Marvin ou la belle éducation (2017)
A film everyone can relate to, at least on some level
Reinventing Marvin is a film I think everyone can relate to, at least on some level. When looking at the life of the main character and his journey (both figurative and literal), it is hard not to see aspects of our own lives--or at least that was the case for me. But then, isn't that the purpose of all films? To make us, the viewer, reflect on our own lives and therefore sympathize with the main characters? In that sense, the film is nothing special or unusual, but give the trailer a watch and if it looks like something you'd be into, give the film a try, you might get something out of it!
Park (2016)
Surprisingly good!
I was actually pretty surprised I liked this film as much as I did. I turned it on not planning on finishing it, as I often do when browsing new movies to stream, but was captivated enough to sit through all 100 minutes. Other reviewers have complained that the film is depressing and lacking in plot, both of which are true... it is not a feel-good movie and does not follow the traditional structure with plot points, etc,,, rather, it introduces us to some interesting characters, their problems, and their relationships with one another. Problems arise and are dealt with, but in ways that often create more problems, and in the end nothing is really solved, as is such in life. In that way it is a true "slice-of-life" film.
Withdrawn (2017)
Understated Indie Gem
This film was recommended to me by my brother a few years ago, and we have similar tastes in movies, so I gave it a shot, but turned it off after only a few minutes as I just couldn't get into it. I found myself giving it another chance a few nights ago when I couldn't sleep so pulled this up on Netflix to fall asleep to, but I watched the whole thing... twice! Many will find this movie boring, but that's what is good about it! The film draws the viewer into the day to day monotony of our hero--err, antihero--and gives you an almost first person glimpse into the life of this awkward deadbeat Canadian slacker. True, the plot meanders, the acting is a bit sub par at times (particularly from our lead actor), it doesn't follow the traditional structure and therefore hard to predict, and our lead character has no redeeming qualities to speak of and therefore is difficult to sympathize with, but the film still succeeds despite all of these seemingly shortcomings... you don't sympathize with the guy because you're not meant to! Besides story, the sparse cinematography and interesting shot compositions, consisting of mostly static shots and long takes, were a high point that showcased the filmmakers' skill working with an ultra low budget, and was reminiscent of early Jim Jarmusch. The film is also very short, so even if you're one of those who hate it, you'll only have wasted about 70 minutes.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
That Will Hunting, he's quite a character!
All I can say is oh my God, I loved this movie. Matt Damon is so hot in this movie, it's not even funny! I'm serious! I wasn't even paying attention to the story, I was so focused on Matt Damon and his hot bod! And I'm a guy and I'm not even gay, so that says something right there. The girls and gays must go crazy over him. I know I would! It almost makes me wish I was gay! To tell you the truth, if Matt Damon came up to me right now and told me he wanted to have sex with me, I don't know if I would be able to turn him down. And how about that Ben Affleck! I bet he wanted the title role and him and Matt were arguing over it but Mr Van Sant said no on account of he's nowhere near as hot at Matt. Oh well, enough of my babbling. I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did!
Over the Edge (1979)
These are my kind of kids . . . these must be the bad kids
New Granada is a friendly suburban community with spacious living facilities, nice folks...and misunderstood youths? I don't get it. Are we really supposed to feel sorry for these kids? Should we let them just run rampant in the streets? They are obviously some very bad kids who deserve what they had coming to them. I don't care how bored you are, you don't go waving a gun around in front of a cop or else you get shot. And how was he supposed to know the thing was loaded anyway? They make the cop out to be the villain and the "misguided youths" the heroes. The only good part of the movie was Matt Dillon, whom you may know from Crash(2004), or for his poignant portrayal of Dallas Winston in The Outsiders(1983).
The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case (1930)
If you love Laurel and Hardy, you'll like this!
If you love Laurel and Hardy, you'll like this! Not only is it witty, but clever as well. By this I mean to say the two silly boys show their cleverness in getting themselves out of some very witty situations. How did this pudgy-faced minstrel and his awkward looking partner ever become so popular anyway? Oh well, no matter. We shall continue to enjoy their outrageously hilarious short subjects for many more years to come. Don't miss this remarkable true story about two vagrant bums who dream up a scheme to murder their rich uncle Alfred in order to collect the insurance money. All this and more. It's an excellent film, and everyone ought to see it.
Singapore Sue (1932)
Not a great motion picture...
Singapore Sue, not a great motion picture, but entertaining at times. Cary Grant makes his screen debut costarring next to the beloved Anna Chang in this clever comedy short about an American sailor boy who falls deeply in love with a Chinese dancing girl, Sue. The young Grant's face is barely recognizable behind that thick coating of makeup they had plastered all over it. But really folks, Casey Robinson is such an excellent director, it's surprising we don't see more of his work today. If I had to describe it in words I would only need one: a superb masterpiece. Come see this unforgettable classic feature and hear Singapore sing. I give it five stars, that's five out of ten. The rest is not worth commenting on.
Twin Husbands (1946)
What explains our enduring obsession with Mr. Errol?
Twin Husbands, being my first real Errol experience, literally drove me to a point of uncontrolled laughter. But seriously, what explains our enduring obsession with Mr. Errol? I'm sure not even Leon himself knows that one. But that's okay--we shall continue to enjoy his outrageously hilarious short subjects for many more years to come. Don't miss this extraordinary Hal Yates directorial, featuring Mr. Leon Errol as dual roles for the first time ever. I recommend this one to anyone with a sense of humor. It is humorous and intelligent both at the same time. By this I mean that Leon Errol, also playing his twin brother Alfred, shows his intelligence in getting himself out of humorous situations. But Hal Yates is such an amazing director, it's no wonder his name ever became the part of common speech we so often hear among young people today. I give it five stars, and I'm sure you will too. Enjoy!
