The Elder One (2019)
5/10
A meandering story lifted by the performances!!
8 September 2020
So its a story that meanders from one edge to another yet can't seem to find its true soul. I was confused if it was a quest for lost family ties or a search for meaning of one's own existence or just a picturisation of all that goes on in deep dungeons of slums of Mumbai. From sleepy shores of Lakshadweep to filth ridden streets of kamathipura the environs are nicely shot and lend believability to the plot. But in between its difficult to understand the premise that director wants to focus on. Nivin Pauly is superb and so is Shashank who supersedes Pauly at times. Rest of the cast is also good. It keeps you interested almost till the end as you root for the kid to find the "Elder" but eventually it does become predictable as to what would be the end of it all. Is it Missable.. Possibly unless you want to rave on the acting skills of the protagonist and the side kick!! 5 Stars are for them!!

An Engaging Crime Mystery!!
5 September 2020
Great movie!! The plot, the screenplay, the performances, direction all are top notch! The protagonist doesn't give all the desired expressions but the story more than makes up for it. A letdown is the antagonist who looks more of a caricature than a scheming goon!! But the movie keeps you engaged till the last frame! Worth a watch definitely!!

An awesome Crime-Comedy Combine (C3)...!!! Must watch!!
2 September 2020
A light hearted crime comedy which keeps you hooked all throughout!! Most powerful aspect is the screenplay!! Great job done by all the actors!! But It's a movie where all the accolades have to go to the director!! It's an awesome comedy flick with its heart in the right place having so many life messages interspersed all over!! Not once does it let you down!! "NOTHING IS FISHY!!!" For Me an ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH!!

Pleasantly surprised. Got Hooked to it.

The series is really entertaining. The cases running along are not great investigative watch but the plot which runs simultaneously keeps you hooked. Victoria and Sokolovsky Jr. are really great and the interaction of the characters is wholly believable. Even the predictable bits are entertaining enough to keep you interested for more. All the other characters have played their part really well. Special mention for the cinematography too. An intriguing and entertaining series. Would love to watch similar dramas from Russia.Worth the binge!!

Its A Chef-d'oeuvre!!!!!! DO NOT MISS!!!!
15 July 2020
I must admit I am blown away by this piece of Art!! Story..Direction..Acting!! For me Thala Sethupathy's best work to date!! Yet the one shining even Higher is the innocence of Raas Kutty!! The way the whole web of interconnected stories has been woven is a Masterclass!! Everyone has done a tremendous job be it those who are experts like Fahadh Faasil, Ramya, Bagawathi or even the school friends... But I tip my hat to Mr. Thiagarajan Kumararaja... This was an Oscar worthy movie and its sad that our jurors can't see beyond Bollywood.... And I say this as a person who does not know Tamil and need subtitles to watch.. Yet Great Cinema needs no barriers of language!!! Nobody should miss this movie!!! as I stated in the title it is a masterpiece!!

A superb satire with lots of fun!!

To give you the gist the actual star of the movie is the story and screenplay. So kudos to the director for how he has managed to weave a great flick. It is not a one-man show but a lovely amalgamation of all actors doing a commendable job. Howsoever small the character it has been played to near perfection. Thala Sethupathy is awesome but so are the rest of the gang!! The twists and turns keep you engrossed right till the end. Absolute must watch!!

A soul stirring ode to a family's strength in crisis!!! Absolute Must Watch!
23 June 2020
It may not be a 10/10 on the execution (Still a solid 9 for me) but the heartwarming story of a family's strength to cope in an unprecedented crisis makes a it a joy to watch! A lovely story with its heart at the right place. Vinay Sir and Tillotama Shome shine through with flawless performances. Bisha as the daughter is wonderful and Vedant (CHINTU) is super likeable. It is a wholesome act which will warm your hearts to the core.

