This is a very tough series to watch. Richard Gadd makes an incredible acting effort. Imagine if you had gone through all these traumas and then relived all that to film a series. Honestly, you don't know whether Richard Gadd is acting or reliving the experience during the making of this show. Probably both. Anyway, the acting was phenomenal, by both Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning.
This series is about how complicated human behavior and emotions can be, for example self-hatred, obsession and empathy. It wasn't just Martha who did wrong. Donny also made the mistake of sending mixed signals to Martha to lead her on. It is a very tragic and dark story. Many times I felt frustrated with the decisions that Donny made. After episode 4, you understand more why Donny is the way he is and the problems he has with sexuality and his insecurities in general. He doesn't feel worthy as a comedian, because of how he got there. This series is about so much more than just a case of extreme stalking. It's a very fascinating biopic that I didn't expect at all.
The series is perfect in length. Just seven episodes that are roughly 30 minutes long. The filmmaking, writing and pacing is really good. The best thing about the series was that I didn't see anything coming. Every twist, every turn, I never saw what was coming next. I was invested all the way through, from start to finish.
After all this, I hope they both get therapy and get help with their problems.
