The Birth of a Nation (2016)

Worth watching

A powerful story inspired by true events. A winner of two Sundance awards. But the question is, is it entertaining? The film is well made and generally the acting is quite good. The film has atmosphere and is somewhat moving. However, the story is slow to get going and just sort of plods along to a very predictable ending. For production quality and direction we would give this movie an 8, for entertainment the most we would award is a 4. Will we watch it again, probably not.

The Dark Horse (2014)

Really Disappointed.

It took me a long time to find this movie. I was really excited when it arrived. It was nothing like I expected and it really disappointed me. I finished up switching it off half way through. I love chess and I loved the published story line. What I received was an ill thought out badly filmed amateur movie. It did not help that most of the dialogue was so badly recorded or spoken, not sure which, that you could not understand what was being said most of the time. If you are considering this movie, do not bother, our copy is going in the bin.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)

Worth watching.

A fast moving thriller that keeps you entertained. To be honest it is more a "Boys Film". The acting's pretty good, the story line is not bad and the action shots and stunts are intense. A typical "Spy Movie" with all the ingredients to keep you awake. This is the third time we have seen this movie and we will watch it again in the future.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

Watchable - Just!

Stupid story line, oh, it could have been so much better. Too much ape dialogue was in sign language, we even considered putting the subtitles on at one point. The SFX is impressive and makes the film watchable but by a thin margin. Technically and logically there is so much wrong with this movie to the point of being ridiculous. Based on the ending, we assume that will be the last Planet of the Apes movie. If this one was the best they can do then it will not be a bad thing. Will we be watching it again, highly unlikely.

Nowhere Boy (2009)

A real surprise.

We loved this movie. A real pleasure to watch. Before seeing this movie we had no idea about the background of any of the Beatles. This was educational as well as entertaining. As children of that era it brought back so many memories. Overall the acting was pretty good from all the characters and the production took us back to that time. We will be watching this movie over and over again.

Life (I) (2017)

If you love Sci Fi you will love this movie.

A clever story with an unexpected twist. With a "hint" of Alien but with that slight chance that this could actually happen. Well acted by all the characters . Great SFX, believable. We loved the "Alien", a psychotic sea creature again is just possible, lets face it who knows what is out there. We will be watching it again in the future.

The Space Between Us (I) (2017)

Good idea, well carried out.

Loved the story, nice to see something a bit different with a good twist which I must admit was fairly easy to predict. Really well acted and excellent direction. Will we watch it again, absolutely, great family entertainment.

This was the first musical we ever saw live, 30 odd years ago and it is still as good today as it was then. Brilliant story, fabulous music. The songs stir emotions and have not suffered by not being sung by the original cast. Really well acted. Serious entertainment. Select surround sound and turn it up loud, just incredible. Will we be watching it again? Absolutely.

Evita (1996)

Seriously disappointed.

The positives, Madonna at her best and the story line was fine. The two well known songs were worth listening too then everything goes down hill from there. We thought the direction and production was poor at best and the rest of the score in this musical was dreadful almost painful, really disappointed. Will we be watching it again?, not a chance, the DVD is destined for the bin.

Phoenix (II) (2014)

Mind numbing. A good cure for insomnia.

If you have trouble sleeping slip this one in the DVD player, Slow to the point of being dam near static. The acting was generally awful and the story line ridiculous. Avoid at all cost. We will not be watching it again in the future.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Great fantasy movie

Great family entertainment with great SFX. Cannot understand why some people dislike the movie. My one criticism is the close cut haircuts on some of the characters not exactly congruent with the period or culture. Outside of that, sit back and enjoy. We have watched the movie three times to date and will watch it again in the future.

Sixty Six (2006)

Moving, funny, different, entertaining.

Add this one to your movie collection, it´s well worth watching. Hard to believe that the story is actually "loosely" based on true events. Much of the success of this movie is down to the brilliant acting from the main characters. This one touches all the emotions. Will we be watching it again, absolutely.

