I agree with all reviewers of this film, though they don't seem to agree one with the other. The thing is they're all right depending on how you focus on it. The other point is most of the reviewers, if not all of them, are French. And that is the point. You have to be French, otherwise, you'll pass over what makes this film so brilliant. In other words, what would be the point watching "gone with the wind" being deaf and blind? Still, if you are able to catch the delicious subtleness and unbelievable richness of Parisian argot (slang spoken for over 500 years makes it vintage. doesn't it ?), it is definitely a must see. Still, I gave it a 10 -1 rating. 10 because it's worth it, minus 1 because it's French.

It could rain... Actually, I bought this DVD from a deep southern Spain retail store and spent 1.5 for it. Not bad at all if you think of the many uses you can get out of it, either you decide to play it or not. It can work as a valuable Frisbee, shooting plate, glass stand or whatever you can imagine. In case you decide to give it a chance on your player, you can still enjoy the soundtrack (no reviewer seemed to mention it, but it's quite OK if you watch it with your eyes wide shut and try to figure out what a good film director could have done with it). Besides, it allowed me to practice my English, as the Spanish subtitles were not bad, simply... worse. That is in my opinion what it's worth. So I definitely will continue thinking it COULD be worse.

a nice surprise

Can't remember where I got this movie from, but it suddenly appeared off my DVD shelf, as it had been there for months and I always skipped over playing it. Anyway, moved by the hand of huge laziness, I decided to give it a chance and feed my tray with what I thought was a slice of pure digitalized boredom. The result was a nice surprise. Obviously, this is not the flick of the century, but the plot line is consistent enough to keep you in for the whole runtime long. Atmosphere is particularly dense and thrilling (3 phone calls during the viewing didn't manage to kick me off it !), highlighted by a really efficient soundtrack. The cast is just right as it should be, and the breathtaking beauty of Caro (Kristen Wilson) will do anything but spoil it. The machete/drums/ceremonial scheme, usually utterly heavy in this kind of film, is always kept on a due balance, which, I figure out, must be quite a challenge for the editors. I gave it a 6/10 which means, in my opinion, frames this movie as (at least) advisable/worth watching.

As far as i'm concerned it's the only film i would give a plain 10 if imdb' s voting system allowed half or 1/10th point ratings. I've seen it about 20 times and never got fed up. I'm still enjoying details i didn't notice or remember previously. Terry Gilliam, an outstanding film director, hits the climax of his art. Everything is brilliant, from the outline plot to photography. Gilliams lures us into his indescribable naive-futuristic oneiric world on a trip most viewers won' t easily come back. Even De Niro's knockout as an outlawed plumber leaves us wordless. Plastic surgery is also revisited in a very "sui generis" way. All my plastic surgeon friends agree with me on this matter. Everyone should watch this movie. A masterpiece.

For once, I agree with most comment reports on this movie. It could have been great, since it features many valuable items (soundtrack, image, special FX, some pretty good acting, too). But the whole of it leaves you thirsty, and gets you saturated with "gothicware". This movie is not really a film, it's a sophism..
