American Beauty (1999)
Truly an American beauty!
AMERICAN BEAUTY is one of the greatest films I've ever seen, and also one of my favorites.
This is the story of Lester Burnham (Spacey), who is feeling 'dead already'; Carolyn Burnham (Bening), Lester's power-hungry Real Estate worker wife; and Jane Burnham (Birch), their rebellious & insecure daughter, who spends her time with her best friend Angela (Suvari) and the mysterious kid-next-door, Ricky Fitts (Bentley). When Lester meets Angela, he develops a sudden lust for her, and decides to change himself, and he turns his life around - but turns everyone else's down in the process.
AMERICAN BEAUTY is truly an American beauty. This film is simply magnificent, and something about still dazzles me. The music (by Thomas Newman) is perfect, the cast and writing is flawless, and all the elements fit perfectly together to create this film.
This film is simply spectacular. You must see this film. ********8.4
M*A*S*H: Goodbye, Farewell and Amen (1983)
A wonderful ending for the greatest TV show of all time.
I recently purchased the very rare GOODBYE, FAREWELL AND AMEN on video, and I must say it was great. While some critics say GF&A is a hug exchange...they're halfway right. There are, unfortunately, a few too many hugs, but otherwise, this is great. The show went from comedy to drama, and here is a dramatic but fun ending. M*A*S*H fans won't be able to watch this without shedding at least 1 tear (I mean, Hawkeye's gone crazy!). It's a great show, a recommended viewer. A wonderful ending for the greatest TV show of all time. *******7.9
The Operative: No One Lives Forever (2000)
Perhaps the greatest PC game ever!
THE OPERATIVE: NO ONE LIVES FOREVER has forever defined PC gaming! NOLF is the story of newly recruited UNITY agent Cate Archer. As Archer, you must find out what the evil organization HARM is up to - shooting, exploding, talking and running your way through things. Meet with a whole cast of characters, from the most evil to the most hilarious.
This is a hilarious action-comedy which has forever defined PC game...perhaps the greatest PC game ever! The graphics are stunning, and I've never seen a game like this. I can't wait for the upcoming sequel... ********8.4 [VIDEO GAME RATING]
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)
Hilarious, wacky and weird...much better than the first!
The Gremlins are back in 1990's GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH! Billy Peltzer (Galligan) and Kate Beringer (Cates) are back at work at a medial mogul's "building of the future" in New York City. When Gizmo's owner (Keye Luke) dies, he is found by a scientist and taken to a lab, where Billy steals him and brings him to his desk. While a janitor is fixing a water fountain, Gizmo gets wet, and the Gremlins return, more hilarious than ever! Loose in NYC and dancing, ruining television shows, mocking John Wayne, and doing Frank Sinatra's musical numbers, the Gremlins go more crazy than ever. A great comedy, hilarious, wacky and weird. Much better than the first! ****** 6.3
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Great thriller!
Based on Tom Clancy's first novel (an instant best-seller), THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is a great thriller that manages to hold out 'til the end.
Capt. Marko Ramius (portrayed greatly by Connery) is the Russians' greatest captain, and has just been given command of The Red October, Russia's newest submarine. But now the Russian's have lost The Red October, and they believe that Ramius is going to start a war. But CIA analyst Jack Ryan (a great performance by Baldwin) has a different theory. Ryan believes that Ramius is planning to defect to the United States, and with the help of his commander (played by the great James Earl Jones) sets out to prove his theory is right. Sam Neill co-stars as Ramius' second-in-command. While long at times, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER holds out 'til the end. An un-missable thriller. * * * * * * * * 8.0
Working Girl (1988)
Effective, very entertaining comedy/romance
I recently saw WORKING GIRL on AMC. It looked like just another big-name star romance, but, to my surprise, was a great film! Tess McGill (played very well by Melanie Griffith) has just returned home to find her boyfriend (Alec Baldwin) in bed with another woman. Angry, she finds a new job and joins a company led by Sigourney Weaver. Weaver steals her idea to make a big company a radio station rather than television, and McGill pretends to take her boss's job while Weaver breaks her leg.
The best parts are Carly Simon's theme "Let the River Run", and Harrison Ford's hilarious performance as a business playboy. A great comedy/romance, entertaining 'til the last. * * * * * * 7.1
