Is It Cake? (2022– )
One glaring issue
1 April 2022
I am only writing this review because I don't think it will come up in a natural conversation and it's been ringing in my head for days. The concept is fun and entertaining. That's not a problem. The problem is that the host sounds and looks like a serial killer and the contestants are being held hostage on a soundstage. Add in the forced laughter from the contestants and it makes you feel like they're in danger. His smile and the way he delivers his jokes is just bone chilling, and they let this man near knives. You can probably re-edit scenes from this show and pass it off for a horror movie.

Great film, despite the lack of zombies.
13 November 2012
I'm really glad this movie got made. In the wake following the eventual atrocity that befell the Resident Evil live action series (I'm looking at you, Extinction), it was needed that a good Resident Evil movie gets made. And, luckily, it did. Rather than basing the movie in it's own universe, Degeneration is actually directly linked the the game series, almost guaranteeing that it will be good. That was a major flaw that Resident Evil: Extinction did with the live action movies, the series began to stray very far away from the game series. But back to Degeneration for now.

One of the first thing people bring up when talking about Resident Evil: Degeneration is that there is an extreme lack of zombies present throughout. And being as this is Resident Evil it's not something that you really want to see. However, it is to be noted that this decision was possibly made to make distinct differences between the video game series to the movie series. This also made room for more story elements, but that's also where it's greatest flaw lies. There is an extreme absence in plot. It's introduced and developed, but the story is never fully focused on. It's easy to overlook this because of what it had going for it.

There are some very extreme positives about this flick. All of the action scenes were amazing. The opening 20-30 minutes or so could be the most entertaining I've ever seen. The setting is established perfectly, but I won't go into full detail about it to avoid any spoilers. It's also worth noting that the voice actress who voiced Claire Redfield returned to lend her voice to the project, as did one of the actors who voiced Leon. The animation was fluent, even if the faces of the characters look like they were just pasted on. The action scenes were fast paced and really enjoyable from start to end, leaving little left to be desired.

If you're a fan of the Resident Evil series you probably enjoyed it. I know I did. But there are a few minor flaws, including some of the animation. Comparing this movie to the Final Fantasy movie, I think Final Fantasy had better computer graphics. However, if you want something to stick true with the Resident Evil series and are sick of the terrible titles that keep getting released, then this movie is something you'll enjoy.

My rating? 8/10.

Visually Stunning
4 July 2012
Hayao Miyazaki is clearly one of the best directors to this day. His best movie is, in my opinion, definitely Princess Mononoke. Being a fan of Miyazaki's work like Spirited Away, The Secret World of Arietty (which he only wrote), Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso (I could name more but back to the review) I had no little expectations for such an amazing film, boy was I wrong. My expectations were greatly surpassed and what we receive is one of the most visually stunning films of all time.

The story is about a young warrior who has a curse put upon him by a raging boar demon-god. He sets out on a journey to the western forests where he hopes to find a cure that would lift the curse from him. It's definitely like Hayao Miyazaki's style.

The characters are also pretty awesome. The film's main antagonist, Lady Eboshi, develops so nicely you have this real sort of hatred towards her, one that should be present in every film. She has a reason for it though, she wants success and wants the ability to survive. The protagonist, Ashitaka, is a cool character. He sees peace on both sides between the forest gods who want the humans dead, and the humans who want the gods dead. He can't find an ally on either side directly and he constantly is in a struggle for survival. There's a good romance story between San (the human who believes she is a wolf-god) and Ashitaka and over the course of the movie their relationship develops a ton. You actually get an emotional attachment to the characters, something that's very rare. While they aren't directly involved with one-another, you can see the love between them. It's rather heart-warming considering it's a film about death and stuff.

The voice acting is great, as expected. With an all-star cast that include Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, John Di Maggio, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Gillian Anderson, it's hard to believe that the voice acting wouldn't be good. It has a very good musical score that contains intense and emotional factors, never leaving the action bland or boring by complete silence.

There's much to enjoy about Princess Mononoke. It's just a film in general that's great to watch. Lots of colours are featured and leaves a stunning visual impact that really catches the eye. The animators all deserve recognition, as the animation blends in with the colours and nothing is absent. It gives the film industry a perfect reason why hand-drawn films are nearly always better than computer animation.

In all, Princess Mononoke is one amazing film. Definitely one of the all time best and it leaves nothing out. There were intense sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat while keeping the main attraction to the visual scenery. Everything was perfect and it's difficult to find any errors with such a masterpiece. Princess Mononoke is definitely an overlooked film. It also goes to show that special effects aren't the only thing to make a film look beautiful.

