Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)
Bad movie.
The movie is bad. I just cannot help giving it a 10 after I learn the story behind.
Liu lang di qiu (2019)
Over the past 10 years, I only went to theater for Star Wars and Wandering Earth
I love movies, but I consider most of them are not worth of going to the theater.
The trailer bought me to the theater for several reasons.
"What will happen if the Sun disappear?" "How human beings survive if the Sun explodes?" There are good fictions and serious science behind the two questions, but there is never a movie talking about it.
Making a good sci-fi, you need good science behind it. There are a lot of physics Q&A for small details in this movie. "Why not just build rocket ships and take human beings to another planet?" "Why atmosphere pressure has anything to do with lift force for an aircraft?" When I was a kid, I used to think all sci-fi movies should make scientific sense. I realized how precious it is a sci-fi movie choose to stick to scientific accurate. Even when investor withdrew the money because they think is too hard-core and will have no market.
The story, is really about how people choose to help each other and bond with each other and how people choose to sacrifice. The only spoiler I will tell you is:
Beijing No.3 Transportation Division reminds you.
Routes are countless.
Safety is foremost.
Unregulated driving.
Loved ones end up in tears.
And prepare to cry for the story.
Searching (2018)
Many people in the Bay Area can relate
For high school students in Bay Area, this movie is not a fiction. One of my friends is a straight-A student, plays violin and piano, always very polite and outgoing. My Mom used to call her "the perfect kid". But they eventually found out she had been sneaking out home around midnight after her parents are asleep. She hang out with a group of college students. And one night she totally passes out and didn't make it home.
Parents here have strong opinions against cannabis. Most of us just don't tell them because there is no hope for a meaningful conversation.
The New Legends of Monkey (2018)
I am a Chinese living in China and this is one of the best adaptation I've seen.
"Journey to the West" is one of my favorite Chinese classical novel. I really love the story and the creativity delivered by the author hundreds of years ago.
I was not a believer that any foreigner can understand the story and make good adaptation until I see this TV series. I just cannot wait for the next episode.
A good adaptation should never be exactly the same as the original one. A good adaptation should take the fun elements from the original literature and rearrange other innovation into another great story. And this TV show really made it.
I am sure if Wú ChengEn was still alive, he will applause this TV show.
Batman Ninja (2018)
I am a hardcore Batman fan and I love this movie
I am a big Batman fan since I was three years old.
This movie is so far the second best Batman movie I ever seen.
So many new elements and the team is really creative to make an exciting new Batman movie if you are tired of seeing Ben Affleck like me.
Don't believe the bad reviews and just watch the movie, you won't regret.
Tokyo Idols (2017)
There are more to discuss about Japanese Idols
This is a good documentary movie. It really reflects the real life of an "average" idol in Japan.
However, there are much more to discuss about this "Idol Phenomenon" in Japan.
Unfortunately, this film didn't discuss much more beyond what other Japanese documentary has already covered. But for English speaking audience this may be their first time understanding a small part of this unique social event in Japan.
I did a bit studies in this phenomenon.
AKB48 is briefly mentioned in this film. As a milestone of idol industry, their new approach to audience and business model are already deeply discussed in many Japanese documentary movies. This is probably
There are also many "underground idols" struggle very hard to get more fans and publicity. They have to live a ghetto life because they aren't making enough money while they are chasing their dreams. A couple of Japanese documentary has revealed it.
Until now, there are only books but not yet a film discuss two new phenomenons in this industry.
The first one is the impact of the social network. It burst a huge change to this industry. And there are always new things changed every year. For example, SHOWROOM, which showed up during this movie, was a mainstream "idol-focus" live streaming website. It's the most important live streaming website for idol industry in year 2017.
The second one is how "local idols" start to really mean it. NGT48 was not the first idol group focus on local audience and work with local enterprise. But NGT48 was the first idol group actually boost up the GDP of the local area(Niigatta Prefecture in this case), acknowledged by local government, residents, and enterprise.
Japan is the only country that has so many idols and mascots that many festivals and conferences have audience and participants for more than 10,000 people, thus budget and income.
Watchmen (2009)
As good as Batman: Dark Knight
A lot of Superhero movies tried to give the audience a good story. In most of recent super hero stories, characters live in more realistic worlds.
Unfortunately, many of them still failed to forge villains with characteristics in depth. It's unbearable to see stupid stories about people who want to achieve world domination, to revenge his family, to be obsessed a silly idea so he needs to destroy the world, to collect souls, to create a new land for demons/aliens/neo-humans/etc.
This movie is not 'yet another superhero movie'. It didn't disappoint me like many other superhero movies.