Hats off to the makers!! special bow for Dhanush and Manju Warrier!!
19 May 2020
In simple terms it would look like the premise is a bloody land conflict turning into a fight for honour of two families. But in reality it portrays the fight between the well to do and those who are trampled. And how the powerful can mould all circumstances to their benefit. Yet when it comes to one's family a real man can go to any lengths to suffer and sacrifice so that all is not lost. Brilliant script, great direction and superb cinematography. Dhanush at his imperial best. From being a violent rowdy to a sacrificing father, a responsible husband to an angry father boiling with rage to protect his son. Just awesome! Special mention for Manju Warrier for superb portrayal of a wronged mother who still worries for the rest of her family. Name reflects how a changed man can turn back into a devilish force when wronged while protecting his own kin!!! A must watch!!

A masterpiece in its own right!!
11 May 2020
This movie is all about the tribulations faced by the detectives once there is a serial killer on the prowl. The chaos that ensues and the fear psychosis which grips the community can only be assuaged once the killer is caught. And this can sometime lead to botched up investigations and over zealous attitude and brutal methods being adopted. The "Good Cop Bad Cop" routines, Confessions being forced all leading to it becoming a sham. The way the story is built up and details of the murders.. the surroundings....the rain...the "Sad Letter" song... the method of brutal rapes and murders... all instill a sense of fear for the personality of the murderer. He does not use any sophisticated weapons.... rather the victim's possessions only to do his job but carefully selects them. And our detectives hard pressed to find him go overboard many times but he just keeps giving them the slip... and even when they think they have him there aint enough evidence... the frustration and despondency even forces a do right cop to flip into a violent one. For me the concluding scene is the best where Sang Kang Ho sits near the scene of first crime and contemplates what could have been... Yes.. a few scenes could have been done away with but they are like invisible blips on the canvas... Superb!!!

A MASTERPIECE!!!
5 May 2020
Yes it may not be a comfortable watch for all but the ones who can tolerate gore and blood this revenge thriller is a MASTERPIECE!! It sends chills to your spine!! The Violence can be unnerving at times but there is nothing done for fun!! It just shows what a psycho serial killer usually does and how when the victim becomes the aggressor the line between right and wrong tends to fade.

The premise of the movie of revenge and how a person transforms into the monster himself and stoops to the level of the criminal to inflict the same pain and instill fear in his mind before killing him hits you really hard. Choi has delivered a performance that I haven't seen till now. His personification of the serial killer is frightening. He turns from composed to insanely violent in one instance and makes you cringe in your seat. Lee expresses his anguish mostly through the sorrow in his eyes.

No Hollywood or any other movie in my mind comes even close to this.

A MUST WATCH (again reiterating if you can tolerate some gore and blood)!!!

Hard hitting film! Close to a cinematic masterpiece!!
4 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Four stories.. four characters....four facets of our society!! Afia: Nothing much in this as it just delves into the changing face of our society where an independent woman does not need someone else to alter her choices! although still it probably did not need justification in the form of a failed marriage. Nandita Das is the only one to write home about but as that is the protagonist so that is her usual stupendous work. For me the best scene is when she takes out the paper with number scribbled over, tears it and throws it away. Megha: This comes a close second if we treat the movie as the four parts director has divided them into. Juhi and Manisha are just superb!! The childhood friendship torn apart by all the events that took place in Kashmir. Its like no one is responsible for it and yet everyone is. Makes me think about one of my childhood friends who herself was the victim of the same. Her write-ups in fb still haunt me. Excellently acted and makes you ponder about all that is KASHMIR. Abhimanyu: The best of the lot and yet the most uncomfortable truth to accept. We may have lots of statistics to show it happens yet in our "MORAL" society how can we accept that. Sanjay Suri's acting is the highlight of this whole movie. The turmoil within has been excellently portrayed by him. Omar: I feel its wrongly titled. The protagonist is actually Jay. May be to make it more catchy I guess. It shows how being Gay had its "Repercussions" in our "Society" which is taken advantage of and how it affects Jay. But this one is the weakest link of them all. Rahul Bose as Jay is OK but not his usual great self. Rather the best in this one is Abhimanyu Singh as the crooked inspector. All in all a definite watch. A mirror of our ever-changing society which raises quite a lot of questions.