Mortal Kombat (1995)
7/10
Awesome adaptation!
4 June 2012
The only way I can review this is the pros, cons, similarities, and differences between the game and the movie.

Similarities:

1. The characters from the game series make appearances. Some of these include Kano, Sonya, Rayden, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Shang Tsung, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Goro.

2. Scorpion has his iconic "Get over here!" accompanied by the blades that stick out from his hands.

3. Each character for the most part have relatively similar backgrounds when it comes to the movie and the game.

4. MK theme was present in a few fight scenes. The kick-ass theme song that sticks in your head was used in the opening credits and the closing ones.

5. Three words: Johnny Cage's nutshots.

Differences:

1. Little to no, and I mean NO, fatalities are present in the movie. There is a lot of MK-like action throughout but the one thing that truly made the games awesome is completely left out. To fill you in if you haven't played the games, fatalities are pretty much an attempt (and success) at you being able to brutally murder your opponent in as gruesome style as possible.

2. No blood. I understand that New Line is trying to make the movie more appealing to wide varieties of audiences, but Mortal Kombat without blood isn't Mortal Kombat. This is probably the reason why no fatalities are involved.

Pros:

1. The movie has some damn good action scenes in it. They were simply entertaining to watch and each fight didn't drag out for a long excessive period of time.

2. The acting wasn't mediocre like I believed it would be. Like so many other game-to-movie crossovers the major appeal is to display the perception of how games "should" be made. I put 'should' in quotes because it fails most of the time, but Mortal Kombat managed to put all of that behind it and made a pretty good movie.

3. Paul W.S. Anderson. Again he has managed to do an awesome job with these video game adaptations. Although it was after, his best work I believe was with the Resident Evil movie seven years later. Personally, I think he's best when it comes to adapting, which is a rare cause when it comes to these types of movies. For example: Uwe Boll. Worst director of all time and he always managed to ruin some pretty good games (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Far Cry, Postal).

Cons:

1. The CGI. Oh my lord was this film's CGI terrible. I mean it was just simply AWFUL. Goro looked like it was animated by a first grader. The visual scenery is great and all the money probably went towards making that aspect look real but they completely ignored this very one distracting aspect.

2. The costumes weren't bad, but they weren't as good as I would have expected. I like how Reptile was a ninja, but Rayden doesn't look anything like he does in the games. An argument can be made that he was in mortal form during the video games to compete in the tournament so that's why they look so differently, but I object to that because he looks just so ridiculous.

3. Like I stated before, no blood is present. It's understandable that the attempt was made to make it PG-13 and all but if this could be remade with more blood...a lot more blood, then it could be made better. That's not something I would usually say, but hey, it's Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat is all about brutality.

Despite the cons and differences it doesn't make this movie any less enjoyable to watch. It's all around pretty good, could have been better, but I'm still fine by what I received.

Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny...
24 April 2012
Just say the title, Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny. I read that this movie was bad but a movie this bad I didn't even think was possible. It is quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. The sound quality sucked, the music was plain terrible, and everything about it sucked.

The movie starts with an establishing shot of the North Pole, which is about seven reindeer in a very grassy field with no snow present. The plot is that Santa is stuck in an inch or two of sand in Florida. He calls upon a bunch of small children by singing a song, just one of the many terrible musical numbers in this movie. The kids and Santa try everything to get Santa out of the sand but nothing works. They bring a horse, a pig, a donkey, and a gorilla(?) to try and lift Santa's sleigh out of the sand but nothing works. To cheer the kids up Santa begins to tell the story of Thumbelina. Before I move onto Thumbelina I have to state that the entire movie-inside-a-movie contains 100% archive footage. The footage is taken directly from another movie filmed at Pirate's World, the same place where this atrocity was filmed, and was made two years prior to 'The Ice Cream Bunny' back in 1970.

Thumbelina is probably the worst part of the entire movie. Thumbelina lasts longer than the actual movie itself for you have to sit through another movie entirely and still ache in the agony being produced by simply staring at your screen. Thumbelina tells the story of a little girl, literally, she's only two inches tall (George Little meet your grandmother). Thumbelina's mother obtains her through a magical seed that sprouts a plant that she crawls out of, so now there is a two inch tall girl living in a normal house. She gets abducted by two frogs from her home with a regular sized mother. She escapes the frogs and gets forced into marrying a mole named Mr. Digger. All throughout this movie there are horrible musical numbers that last for minutes on end. The music she sings to overpowers her voice so even if the songs were good it wouldn't matter because all you hear is repetitive music all throughout the movie. The acting is another thing. The acting in this movie is TERRIBLE. I put "terrible" in caps because I want to emphasize how bad it is. It's like they're talking but...they...pause... between every word they say. Even then the music still manages to overpower the actors voices'. It's hard to completely explain how bad this movie is I just can't do it. Think of it as making Ed Wood or Uwe Boll look like Alfred Hitchcock or Stanley Kubrick.

