Evolution Earth (2023)
Watching the changing lives of animals on a changing planet
This show is from the perspective of how animals around the globe, not in areas of comfortable climate, are adapting and changing to match/meet the challenges being presented to them.
It's very informative, very well done, and sometimes eye-opening.
The latest episode pointed out the southern Albatros is flying 15% faster than ever due to the winds they fly around the globe to find food are blowing 15% faster, which is changing the planet where the winds are felt.
Also in the episode were the reindeer of the north helping to keep CC at bay due to eating young trees, as the expansion of trees is causing additional warmth, thus illustrating the conflict between expansion and the wild.
Warrior Nun (2020)
Yes, She's a brat, but it gets better. Worth the watch IMHO
Warning -- may be spoilers
Bratty teenager is killed. Also the head of a team of warrior nuns. The element which makes them work -- immortal power -- transfers to the brat and revives her. She is less than grateful and quite a bit clueless, all of which thankfully slowly wears down as the series progresses.
Despite this, I liked the show, and was hooked in the first episode. I am so tired of teen angst as portrayed on the CW and FOX, and was a bit apprehensive, but the overall energy and novelty won me enough to see all episodes in one sitting.
In general I felt it was well-written and well-acted and the plot was full of enough tension to keep one watching into the next episode. The angst remained subdued -- tho the heroine is not a perfect person, and could have benefited from being a lot more clued into the power she could wield, if she ever got it together.
I hope to see her more fully embrace the gift in the second season which I am completely looking forward to. Not quite as much as The Witcher, but close.
Journeyman (2007)
Intelligent Show-- fun to watch
I think this is a great show. And it comes into this without T&A, guns, or over-hyped out-of-place excitement. Journeyman is a prime example of a creative show that builds upon ideas and concepts that were established by shows before it. Tho similar to other time travel shows like Quantum Leap, what sets this series apart is that it actually takes a serious look at how being tossed around in time would effect a person's life and relationships. It is a show that feels polished, and holds a unique style to it. The concept of time travel is realistically portrayed, while the periods in time are very accurately depicted (including many nostalgic details). Everything just fits and the acting is superb. Every week this show manages to captivate me, and I really want it to stick around. Marriage is hard, especially when the totally unexpected enters into the mix. The real center of this show isn't time travel, but relationships. Each one of Dan's assignments has dealt with the central theme of broken relationships and how they affect the bigger picture; which is exactly the situation that Dan is dealing with in his own life. This show truly stands out. I can only hope that NBC knows what it has and decides to invest in it for several more seasons. As someone else here in the comments said, I think it's a classic already. But, then, what would I know-- I'm just a viewer who likes intelligent shows featuring intelligent characters trying to make do in unexpected situations.
Close to Home (2005)
Needed better writers, not a cast change
I enjoyed watching this show as I've enjoyed Jennifer Finnigan in other things she's done, especially those few appearances on another fave, Dead Zone, but was not happy with the cast change and the disappearance of Christian Kane as Jack Chase and the introduction of David James Elliott (of JAG fame) as the new character, ADA Jimmy Conlon. It changed the whole flavor and atmosphere of the show, and I must admit, I watched it less the second season than I did the first. It's CBS's loss.
I hope Jennifer gets a show which is written well enough for her to show what she can do, and does many more guest appearances on Dead Zone, that is, if USA ever figures out how to market a hit show.
And I hope David James Elliott gets his own show, with him as the lead, not added to someone else's show as an attempt to make up for lame plots.
The Dead Zone (2002)
yes/no buttons no working
I wanted to second the opinion expressed by Dr_Hieronymus from Orlando, FL, but my buttons weren't working. So, I guess I'll just do it here:
--------
"In a word of cardboard characters and poor writing, The Dead Zone is a joy to watch. I have enjoyed every episode and some episodes have been excellent.
The only tragedy with this series is not with the series itself but with the way USA handles the scheduling and marketing. Most of the time I don't know when the season is going to begin or when the new episodes will air. Scheduling is erratic and promotion is often non-existent. Someone in the USA main office must not want this show to succeed. Frankly, it's an amazing testament to the show's appeal that it still is in production despite this utter mismanagement.
USA, please recognize the gem you have in both Monk and The Dead Zone and, at the very least, air them on a regular schedule on which we can rely."
--------
As I said, I agree. USA, please get reliable with your good shows.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Hollow characters no-one cares about
I took my mom to see this movie, based on the reviews and the ensemble cast, and she agreed with me completely: If either one of us had been in the theatre alone, we would have walked out. The only thing keeping us in our seats was each other being there. The personalities on screen were hollow and vacuous, selfish and myopic and not one was sympathetic or alluring enough to care about, nor were their actions those to get behind. I much prefer to be entertained for my dollar. If I'm going to be frustrated by what I see on screen, I want it to be by people/characters I care about, or at least goals I care about, or commentary I care about. This movie had none of these, and I still don't understand the enthusiasm of so many movie critics, including some whose judgment I normally respect and agree with.
Mystic River (2003)
Evil and its consequences, well-acted
This is a movie with a good cast, doing a good job of telling a story of evil acts done on people and the cascading evil which spills therefrom. If seeing people caught in a web of cascading evil with no redemption is your cup of tea, then this is for....As my grandmother once remarked, "...a dreadful story, well-acted..." ...brilliant actors, clever cinematography, a melodramatic score and an iconic director, and voilà - suspension of disbelief - of good sense - of morality itself -- NOT!! Rather, a bleak, depressing story, filled w/inconsistent messages, brilliant acting notwithstanding -- as one other reviewer mentioned -- "how can a movie that validates violence, murder, selfishness, lack of responsibility and consequences, be given any awards of any kind?" Not to mention moral myopia and totally inconsistent morality where a character promises one thing and seemingly forgets it later...
