Arnold (2023)
A good documentary
The short documentary was a very interesting watch as you get to know the amazing and interesting life of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
From the perspective of someone that was kinda familiar with his life I still learned a lot of new things about him and it is great to see how much one can accomplish if your willpower is strong enough.
I also believe a great thing that we saw through the documentary were Arnolds failures and mistakes he made in both his professional and personal life as this makes him a lot more human.
This with the combination with his very interesting life make a great documentary for anyone no matter if you are a fan of Arnolds or not.
Barbie (2023)
Amazing and fun
I got into the theater with zero expectations, and I can only say I was very positively surprised.
I loved the comedy in this movie as I think I haven't had that much fun in a while. And the other thing I love about this is that because the movie is a goofy comedy, you don't have to take the everything too seriously and you just go with it, and you enjoy the comedic ride all the way through the movie.
On the other hand, the movie also provides a lot of criticism towards the many flaws in our society and all through the movie you find things, that reflect that, and I believe they are portrayed perfectly.
Without spoiling to much I would recommend the movie to anyone as on the one hand I think it produces a lot of important messages and on the other I can't think of anyone who wouldn't enjoy the comedic experience.
Tetris (2023)
Nothing special
Honestly I was expecting a bit more. While the story about Tetris is interesting and it is really fun to visit some of the early days of video games development I can't shake the feeling that the movie isn't much more than anti communist propaganda.
This doesn't mean that I completely disagree with the way how communism was presented in the movie, as a I believe a lot of things shown are true, I just think there is a lot more to be desired.
Also everything about communism is portrayed very simplistically and you get a feeling that the target audience are people who can't take a critical perspective on anything and just want some good old fashioned commie bashing.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Another
As someone who grew with the first Marvel movies it's pretty sad to watch another after another mediocre movie and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is no exception to this.
The movie started okay and it was very touching remembering Chadwick Boseman, but apart from that there have been a lot of things that bothered me.
The main thing would be that we got no explanation why the Talokan people are so advanced that they could potentially beat the whole world (and Wakanda) in a war. I believe that this doesn't make sense as there is a reason why human life and civilisation evolved on land and not underwater. The reason being that land is a lot friendlier and there is no way humans could develop this the kind of technology, if they lived under water as the harvesting of different materials and just doing everything so deep under the sea should be very difficult (even if you have vibranium). And with that the whole plot falls into water (no pun intended).
Also it seemed funny (and unbelievable) to me that the Wakandan people never though of eating something infused with vibranium (if you exclude the Black Panther ritual) as this is the thing that gave the Talokan people their abilities.
And not to mention how absurd it is that Namor is the only one with special powers, because his mother was pregnant at the time of the first ritual as there is for sure no way that anyone else would find himself in a similar situation over all the years.
The Father (2020)
A very difficult, but rewarding watch
This movies is a very interesting, but also a very hard watch, as it is shown from the perspective of an old man having dementia, which you also get to experience as the viewer.
This way of the perspective the movie takes makes us as viewers feel the same things the main character feels. The emotions and experiences are shown very strongly which I believe reflects in us as the viewers as the movie makes you feel a lot of strong emotions, which you regularly don't feel.
The amazing acting from sir Anthony Hopkins only compliments that, as he portrays the main character and his experiences amazingly.
I can't really say anything bad about the movie, as I don't believe it has any big flaws.
The only things I would mention are, that you have to be prepared to watch the movie emotionally. This and the reason, that the genre of the movies isn't one of my favourites is the main reason why I didn't give it a higher rating.
Wednesday (2022)
As a first time Tim Burton watcher I'm not very impressed
As this was my first experience with watching one of Tim Burtons products I had no expectations about it whatsoever.
And after watching it I can't say that I am really impressed. I believe if you are into spooky things this can be an enjoyable watch, but given, that I don't consider myself as a big fan of this genre the series didn't make too big of an impression on me. I also believe that the main target audience for this series are early teenagers as the setting of the series is very stereotypically that of an teenage series.
Another thing I would like to point out, that bothered me was, that the plot twist was very obvious, as you could very early figure out, who is the odd person, that could be behind all of this. And the last thing is that the way some situations played out was very unbelievable as the possibilities of them turning out like that should have been ridiculously low.
But if all of these things don't bother you I believe this series would be a very interesting and fun watch for you.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
A magnificent visual experience
This movie is an almost must see in the cinema, as the visual experience of watching it in 3D is amazing.
Not only that, the message it carries is also beautifully shown, through the way the Na'vi are connected to the world around them. This is basically a continuation of the message from the first movie, but I think in here it is shown even better in the form of the Tulkuns (Whales) and how the experience the world and how Avatars are connected with them. You get a very good feeling how cruel humans can be towards other living things and that we are prepared to do horrendous things in our self interest.
The reason why I didn't give this movie a higher grade was, because the plot was designed in the way, that a lot of very unlikely scenarios had to happen so that, things turned out the way they did. I also found that recycling the villain from the first movie is a little bit of a "cheap" move and that there were better "villains" we could have had. And the thing I found most annoying was that the Na'vi are too humanised in a way, that the behave and speak like humans living in a modern 21 first century city. Given, that their culture, physiology and the structure of personality should be completely different from humans, they should never behave that similar to humans.