Enough of Thumbelina now and more Santa! The "main" story doesn't make up for the amount of time (and brain cells) lost during the Thumbelina because it's just as bad anyway. Bad acting, bad singing, bad music, bad camera-work, bad story, and bad editing are just some of the very many factors that make this movie so bad. If you hadn't noticed I haven't said anything positive yet. Now normally I find something good to say about the movie, but I can't find it one this time.

Bug (2006)
5/10
Not Very Interesting
23 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
'Bug' is about a man and a woman in a motel room that stay together only to learn that the room is infested with bugs. The word "Bug" isn't even said until about 45 minutes in, by this time the viewer gets tired and bored. I read a lot of reviews claiming how interesting this film is. But frankly, I find nothing very interesting about it. For about 95 minutes, I watched a very slow, unthoughtful, and bad movie where nothing happens and rarely any conflict is present. The characters were bland and nothing was going on that actually connected you with them. The camera work wasn't done that good. It looked like they tried to jam as much of a characters face into one shot as they could. The entire film was infected with shots that were taken from too far of a distance, or too close for comfort. There are scenes where the characters have their back turned to the camera which blocks out a lot of sound that one should normally hear in an average film.

One thing that was done right was actually capturing the characters mental capability. By this I mean they go from actually having sanity to full out insanity. Even though this was done well, they rushed to transitions since nothing happens for approximately 45 minutes. But even then the bugs don't have a significant role until the end, and even then they don't have a big role.

In conclusion, the movie was full of flaws. Only thing that I care to mention that are good were the mental capacity of characters. It was a boring film with bad camera work for a bunch of the time, crappy characters, and there aren't any bugs present on screen at all. It did display some brutality that makes you cringe strongly with sound effects and all. Would I recommend it? Not at all. I guess you an say that all this disappointment really BUGGED me...pun intended.

Braindead (1992)
8/10
Hilarious Horror Entertainment
5 January 2012
A lot of people I talk to are unaware of Braindead/Dead Alive. When I mention this is one of Peter Jackson's first films they automatically assume it will be like his Lord of the Rings trilogy. No, this is unlike anything else Jackson has ever done. Probably my favourite zombie movie of all time and one of my favourite horror movies altogether, Braindead is an absolute blast to watch.

Braindead takes place in a small town in New Zealand. The film is about an old woman who gets bitten my a Sumatran Rat Monkey, composed of dreaded stop-motion effects. Soon after being bitten she dies but returns from the dead as a zombie. The woman runs around infecting (and sometimes eating) dogs, neighboors, and friends and family. It is only up to her socially awkward son Lionel to stop her. Along to help Lionel is his girlfriend he meets days before.

Braindead contains some of the most hilarious scenes of all time. There is one scene of a zombie baby being tossed around in a park as residents look in horror at what Lionel is doing to this baby of his. Of course it isn't his baby though, it is the baby of two zombies. How did they end up having this baby? Take a guess. While everyone else is watching Lionel beat this baby off of poles and such, there is a drunken guy who is cheering him on.

A lot of the characters who put the comedy into the film didn't have very big roles at all. As mentioned before, the homeless drunk in the park has little to know role in the film whatsoever and is mainly there for comedy. But sometimes it isn't the characters who aren't funny, it's the scenes themselves. Kind of like when a priest is fighting a bunch of zombies using martial arts. Or one of the most gruesome scenes of all time when the main character slices zombies up with a lawnmower.

Unlike a lot of other zombie movies, this one didn't have a dark feel to it. It was actually a feel good movie. But it was hard to take seriously over the comedy. However there are some emotionally intense scenes in it. Point is, don't expect to take this very seriously because you aren't getting a serious movie.

It's a classic and there is no doubt about it. Can you go wrong with zombie movies? Not really. The scenes were classic. They were incredibly hilarious and always make me laugh. The costume designs were terrible but great at the same time while the stop motion effects were just plain awesome. If you want to have an awesome time or don't want to think too much and have some fun then watch this movie.