There are only two Superhero movies I would recommend. This movie, and Batman: Dark Knight.
Kimi no na wa. (2016)
A movie you must watch
There are only a limited number of animation movies that make every frame look like an artisan masterpiece of drawing. I have watched Makoto Shinkai's previous movies. They were very beautiful too, but the stories were a bit slow and boring. Your Name started with a typical sci-fi settings. Yes, you have heard about this kind of stories many many times. But wait for the story-line emerges you for the exact feeling of the main character. I feel like a lot more stories can be told but Shinkai tried hard to give a shorter version. I hope more deleted scenes will be available in the BlueRay version.
Quality: Extremely high. Story: Very good; makes you think about it afterwards. Music: I enjoyed it.
Hellowoo goseuteu (2010)
Wait for the ending.
The movie is about a man obsessed by four ghosts.
These four ghosts refused to leave him alone until this poor guy help the ghosts to do what they didn't make it when they were alive.
Yes, like all Korean movies, it's also a love story.
Yes, this is such a cliché and I was about to give this movie 6 out of 10.
Yes, just everyone said. There came the ending ....... The best ending I haven't seen for a very long time. I loved it and I cried.
I guess the story was too plain so I ignored all the clues this movie has been telling the audiences. There are so many clues in this movie. I hate myself was too arrogant to think "ahh, another stupid movie. He helped the ghosts and the ghosts will help him." I was wrong.
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
Watched it in year 2017. Loved it.
I have this movie in my bookmark link for like several months. The title and the trailer of this movie didn't attract me at all. Because the title pretty much already told me there is no much contents in this story. It turned out I was right, yet a very simple story with overwhelming emotional moments. I fell in love to this movie in the first 10 minutes with its unique background of the character. If you have your own life-stories, you can resonate with the conversation. Unfortunately this is a movie for people who have really lived, enjoyed, and suffered. Probably very boring to many young people. I will definitely recommend this to people in my age. Not to mention the music is beautiful.
Last Shift (2014)
Very good horror.
This is one of the best horror movie I've watched recently. After watching tons and tons of horror movies, I can easily recognize all "horror factors" in all modern horror movies. A good horror movie arrange them with good timing, and with good corresponding to story line. Not to mention the script write the ending very well. They choose the best way to end this movie among many choices.
The acting is okay.
There are some moments can be improved with some atmosphere music instead of background noise or sound effect.
Anyway, if you are a horror hardcore. You will understand what I say. But you can ignore this movie if you like superstar or if you expect any nude scenes.
The Babadook (2014)
Ending is not well-explained
spoiler alert!
This is NOT a demon obsessed movie, but it made itself look like one. The idea is not new. Many good horror/thriller movies have similar story, for example, hide-and-seek. Nonetheless this movie has a pretty good style of story telling.
Many audiences don't like a confusing ending that's not well-explained. Unfortunately this movie falls into this category, which I actually like a lot. Hints for the true story are between casual lines and are sufficient for a viewer to get a rough idea what's going on.
If you don't like to solve the puzzle of the hidden meanings in the graphics and in conversation, then don't watch this movie.
Kung Fury (2015)
I grew up in 80s and this movie is awesome
This is probably the most entertaining movie I ever had in this past 20 or so years. The last time I got this kind of excitement, I was a third grader. They did a great job to put all these fun factors together: KungFu, Lamborghini, David Hasselhoff, Ninja, Miami Police, Fuhrer, WWII, Nazi, Vikings, Thor, Robot, 80's. Even my wife, who only watches drama, love the way it is made. It's a shame the elements in this movie doesn't work for you. What they did for funding was also brilliant. I've never seen a studio raise money on KickStarter, and they did it. This is probably going to be the new way of people getting money when they haev a good idea for movie. And 30min is just right. This is a smart movie length. Whoever enjoys it, like me, gets one more awesome fun movie for our life. =)
Kingdom Come (2014)
It's a nice movie and I see why some people give low ratings to this movie
Reasons for bad ratings:
Any horror/thriller fan, like me, will immediately figure how the story will be in the first 10 minutes. The plot components are very commonly seen in many other old movies. Also, I don't recommend atheists to watch this movie. Like many, this is yet another movie carrying hidden Christianity values.
Why I think it deserves a good rating:
It's actually a well-made movie. I am not bothered by a story with an ending easy to guess, as long as it's well developed towards the ending. The actors are not the best but they did really descent jobs. I hope I will see Jason Martorino in more movies. I can see his potentials.
Conclusion:
This is a good casual horror movie choice if you don't watch horror movies heavily. Plus it's free if you have Amazon Prime.
