Scream (2022)
The BEST Scream Sequel, Thrilling and Very Entertaining!
I'll admit, I'm a massive Scream fan, and the first will always be the best. No question. From best to worst, it's 1, 5, 3, 2, 4. Basically, all the twists got worse over time, and the spirit of the final girl went from fierce to more or less a flat caricature. But what I love most about 5CREAM is the filmmakers knows this, and it's not running in the opposite direction like the 4th did. It's taking us along for the ride.
The writers accomplish (in my opinion) as close to what the first film did. It walks the line between being clever and campy without going so overboard as to pander to longtime fans. As a longtime fan, this is saying something!
I could see how this film would make a lot of OG Scream fans angry. It embraces its old tropes while throwing some of them out the window, mirroring scenes from earlier films, but still managed to make it fresh! I've watch every sequel in spite of not being totally into them, but I can honestly say I was INTO THIS.
This is the first time since Scream 3 that the twist actually felt surprising since the original. It's like I saw it coming, but I didn't actually think they would go there? On second watch, it's more obvious, but that's the same way it was with the first and it's still truly satisfying.
I appreciate the filmmakers didn't go to heavy on the nostalgia. The second movie killed off arguably the best character in the franchise, which gutted me (lol), and the fifth installment similarly kills off a familiar face, but that didn't bother me nearly as much. The return of Billy was iconic, I don't care if people thought it was lame or forced, seeing his face again still made my heart skip a beat. I'm also not that upset about Neve returning to Scream 6. Sydney will forever be my #2 final girl behind Laurie Strode no matter what.
The Overnight (2022)
Surreal Dark Comedy with a Horror Twist, Misleading Trailer.
First off, it's not a terrifying demonic horror movie like the trailer makes it out to be. There's literally nothing in the trailer that indicates it's funny or goofy, but I found myself laughing quite a bit. Actually feel kind of bad for the people who are taking it too seriously. It's more like a satire, full of haunted hotel jokes and off-beat tropes. The guy from Frankenhooker is in it, for heaven's sake.
The Overnight starts pretty generic. An attractive couple going on a romantic trip in the mountains and wind up stranded at some old hotel. Cue the eye-rolls. From there, things start to get progressively weirder. It walks the line between poking fun while paying homage to movies like The Shining and Psycho, similar to the way Cabin in the Woods did to The Evil Dead and Friday the 13th.
The plot twist at the end legitimately thew me off. I won't give anything away, but kudos for not making it too serious and having some fun with the genre. I wouldn't exactly put this on the same shelf as Cabin in the Woods, but if you're in the mood for something a bit campy and spooky, I'd recommend giving it a watch.
It Follows (2014)
A Mysterious Modern Classic For Fans of Classic Horror
I love so much about this movie. Everything from the aesthetic to the score is stunning. There are things that bugged me, plot holes that I wish could have been filmed but I chalk that up to me being raised on franchises filled with backstories. I saw this film in theaters three times in 2015. Yes lol I know some people might find that excessive, sorry I loved it. I kept looking for clues, read some analysis online, but nothing convincing. It doesn't seem like the filmmakers have too much interest in making a sequel, and after all this time, I can't say that I have much interest in a sequel myself. It's perfect as it is.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Not the greatest Halloween movie, but not the worst...
Laurie Strode will always be my #1 final girl of all time, followed by Sydney Prescott (Scream) and Ginny (Friday the 13th part 2). So when the 2018 reboot came along, I was delighted to find that it was heavy on Laurie's story line, which quite literally "lost the plot" early on. I was so happy to have my girl back, plus Judy Greer?
I'll start off by saying the title of Halloween Kills certainly tells it like it is. There are a LOT of kills in this movie. Like, a *lot* to the point where I was feeling numb when big characters were getting killed. This was a lot darker than I expected, too, not as much comic relief as the 2018 reboot. Some of these kills were flat-out depressing. The death of the older couple with the flying drone made me sad. Although the Big John and Little John bit was cute, it broke my heart. The death of Lonnie's son was hard to watch. And don't even get me started on the fate of Judy Greer.
None of this is to say it's a bad film, because it is very well-done and delivers some solid scares and moments of humor. Beautiful cinematography, excellent acting, great special FX, and of course the music and sound design are simply fantastic. I would still recommend to any Halloween fan, even though it's not my favorite of the franchise. Looking forward to Halloween Ends, hoping for more thrills than kills!
Friday the 13th (1980)
One of my all-time favorites!!!
I watched this movie the first time in middle school and didn't like it. Not sure why other than it just seemed generic like a million other horror movies I'd seen. Looking back, I feel embarrassed, because I didn't realize this was the big kahuna to start it all. The second movie might be more entertaining in terms of shock value, but I can appreciate more now how much the first installment was truly revolutionary at the time!
Malignant (2021)
Terrific! A thrilling ride and refreshing spin on the genre
100x better than I could have ever imagined! As far as James Wan movies go, this has got to be my favorite. There is no profound social message here, it's more like a theme park ride. I would ride a Malignant rollercoaster at Six Flags if they made one. I almost turned this thing off after a few mins, it just didn't work for me at first. Luckily, EVERYTHING else did. Suddenly, the tone shifts and you're in a new world. This is nothing like any horror movie I've ever seen. Is it scary? Not exactly. But are there real, jaw-dropping moments that will make you squirm and hide behind your hands? Yes. Is it laugh out loud funny? Yes. Is it trying to be? Who cares! It's fantastic, and even better the second viewing.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
If I could give this 11 stars, I would!
High energy, funny, exhilarating to say the least. All the technical elements combine perfectly. I think I might prefer this to all the other blockbuster re-boots, and that includes SCREAM, which I adored. I don't want to give a single thing away. Trust me, it was worth the wait. I saw it in IMAX, it blew my mind and exceeded my expectations.
X (2022)
Too much gore for me, but a cool original concept
This was too grisly for my taste, but I enjoyed it. Don't think I would watch again because it was disturbing enough at parts that I just don't care to remember. Loved the 70's styling. Really funny at parts, too. Definitely recommend it to horror fans who can stomach it.