Rambo (2008)
7/10
20 Years Later and Stallone Still Has It
21 December 2011
20 years after Rambo III, Stallone picks up the guns and blasts his way through everyone in his path. This time he is blasting his way through the jungle to rescue some Christians who were captured by a local infantry camp. It's easily believable that this film has one of the highest body counts of all time, and the highest of the entire Rambo series. After 20 years, people thought that there was no way Stallone still had it in him to come back as Rambo for one last time, they were wrong. Yet again Sylvester Stallone comes back as one of the best action heroes of all time.

Surprisingly, the quality of Rambo was really good. Usually sequels are never very good, especially ones after 20 years of the original, but there was good effort put into the script and the action scenes are mind-blowing. Lots of people getting shot and at least 80 people are shot and killed within the course of just 5 minutes. So many bullets flying around it's hard to understand who's shooting who. Nevertheless, lots of limbs getting torn apart and lots of exploding heads.

The film almost entirely takes place in the jungle, a nice setting for an action flick. The scenes at nighttime weren't very hard to follow nor were they dragged on for a large amount of time. Cinematography was pretty good, well placed cameras that show the brains of an exploding head flying all over the lens. So many people get ripped apart graphically and the cameras are so close to the action you can't miss a thing.

Overall it was great as an action movie, but if it wasn't filmed the way it was it probably wouldn't be as good.

8/10.

Cliché With a Few Jump Scenes
2 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The film is a prequel to the first Paranormal Activity, but naming is Paranormal Activity 3 is misleading. The title makes you think it will be a sequel, but someone who hasn't seen the trailers and knows little about the series will have no idea what's going on and who the characters are. The film is about Katie and Kristi and their parents in the 1980s. Katie thinks that she is seeing a man named Tobe, no wait, not a man but rather a demon. The mother denies the fact that Katie thinks she is seeing Tobe so the father sets cameras around the house. This sounds very familiar to the previous films doesn't it? Well, as the film progresses on and on more paranormal activity comes into play.

The film is shot using two cameras. Many scenes are played at night and very little stuff goes on for the first half of the film or so. It feels like you are watching the same scene over and over again, it gets really boring. This movie took scenes and ideas from previous popular films before this that if you have some experience watching the movies before hand you know what is coming up. I think it is safe to say that Paranormal Activity 3 is a cliché horror film.

The film follows the same formula as its previous films. Something strange happens, family sets up cameras, stuff happens then the film ends. I will admit that the movie made me jump a couple times but it won't give you nightmares or you won't be scared after leaving the theater. It was very predictable at points and there are no actual camera angles it is always shot from a single hand-held camera. Paranormal Activity is shot in the form of a documentary pretty much.

The title is misleading, also. Paranormal Activity 3 sounds like another sequel, and judging by the ending of the second one you think there can't be anymore. But no, just another reason to try to make money. Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel, and so a common name for prequels contain the words "The Beginning". This is just going to be another series that is strictly just going to be made for the money. The series is always shot on low budget with actors with rarely any experience at all and single setting scenes.

No I don't hate the movie if that is the idea you are getting, but just the way it was filmed and the fact it seems like you are watching the same thing over and over again bugged me a lot. It ties in nicely with the other films and it completes the series. There is a cliffhanger that is a sure setup for another sequel, which I hope draws the conclusion to the series for once.

Piece of S**T
14 October 2011
Growing up I've LOVED the House of the Dead video game. It's left a huge impression on me and I've been a fan of zombies since. Then the movie can along and negated every credibility and love that House of the Dead has given me.

I am almost ashamed I actually watched this. Watching this movie was an insult. When you think 'House of the Dead', where do you think it will take place? A house, as you would suppose. WRONG, the film takes place on an island, of course there was a house that was only there for 5-10 minutes, at most. Why would they call it 'House of the Dead' then? Because Uwe Boll has the biggest marketing scam of all time. Choose a popular game title then create a movie from that. The dialogue was very very poorly written. Almost no creativity was put towards the film.

There were so many continuity errors it is almost hard to keep track. An example is that weapons that the characters use will switch, sometimes they will even disappear. I don't know maybe the director forgot to give them weapons between cuts I don't want to know either.

The acting was so bad. There was very little expressions given in their speech and all responses were clearly faked. But it wasn't the actors' fault entirely. To go along with working for the worst director of all time, this had easily one of the most laughable scripts ever written that wasn't a comedy. The dialogue was just so bad. Here's an example that I'll use when the characters engage in a fight with the villain, who isn't a villain really:

Rudy: You did all this to become immortal. Why?

Castillo: To live forever!

