there observing everything. This film is small in scale but that's a good thing. It lets us fully immerse ourselves in this story which many of us were oblivious to.
The Enforcer (1976)
6.5
Along the similar lines as the previous two films which makes this film unoriginal.
It still has the capacity to keep you entertained but do not expect anything new or surprising.
Duel (1971)
Waste of time
What did I just watch? The first 30 40 minutes are good but they do not build up to anything great. It's more of the same again and again. Skipped through the last 30 minutes. A waste of time.
Stalingrad (1993)
An important film
A WW2 film from the German - Russian perspective. This sets it apart from other films mainly those from the US and the UK. An important chapter of Eastern Front is showcased here. There are no heroes but only men fighting to survive.
Also, the oppening theme which plays throughout the film is epic.
Contratiempo (2016)
Not the best mystery film but not the worst either
For someone who has seen a lot of mystery films and is a big fan of Hitchcock, this film failed to shock to me in it's finale. It tries too hard to sustain the suspense, which lowers the attention and the engagement of the viewer. The rapid changing of facts or stories does not help either. That being said it's still a pretty watchable film and if someone is new to this genre then they might enjoy it more than I did.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
7.5 for the Ultimate Edition
The BvS: Ultimate Edition is a must watch film which sets up the Snyder Cut well.
The film is a thrilling ride with many rememberable moments.
The story is a bit convoluted and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex is not suitable.
Action, like any other Snyder film makes up for the flaws.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
A work of passion
ZSJL is four hours of Superhero fun. It is the best in the the Trilogy (MoS, BvS Ultimate Ed. and this).
I just felt that the film lacked something. Maybe it's the finale. Darkseid being the final boss could have been epic. Also, the epilogue could have been excluded.
There's not much else to add. The film is decent. The pacing is good. All the members of the League feel important.
I look forward to where this series go next.
The Intern (2015)
*8.5
A beautiful, feel-good film. I had a smile on my face throughout. Deniro, as usual, is really likable and Hathway was a treat to watch. Having a bad day? Watch it now! After all, we all are sensitive, big ball of mush.
