A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon (2001)
Illuminiating
Some people will believe anything. If you want to believe that a dozen or so people went to the moon, apparently no one can disabuse you of that notion. Sure, this wasn't a multi-million dollar epic full of special effects, but it does present a quite credible case that the public has been hoodwinked into believing something that clearly could not have happened. Certainly not the first time. Too bad no Asians in it, though. I think that if you make a point by point list of the issues that are presented, and then do a basic search on the web, you will find there is considerable disagreement to this very day, and that not every fact is a true fact. The aspersions as to Van Allen's Belt causing harm to delicate electronics, brain tissue and trouser suspension is well noted in the literature, and there have even been probes that became defunct because of it. And I don't buy for one minute the lack of photos of stars or even the Earth from the moon.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
Oh, Boy. Are you in for a treat !
What a stinker this one is. I've had a hard time with a few movies that just didn't live up the ad campaign, and it's always a tipoff that when a studio spends as much on ads as it spent on the production there are serious problems. This is just such a wet turd that I do not know where to start. Leaving aside the fact that there are no Asians (which I will give Bill Murray a pass on this time because he had so darn many in Lost in Translation) here they are trying to parody Jacques Cousteau and they can't even make it funny. Even Spongebob does a better job. At least the cartoon fish were well done. Perhaps if they just farmed out the whole thing, and had the characters drawn, it would have been worth watching. On TV. As a rerun. But the thing sure isn't worth paying to see. If you do get trapped in, just go theater hop and see something else - either instead or in addition to - to make it almost worth the pain.
Saw (2004)
Awful, just awful
It never ceases to amaze me how low a standard films marketed to young teens can stoop to. This chunk of crap is a prime example. If you've seen the trailer - or even the commercials - then you have essentially seen the whole movie so I won't bore you with the slimy details. Let's just say that there is nothing - nothing that will shock or amaze you except the cheap tricks the film maker resorts to in trying to give worthless material time on screen. If it hadn't been such a joke I would have walked out. But as it was, it was more fun yelling back at the screen. That at least provided some release. And why they couldn't include at least one Asian actor is another question. This 'film' is a zero.
Comedy Central Presents: Dat Phan (2004)
Way, way funny
At first, I was wondering what this was all about. I mean a special has to last a lot longer than the few minutes they gave on the show, and the audience would be there for the entire time, so they would be hearing the material and all that. well, it's a lot harder to just tell the same five routines for more than 8 minutes, and even with music and an introduction, at least three times as much funny joke needs to be stretched out. Thank goodness for the notebook. After opening with the killer material from the Last Comic Standing, the notebook had different gags and quips that really brought the house down. I know the audience was held like puddy in my hands because they were too enraptured to talk or do anything other than sit there mouth open. It was a great show, and if you didn't see it, try to find it on tape on on the internet. It is something you will want to see time and time again.