I don't know why these lines are so horrible, maybe it has something to do with Castillo not even answering Rudy's question. All he did was define immortality, I manged to figure that much out on my own. No questions were answered and when something gets revealed that's supposed to shock the audience I was just as confused at the end as I was when trying to piece together similarities between the game and the film. Despite the horrible acting, it is better than the game's acting, but that isn't really saying too much.

Have I mentioned the fight scenes? They were just terrible. These people came to a rave on an island, they're just ordinary people like everyone else. But when they begin to engage in a fight all of a sudden the humans become martial arts masters. There was a 10 minute zombie showdown scene that is a perfect display on how not to film a zombie action scene. Nope, I take that back. That isn't how you should film an action scene PERIOD. The guns abilities to shoot are way over-exaggerated and it felt like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, minus the awesomeness of course. It's ridiculous what the weapons can do, I appreciate ridiculous but this was just pathetic. As well as the people becoming martial artists, well the zombies do too. If that doesn't say something then nothing does.

The movie was just cliché, WAY too many shots in which the camera would rotate around a specific character. The more the filmmakers used it the more quickly I wanted the scene to end. Deaths are never actually seen on screen, but instead they included clips of the 'House of the Dead' video game or the screen just fades into an eye-burning red, like your closing your eyes while looking into a light. All around the film was almost unbearable to even watch. Plus, using clips is just another example that the movie had no reason to be so different from the game because they had source material to work with.

My rating for this abomination: 1/10

If you want an accurate representation on how much this film has effected my taste for zombie movies, then I'll tell you. I have only seen one zombie flick since watching House of the Dead. Yes, it's that bad.

Hard Boiled (1992)
8/10
Best Action Movie Ever
16 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
When I say best action movie, I mean THE best action movie, period. What isn't there to like about this movie? Incredible action sequences, intense gunfights, and a ridiculous amount of bodies getting impaled with bullets. This makes Die Hard look like a child's book. The explosions are way exaggerated, in a good way though. Pretty much in every gunfight every single person and near the end pretty much everything explodes. This film wasn't worthless action or there was too much, but this film in my books is easily considered one of the greatest action-features of all time. Hong Kong can sure make some good films, but to add onto the great movies from there you have Hard-Boiled. The film is currently ranked as the 9th highest body count in a single movie. The characters cause so much mayhem it practically crosses the line of either thinking "What's happening right now?" and "This is totally amazing". Both of these thoughts live up to what happens in this film. I could watch this movie over and over again but it is always the same, always pure amazing.

Pingu (1980–2006)
Fun For All Ages
1 September 2011
Who doesn't like watching clay penguins running around talking random gibberish for 5 minutes? Even though the show is only 5 minutes an episode and half of the time you don't understand a thing that is coming out of the mouths of these funny little creatures it gets the message through to you, the message that not everything need to make sense to be brilliant. There is pretty much no plot but has the characters of the show and every episode creates some whacky scenario for Pingu. Scenarios vary from fishing (which is where he meets Robbie the seal), the dreaming about a very disturbing walrus that made me cry as a child. Pingu is lots of fun to watch especially if you aren't looking for something intelligent to watch. The older I still love this show.

Godzilla (I) (1998)
5/10
A Plot less Piece of Trash
21 July 2011
Why did I expect anything from this movie? Roland Emmerich directed it. But the original Godzilla was just so good, why can't it ever stick true to the original 1954 version? This film was not what Godzilla was meant to be. A total disaster on most levels of quality. This truly is the Godzilla film that was never supposed to be made. Why the film was remade was beyond me, but it was just straight up bad.

There was no plot to the remake of the classic film we all know. It was basically meant to be based around the "new" design of the beast. There was nothing alike from the original Japanese version to the American remake. Godzilla was the beast, okay that's one thing but what else was there? If you are going to base a film off of another at least give a few names related to the first one. No names of characters were mentioned from the original. Nothing stuck true to the great original.

Godzilla in 1998 was strictly dedicated towards the use of CGI. The effects were impressive but the way Gojira was designed was nothing at all like the 1954 Gojira. Knowing Emmerich I knew there would be a tremendous amount of CGI involved, but there was so much that the plot became unbearable, well that is from what plot there ever was initially. Little to no plot was explained along with the origins of Godzilla like there was in the original.

The final thing that was poor about this film was the acting. Maria Pitillo was awful in this film. From her so called "crying" to, well everything else was just so bad. I don't know if it was just bad directing or if she was just naturally horrible. Either way, she was a bad choice for the role. Speaking of bad choices, why is Matthew Broderick in this? From his famous role as Ferris Bueller I never suspected he would be a scientist that is trying to stop a giant reptile.

