Truands (2007)
Paris Let-down
If you rent this movie, bring a long a peg for your nose, as this is an utter stinker. The main drive of a good gangster film, is the characterisation, the motives behind the violence. This has none of that, all it has is a grumpy Alan Sugar a-like moping round shouting and swearing. You don't care about him or any of the other characters at all, people drift in and out of the story without any sort of motivation. Its flat and dull, even the half decent car-park shoot out is spoiled with fake cgi blood. I will say one thing though, the torture scene with the drill to the knee, is pretty cool, but doesn't go any further than in the trailer. In fact, just watch the trailer, its much better than the movie itself. Proper wafty. If you want to see an intelligent French gangster film, with pathos and a sense of realism get 'The beat that my heart skipped'.
Creep (2004)
Oh dear.
Another lacklustre British horror. Hardly any gore for a gore movie, huge plot holes and pretty duff acting. I really really wanted to like this movie but was just left cringing. I have to admit, as someone else has said, it does have one of the best 'jump scares' ever, but other times the direction just seems to be lazy. SPOILER** For example why is Vas Blackwoods character lingering soooo long in front of the empty doorway of the Creeps lair after he smashes the windows, would it be waiting for him in the darkness? I think so. Audiences are far too savvy to be scared by this sort of jump scare nowadays. SPOILER END** The tense, spooky beginning is undermined by the very poor third reel, and a monster that isn't scary. Oh big shout out to 'The insects' for ripping off/homage to the soundtrack of 'Suspiria' If we are to support British film in the UK, why are we offered such tat? I hate ragging on a low budget horror like this, I'm amazed this project even got off the ground. The Producer has to bee aplauded for keeping uk horror alive, but why not make something edgy and different? Go see 'The Descent', by no means perfect but a much better example of UK talent. Oh, and the director must have seen RAW MEAT too. Same sort of idea, done better, where you do genuinely empathise with the 'monster'. Check that movie out on US import. Done a year before Texas Chainsaw (which also rips it off). And featuring 'Richard' from 'Keeping up Appearances'. Hopefully 'Slither' from the USA will give us a fun, edgy gore flick this year.
Haute tension (2003)
I feel betrayed!
I so wanted to love this movie, the effects, the camera work, the acting is all superb. It has the best tense moments since 'mute witness' or 'the thing'. I really really was enjoying this movie (like most other reviews) up until the 'twist'. Why the hell the director decided on this stupid, pointless, banal unoriginal ending is beyond me. This film would have been an absolute classic, with numerous reference points to other movies, classic and modern, had it not been for the ending. Everyone should see it, purely for the chest of drawers to head scene ('wallop have some of that'). This should have been 10/10 for the pure unashamed gall of the movie but, because it fizzles away to a dssapointing cliché, only 6/10 I'm afraid.
Session 9 (2001)
Avoid!!!
I wish I had more hands, because I'd give this film four thumbs down!!!I rented this movie a while ago at uni, from the recommendation of my housemate ( you know the type, likes listening to korn and has the buffy box sets) and just remember thinking no no no, all wrong. Its such a pointless film, the payoff at the end is boring and predictable, I don't know why it has such good IMDb reviews. The film is like someone has watched a marilyn manson or nine inch nails video and tried to stretch it out into a full length movie It looks cheap and nasty, and I can't be sure but I think it went straight to video. If you want a scare or just some degree of originality, rent a jap horror, RINGU, JU-ON, DARK WATER. Or if your after real psychological terror combined with stunning deep focus photography try the original HAUNTING. Apologies to all those out there that actually enjoyed this turkey.