The Witcher: Blood Origin: Of Mages, Malice, and Monstrous Mayhem (2022)
A solid ending to the series
The episode continues in the same style as the episodes before it, as it isn't a spectacular episode, but it also isn't all in all bad.
I really liked the twist, when we though that Scian would betray the rest of the company, but it turned out she did this so that they could infiltrate the city.
I was surprised by the transformation of Fjall and how he turned out. I find it also interesting, how after Fjall the people decided: let's to the same thing to children (but that is a little beside the point and I'm probably not considering some other factors).
All in all, the final was an okay episode and a solid conclusion to the series, despite having some weaker or even cringy moments (how things turned out for the new empress).
The Witcher: Blood Origin: Of Warriors, Wakes, and Wondrous Worlds (2022)
An okay episode
This episode was an okay watch, I liked that they introduced some more mages and more magic and it was interesting to see young Avallac'h.
But on the other hand, there isn't anything very new or exciting, as the episode mainly continues in the same theme as the first two. We also learn some new informations and get a few more detail into how some things in the Witcher universe work or where they originate from, but nothing happened, that "blew my mind" or that would very highly raise my opinion of the series.
A lot of things that happened were pretty obvious and nothing was a big shocker, but all in all it was still a pretty okay episode.
The Witcher: Blood Origin: Of Dreams, Defiance, and Desperate Deeds (2022)
An upgrade from the first episode
The second episode is better than the first, although there aren't a lot of big changes between them. The bad CGI from the first one isn't spotted here, but the questionable decisions the characters make is. The two main things, that bothered me is the fact, that Eredin is a gossiper, who can't keep himself from revealing secrets, that shake up and destabilize the entire kingdom just because he got laid. And the second thing is, that Balor is more concerned with two surviving clan warriors, than with the starving people, who could riot against the ruling council.
Despite all that, the episode isn't as bad and if also turn a blind eye to some cliché scenes you could say, that it is pretty solid.
The Witcher: Blood Origin: Of Ballads, Brawlers, and Bloodied Blades (2022)
The Good (and interesting charecters), the Bad (plot) and the Ugly (CGI)
The first episode has some good but also some very bad moments.
Firstly I would like to point out, that the actors portraying the main characters (Éile and Fjall) seem to be a very good casting decision, as they portray the classic and stereotypical "badass" warriors very good.
But there aren't very few positives from that point on, as the fight-scenes and the overall behaviour of all the characters in the episode is very questionable. Meaning that I don't believe people as a group (nations) and individuals (with their decisions and motives) would bahave like that in any way.
And lastly I would just like to point out the CGI of the monster that appears in the episode, which I believe is ridiculous and ruins the whole mood of the scene.
1899 (2022)
As much as I like getting teased for eight hours, it failed to deliver it's teasing
This show is a very interesting series in darkquesk style.
After the first few episodes it promised a lot and it opened a lot of different questions. But with each episode the amount of questions increased, while leavening most of the questions unanswered. It wasn't until very late in the series we got some answers, but they were pretty disappointing and the finale wasn't anything big as was the case in similar series, who were very confusing at first, but had a spectacular payoff because of it (e.g., Westworld, Dark).
Even though, the series is still interesting and a very positive and fascinating part of it is, that a lot of different characters speak in different languages. This adds a whole new dimension for the series and I think it is very good. Apart from that I can't point out a lot of other very strong positives, but I hope if the show get's a season two, that it will be an improvement to this one.
Marriage Story (2019)
Good acting, not soo good story
After I watched the movie I was disappointed, I was excepting much more especially after I heard all the praise about the movie.
Firstly, I would like to point out the positives. The acting from both main characters was really good and they nailed their roles. Another positive thing, which you could take as a joke is, that I learned how expensive a divorce is in America and how the judicial sistem works, so because of this the movie was also informative.
Apart from that I can't point out many more positive things. I found the story of the movie pretty boring. The decisions the characters took didn't make a lot of sense at times and given that this movie tries to be realistic this bothered me. For me the characters also weren't very interesting and their story wasn't anything special. I was expecting a tragical love story, but what I got was mostly an long court battle of two people who started disliking each other more and more, which in (just a little more) ration world wouldn't happen like this.
Tomb Raider: Becoming Lara Croft (2017)
A very good movie in its genre
The movie delivers it's expectations, it's story is interesting and it holds your attention until the very end, the main character doesn't have too strong of a plot Armor (of course she has a little bit of it, but not too an excess) and the ending (although you can expect it) still doesn't disappoint. The actress also portrays Lara Croft pretty good and I think, she suits the role really well.
Of course you also have some cliché scenes, the movie can be also a little unrealistic (of course you can expect this when watching a movie like this) and some decisions the characters make seem a little stupid, but none of this is taken too an extreme.
All in all if you want to watch an action adventure movie I would very much recommend this film as I think it's one of the better ones in its genre.