The movie was just overall bad. It was a bit entertaining to say the most of it and there were impressive effects. But that isn't all a film needs to be good. Emmerich doesn't care about a film being good or bad. This film could be shot in red and yellow colouring and he still wouldn't care because he just wants to get money. Do NOT see this atrocious, plot less piece of garbage Emmerich considers a movie, even if the title draws your attention.

Just to sum it up, there was horrible acting and Godzilla didn't look anything alike what he did in 1954. Not to mention there is no plot whatsoever, kind of basing itself off of all the other ones and letting those story lines take its place. But the film is supposed to be a remake so it just throws a curve ball and if you haven't seen the original, well then you don't really have much of a chance when it comes to understanding what's going on half of the time.

The Return of the King Review: Extended Cut
4 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
For the first time since its theater release I have just finished 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy. Which is by far the greatest trilogy ever made. There were too many spectacular traits of this film that it was almost impossible to remember all of them. There was a terrific musical score, epic battle scenes that last for about a 1 hour span time, great characters and greatly succeeded on making you feel the worst of everything then comes back around for all hope to be regained. This is basically speaking upon the entire trilogy since it is pretty much one big film.

It is completely understandable why this film won every single Oscar for which it was nominated in, but one thing that was wrong was that it wasn't nominated for enough things. This film should have been nominated and won all categories that it would be qualified for.

There were amazing visual effects and spectacular set design. I was blown away by the fact that I thought such effects and designs could ever be achieved by anyone. There were no flaws in any part of the film, no revealing mistakes and it was absolutely flawless.

The characters in 'The Return of the King' were the same as always, marvelous. There was a spectacular build up to feeling the proper emotions in which were meant to be shown and perfectly developed them in every way possible. There was hatred, feelings, and emotions attached to each character to feel everything that was meant to be felt. Each actor was phenomenal in every aspect and seemed to be a perfect fit for everything.

The greatest thing above all though was the epic tale. There were subplots that made the movie much more epic and entertaining than anything I have ever seen before. There were suspenseful moments with a giant tarantula attacking the characters, battle scenes that last for a seemingly eternity and made you feel the very worst of everything that could happen.

This truly is a masterpiece that can be seen over and over again but will keep you right where you sit and you will not leave your seat until the very end. Despite its length, it is still %100 worth the watch, even the 4 1/2 hours extended cut needs to be seen.

One of the Best of 2010
21 June 2011
'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' was executed from a graphic novel to a film very nicely but didn't make it a better film. The movie was great but from comic to movie really didn't make it any better although it probably wasn't intended to make it better. This film exceeded all of my expectations and actually surprised me that a comic like this type could be made into a movie so nicely done. I immediately picked up the graphic novels and it explained a huge amount of references that never got displayed in this movie. I really really liked Michael Cera's performance in this and he continues to be exceptional. The film's tagline "An epic of epic epicness" really defines the film for what it is. It was funny, intense, and serious while it has it's own style of a film itself. 'Scott Pilgrim' had it's own type of humour, the intense fight scenes that were really fun to watch and see the creativity of the authors point of view. This is a fun movie and must see.

Greatest Movie of All Time
13 June 2011
There are so many things about this movie that were just amazing. To start off were the performances. Every actor played their roles amazing and were flawless with their acting (especially Spacey and Del Toro). This could be Kevin Spacey's best performance and very much deserved to win best supporting actor. The ending is possibly one of the most mind blowing, unsuspecting, and by far the greatest thing in all of movies. You get told all the information but then all of a sudden the writers throw a right-hand and knocks you right off track. My jaw dropped and I was speechless after watching this. If there was something that could ever top this movie it deserves to win every award that has ever been made. There was too much that was thrilling, suspenseful and jaw dropping that is worth every minute of your life. Now it's understandable why I could watch this movie 15 times and never get tired of it!

Resident Evil (2002)

Better Than I Thought
11 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Resident Evil is an action-packed horror fest. Some people love it for it and some hate it. I'm on the 'love-it' side, but there is no in between. You love it or you hate it. Most of the criticism about the RE film is that it doesn't stick true to the games. This is true, but to be honest, it doesn't effect my opinion on the matter. I love it, but a lot of people hate it. This is why I like it.

