Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
a classic
I adore this film I grew up watching this on the telly on a Saturday afternoon. Its a classic nostalgia film for me and 1 that I have introduced both of my children to having found & purchased it on DVD. Yes the special effects don't live up to todays computer wizardry but so what??? The children of the Hydras teeth still managed to scare my kids they ooze menace from their fixed grins. The work that went into the stop motion filming of all the monsters is phenomenal. As far as I'm concerned Ray Harryhausen is a genius. I'm not going to go into a critique of this film I'm no Barry Norman. Yes the acting is a little wooden but Todd Armstrong was one of my first crushes.and even by todays standards he's still a cutie... Watch this film snuggled up to a loved one on a grey day with a big bag of treats and simply enjoy it for what it is a good clean family film.
Queen's Park Story (1998)
magical
A short story viewed about 5 years ago on the Beeb.A boy falls in love with a girl in Queens Park London. To prove his worth/love he remains rooted to the spot for 24 hours.During this time he receives advice from various animals including an owl.Sounds strange? it is, but it is so beautifully shot and a magical story. I really wish it was available on video or at least shown on tv again, as my memory is a little fuzzy recalling 11 minutes from 5 years ago, I just remember feeling warm, satisfied and sedate after watching it.Still 10/10***
Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975)
Cult fantasy romp.
I was brought up on Doc Savage, and was petrified by the green death as a child but even then as now, I found it thoroughly entertaining.I have made countless friends and colleagues watch this film and have been most amused by the diversity of reactions, granted they mostly think I'm odd but there you are. "I don't know what it is about the Doc, but he always gets the girls" has to be the ultimate line when you look at his sad band of men. This film is a classic spoof on all the super hero genre, and was way before it's time,it is not to be taken seriously, move over Austin Powers. Ron Ely is a God.It is unfortunate that this film hasn't been released on DVD in the UK. I don't think it should be remade and bastardised, like I said it's a classic,it cannot be done without Ron.(like the Italian job without Mini's and Michael Caine). I give it 10/10.
