Dune: Part Two (2024)
Awesome
Awesome in the truest sense of the word. A wonderful adaption with some true darkness at its heart. Visually stunning with scenes that are at times achingly beautiful. Sometimes a film comes along that restores your faith in the medium, and for me this is it, soaring as it does high above recent blockbuster fair. Equally adept in handling massive set pieces as it is in showing genuine human interactions in more intimate settings. A director at the top of his game, ably assisted by a cinematographer who fully deserves every one of the plaudits he is receiving. Not a single poor performance from any of the cast, with the only whiff of a misstep being the rather strange choice for the emperor, however this is a minor, and very subjective, gripe.
If there is a better slice of cinema served this year, we will have been very lucky indeed.
Argylle (2024)
Dreadful...except for Sam Rockwell
Kernel of an interesting idea let down by terrible script, poor performances, lack of identity (film seems uncertain as to whether it wishes to be a romp or a spoof, and manages neither), flat comedy and the worst CGI I have seen in a cinema for an age. Sam Rockwell merits the stars the film receives on his own as he is engaging and fun while onscreen as always. One wonders what the array of big stars and normally reliable actors saw in the script. How Ms Lovitt from Collider viewed this as an 8/10 film is beyond me. Even accounting for taste I'm baffled that anyone could make an argument that the film deserves that score, let alone a professional critic. One to avoid.