'Resident Evil' never struck me as a video game that could be made into a movie, but it did seem nicely done. Besides the bad acting throughout most of the movie, it was a pretty good movie. There was a lot of repetitive music but it was good because it totally fit the scenario and was pump-up music that was light then progresses to heavier and more intense. It was a bit slow at first but it gradually got faster, eventually I couldn't even notice the time passing by. The creatures were unique. There were interesting zombie-dogs and a massive four-legged creature in which I can't compare with anything running all over the place, it was quite freaky. The zombies were just typical zombies, no different than any other zombie movie you would see. 'Resident Evil' was entertaining and worth the 90 minutes you are spending,

Hot Fuzz (2007)

Funny, Ridiculous, A Total Blast!
28 May 2011
There was so many positive things about this movie. Like great chase scenes, ridiculous shootouts, and the music that completely fits the scenes. The chase scenes in 'Hot Fuzz' were so good, they became amusing and hilarious at the same time. As funny as this movie was, it was also had it's disturbing scenes along with the serious ones. All the music used was very well placed. The movie was ridiculous at most points, it came to the point of hysterical laughter. 'Hot Fuzz' wasn't stupid funny like most comedies are, it was random and had it's silly moments that you couldn't help but laugh at. There were very minor characters that were important in the bonding between each character. The story worked out quite well throughout, and was funny, disturbing, and entertaining in the end. It was a total blast that is a must see.

Not What I Wanted, But I Received Better
28 May 2011
The thing about these 'Pirates' movies is that somehow they are historically related to classic tales, in this case, it was to the famous Blackbeard. I think that he was the best choice as a historical figure. Blackbeard is very known and already sense the evil in him by hearing his name. Another thing that is related to the other movies is that there are the bits of humour throughout the entire thing. Some of the fight scenes were very very similar to the previous ones. This was worth the watch in 3-D. Recently there haven't been many good 3-D movies, but 'On Stranger Tides' was one that really was worth seeing. Johnny Depp yet again played another amazing performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. I hope to see another series being released in the near future.

Priest (2011)
5/10
Flawed, But Nonetheless Entertaining
17 May 2011
Priest was an entertaining movie with many flaws. The 3-D in this movie was poorly done. There were no moments where it felt like 3-D, but would be fine without it. There was an extreme lack of names given to the characters. There were about 5 or 6 people in 'Priest' who actually had a name given to them. For example, the priests name is just simply 'Priest', the priestesses name is 'Priestess' and so on. There weren't any full length scenes for the most part. They were like clip-length scene. There were a few pros though. There was decent acting throughout the movie. Being a short film I wanted it to start off quick, and quick is what I got. The summary of the events happening up to the present were told through a cartoon like battle with narration. The whole movie was enjoyable and entertaining. The vampires weren't really like vampires at all, other than the biting, vampires were completely different than what you would picture a vampire to look like.

My Rating: 7/10 -3 stars for flaws 7 stars for the entertainment and everything else that couldn't be argued as a flaw. It was worth the time, but not worth the money for 3-D. Wait for it to come on DVD if you intend on watching 'Priest'

Rio (2011)

Great Film
16 May 2011
There were so many things about this movie that were great. The colours, the music, the characters. There was so much it is hard to explain all of it. Usually music in movies doesn't appeal to me, but this was the opposite. The soundtrack was spectacular, it had some catchy tunes, and some songs to set the mood for the moment. The colourful nature of Rio was great, bright tropical colours that you would actually see in the jungles. 'Rio' had good characters and good decisions who to choose for the cast. The way they change was fairly well done. It also made you feel the proper emotion towards the characters, like anger or happiness. There was no scenes that weren't needed in the movie, they all seemed to be in the right spot. A short as the movie was, it still never felt as long as it was. 'Rio' was enjoyable enough that I wished it could never end. In all it was a great movie, one that you can watch over and over and not get sick of it.

My rating 8/10

A Beautiful Work of Art
8 May 2011
This is a spectacular tale of the man who just wanted to be normal. I first saw this recently, but not surprisingly it was a great movie. The story gets summed up pretty quick, gets told through a quick narration.

By far this is one of Johnny Depp's best roll. I can't think of anyone else who can play Edward Scissorhands like Johnny Depp did. Almost as if he was made for the roll. The use of make-up and costume design for Edward was amazing, creating the belief that he was actually a created experiment. It proves that Johnny Depp can play almost any roll, but this is the most significant.

The way each character changes throughout the course of the film is amazing. Like everyone thinks he's some beast, but inside he's a nice person who just wants to fit in. The character changes swing around a lot, along with their feeling toward each other.

One of the great parts about this movie is that it actually made you feel the emotion intended, unlike some other movies where it fails to actually effect your emotions. Edward Scissorhands can make you feel anger, happiness, and sadness towards the same emotions that Edward would go through.I don't think I have ever seen anything accomplish this as good as this movie has.