Basic Instinct 2 (2006)

Cannot understand why so many people slate this movie. Sure it´s not as good as the original but as a thriller it´s pretty good. Generally a good story with lots of twists and turns and the acting is fine. We have watched it four times to date and we will watch it again in the future.

The White Queen (2013)

It started really well and we had great hope for this series, however as it went on and on and on it just became very "samey", slow and tedious. Then by the third disc it became so complicated and difficult to follow that we gave up. We are both period drama fans so believe me it had to be pretty bad for us to "chuck it in". We saw one review that compared this series with The Game of Thrones, are they mad, the two series are not in the same realm. Would we watch it again? only under anaesthetic.

Many critics and reviewers "slate" this movie, why I do not know! It´s actually not that bad, yes it´s predictable and some of the acting leaves a bit to be desired and the story line is weak but I have seen much worse score much higher than this movie. So forgetting that this is "the dream movie " for Madonna fans, the movie is entertaining and unless you spot the obvious, it keeps you guessing. Now add the sex scenes with Madonna and it turns and ordinary movie into something a bit more special, puts Sharon Stone into the shade. Would we watch it again, absolutely.

Just brilliant, a must watch movie. A true story that waited a long time to be told. Moving, funny, telling and entertaining. Cannot really fault this movie in any way. Good story, well acted and brilliant production. A movie that will make you laugh and make you cry. Will we be watching it again? Most definitely.

The whole movie is ridiculous. If you know anything about survival in extreme conditions you will know what I mean. As this movie was such a disaster I doubt you will be making another one but if you do make sure you hire a survival expert that actually knows what he / she is talking about. Apart from that, the movie is as gripping as watching grass grow on the tundra. We will not be watching this one again in the future.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)

Love SFX, love this movie - but!

Typical Star Wars story which is "OK". As expected, brilliant SFX and lots of action. I don't know quite why but it's not quite as good as some of the others. Some of the acting was not really up to scratch and the attempt at comedy just did not work. Re the story line, I know it's a long time between movies but the story did not quite seem to be a logical follow on, however we did enjoy it and will watch it again in the future.

Dolores Claiborne (1995)

Unless you need to be depressed, do not bother with this movie.

Slow, predictable, depressing and miserable. Add to that the "obvious" acting by Jennifer Jason Leigh, her ineptitude heightened by the brilliant acting of Kathy Bates. Will we be watching it again in the future, highly unlikely.

Wonder (I) (2017)

Heart rendering, a must watch movie.

Brilliant movie. The story line is moving, the acting brilliant and the result is phenomenal. This is one you have to add to your movie library. Will we watch it again? without a doubt. Why a nine rather than a ten, the story does get a bit "samey" for part of the movie, is that a crime, maybe not but that is our feeling, but do watch this movie.

Independence Day (1996)

A Sci Fi Classic

A must watch movie if you love Sci Fi. Great story, brilliant SFX, well acted, fast moving, some action. What more do I need to say. Will we watch it again in the future, absolutely even though we have watched it three times already.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

One of the better ones.

Another great movie from the Star Trek stable, one of the better ones we think. Great story line, well acted and phenomenal SFX. Sit back, turn the lights down, turn up the surround sound and enjoy. Would we watch it again? absolutely, probably many times.

Brake (I) (2012)

The production of this movie is not bad, we have certainly seen worse. Where this movie fails badly is in the story line. 10 minutes into the movie and you can predict exactly what is going to happen. It´s been done before, many times and much better. To be fair, it is watchable, just, lets say that if you are on a long flight across the world and this is the only movie available to watch then go for it but otherwise, this is one for the bin. Will we be watching it again in the future, highly unlikely.

The Good Wife (2009–2016)

Good to keep in reserve.

Based on Series 1 we gave it a 7, just ordered Series 2 and will update the review accordingly. This is one of those box sets you can keep in reserve for those times when you have nothing new to watch. Each episode is it´s own mini story with an underlying story threaded through the overall story. To be fair, some episodes are better than others, however they are all watchable. There is nothing stunning about this series, nothing that will excite you or keep you on the edge of your seat or move your emotions. We await Series 2.
