Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978)
A funny farce, failed by poor DVD product.
I loved this delightful farce, when it came out in the theaters, decades ago. Segal, Bisset, and Morley, are a joy to watch. I waited for years fro the DVD format to hit the shelves. What a disappointing experience. The disc is not letterbox, nor closed captioned, there is NO Menu, and looks no better than a VSH tape. There is a disclaimer, in fine print, that the DVD will only play on DVD "Play only" devices, and may not play on your PC. WD cheaped out on this product. The story is filled with fine foods, kitchen antics, and rapid fire funnies. It was filmed on location all over Europe. The grizzly murders, are shocking. The many characters are played broadly, but then this a comedy. Well worth your time.
Eden Log (2007)
eden log
I found the first 3 to 5 minutes annoying. Snips of scene flashing on screen got boring. Someone went to school and thought flashing lights were really cool. A bit of an overkill. Darkness all through the film adds to the feeling that perhaps you don't want to know what is happening. The story unfolds in bits and pieces, as the main character stumbles through a maze of tunnels, caves or what ever. More flashy lights. For the most part I found the story interesting. Most of the backdrop, and sets are very compelling, especially toward the end. The grainy B/W photography, adds to the suspense, as does the hollow echoy sound. Loved the ending. I have just watched it once, but I will probably watch it again. Enjoy, good Sci-Fi.
Vampyr (1932)
in between movie
I bought this DVD, not knowing what to expect. The film seems to be caught between Silent film technique, and the sound era. There are few lines spoken, and some lines are not captioned. You must guess at their meaning. There are almost no sound effects. Most of the film plays like a silent film, with a lot of facial expressions, to tell the story. The film also relies on characters reading from a book to set the theme and tell the story. The audience could read the pages , as the actor turned them. The writing is in German script, and hard to read. The Special effects must have been great, in their day. The lighting of shadowy scenes, and camera angles in the photography, seems ahead of its' time. The story is hard to follow, and the editing somewhat choppy, but stay with it, You will get it in the end. This film is in German with A FEW subtitles.
Lock Up Your Daughters! (1969)
Worthy of DVD production
I saw this film when it came out, and loved it.. I fell in love with the ribald humor. I especially like the "asides" to the camara. The take off on the "Eating " scene in Tom Jones is a riot. I saw this film once more on Cable about a year or two ago. That leads me to belive it is available on tape , somewhere. I copied it to tape, but the quality is fair. I would buy this film on DVD if it came out.
Cold Turkey (1971)
this is a comedy that needs to be on DVD.
This comedy is 30 years old, but with today's cries about NO SMOKING it is relivant, and FUNNY! Dick Van Dyke is a riot along with Bob and Ray, and the rest of the "characters" from a small town. The town, led by van dyke , the local preacher, try to quit smoking for 30 days to win a 25 mil$ prize, offered by a tobacco co. for any town that can stop smoking. This film needs to be on DVD. FOR anyone who ever tried to quit "Cold Turkey" , this film will bring back memories, whether you succeded or not.
Der Name der Rose (1986)
mystery/history/religion/
I have seen The name of the Rose many times. It is one of my favorite Connery films. The atmosphere is so realistic, one can SMELL the dark ages of unwashed Europe. I love to watch actors excel in their craft. Connery, Slater {wow} Abraham, and Perlman{utterly spellbinding] and the rest are a pleasure to behold. SOMEONE MUST GET THIS FILM PROPERLY XFERRED TO D.V.D.