Overall it is a good movie. I would rather like to see more background story to Edward's life than it showed. But other than that it was quite good. If yet you haven't seen it, see it as soon as you can.

Insidious (I) (2010)
7/10
One of the Scariest Movies I Have Ever Seen
13 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Without a doubt, this is the scariest movie I have ever seen. It isn't a movie that only makes stuff jump at you, 'Insidious' combines sudden creatures jumping out at you with disturbing, creepy figures you can't even bare to look at. I personally can't remember the last horror movie that actually mad me scared, but this I will say is the first to succeed.

Plot is very good, when a kid goes into a coma and his soul gets trapped in another world where demons roam, and attempt to possess his body in order to escape to the real world to live again. It may not seem scary, but trust me, it was really, really horrifying. The way they looked, with their weird smiles and close up images of them make you jump and scream.

It was clear that 70's and 80's horror films inspired this movie. With high pitched violins to build up the scene where something really creepy happens. Some scenes were so scary I had to cover an eye. It was the way the creatures looked that did most of the scares. Some of the predictable scenes scared you because you knew something was going to happen, but didn't know what it was. A movie with high pitched violins, really loud noises, and lots of screams is a descent way to define it.

The movie starts off kind of slow, but progressively gets better and better as it goes on. There are a few shaky camera angles and some dark shots that tried to make it feel scary, but you can't seen anything. In the shots like this, they only last for a few seconds before changing to give you a better view of the scene.

Yeah it gets kind of stupid near the end and Darth Maul was in it (why, again?), but it was rather enjoyable. However, there isn't much to go back to and I don't have any desire to see it again. But for a single viewing, Insidious was well worth the watch.

Insidious gets a 7/10.

A Bloody Great Time!
6 April 2011
I watched the trailer to this movie and thought, WOW! This has to be an absolute gore feast, and yes, it was. This movie was awesome. It was fun, funny, and above all, gory. You are sure to have fun with this movie, if you want to have a good time with a movie, check it out. It is sure to be a lovable movie for all ages (and by that I mean mature-male audiences). I watched the unrated trailer and it pretty much sums up the movie. The plot is pretty much explained in the title, A Hobo With A Shotgun. I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack to this movie, it fit the time of emotion, from feeling sad, crazy action, lots of gore or even watching the hobo on a train in the opening credits. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the plot played out well throughout the movie.

To like this movie, you can't be offended by extreme violence, and lots of gore. May I also warn you that there are some disturbing scenes in this. It was a funny movie and plot-wise it was pretty odd. It wasn't all I expected, wondering how they could make a movie about a hobo running around clearing the streets of crime with his shotgun, to think about this you don't really think that much dialogue could be achieved, but they succeeded pretty well. It was very entertaining and good as an all-around movie. If you like action, thrillers, or just want to have a good time, see this movie and you will certainly get what you paid for. It shows a good feeling of hatred toward the bad guys, who you really hate. In some movies they try to make you feel like you don't like them, but this one did a good job at that. All-in-all it was good in it's own strange way unexplainable by words. Watch it, if you can get by the excessive violence, like having a good time or like action, go to the movies, or you can even wait for it's release on DVD, it will be a great movie either way.

Surprising for me, pretty good
18 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
My brother tried to convince me to go and see 'Paul' with him before I bought my ticket to this movie, I have to say that I won this one, I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie pretty good.

I was pretty bored and wanted to be entertained for a couple hours, and that's what I got. This is a film where if you want to have a good time with your friends, or just by yourself, go and see it. It's a perfect action film, in fact, one of the best I've seen in a while.

This movie had only a few flaws to it, a few very small flaws. The first thing that I found about this movie is that names are really hard to catch. They only show the name for a few seconds in text on the screen until it disappears, then never heard of again. So many names appear and are introduced so fast that you can't remember half (or any) of their names. A lot of the same shot is used, making it kind of annoying to see (just like Unstoppable). Another thing about the camera is that I can only think of a few times that the camera was steady (that is after the first 20 minutes of the film). There was great editing, great acting, and SPECTACULAR effects to make this movie what it is. Some of the dialogue near the end reminded me of Independence Day, but it's literally one sentence that sounded alike. The aliens are not your typical aliens. They look the same as you would expect, but the technology and the weapons they use is almost like humans, just a bit more advanced. You would understand as soon as you see it of how original the extraterrestrials are.

If there were less dialogue copy, annoying camera angles, and names that you can understand and remember, it may have reached an 8.5 or so/ It's an absolute nail-biter and a very entertaining film that is definitely worth the watch. If you are a fan of Science Fiction films and alien invasion, this is the movie for you
