Die Another Day (2002)
Far from the days of the old cold war
I am an admirer of the James Bond films. Sean Connery was a monument of masculine Englishman style. In the cold war days of sixties to tell about the agent stories was accepted as normal. But in the global era there is no Soviet Union which threatens democratic world. Dreams are different nowadays. The film producers think James Bond must survive in a different way. The cinema technology of the sixties is not comparable to our times. But human imagination is shallow in 2000's. I think James Bond should be preserved as an historical event as created by Ian Fleming. I don't want to mourn for a British Empire which doesn't exist.
Im Juli (2000)
Journey to the Middle East
In Europe it is possible to go to a far place in the new era. But there are many dangers for the one who does not know to live as a Gypsy. Theft, drugs abuse, smuggling and bribe are abundant in many countries. Dare to go by land... Turkish German director Fatih Akin tells us a fairy tale about our times in a very humanistic and humorous style. The film ends in an optimistic way. Is there a different way to talk about the bureaucracy of the former Eastern Block countries and Turkey in a more pleasant way? In a few words Im Juli is a good road film I think.
The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
Human rights and the religion sometimes conflicts
I congratulate the Irish producers for a very good film. Self criticism is a main virtue which makes human civilizations developed. If you bravely criticize yourself you deserve to join the democratic world. Under the pressure of religion billions of people are muted. Silence because of repression in the middle of Europe... Realistic films are nearly forgotten among the fantastic films. Why shall we escape from the truth? We must tell the truth to our people who think the best is in religious life. In many Islamic country women are accepted as the source of all the evil in sexual means. Because of this they are in danger of being accused in every moment. But fanatics from every religion thinks in the same manner. I hope Irish women aren't endangered by this type of human beings now.
Il derviscio (2001)
Sometimes life is too difficult to carry on
It is difficult even for a dervish who should think much about the meaning of life. In Ottoman Empire in the 19th century no human right was to be argued. It was possible for the ones who dare, who cheat or did intrigued. But in the real life we also have roles. We play a good character or a bad character. A good man can only play good man successfully. If one tries the opposite it is much more possible to be the loser. In dark tones and dark colours among dust film flows very slowly to one good man's bad fate. The film is very successfully cinematographed and screenplay is a very good adoption of the original book Dervish and the Death. Most of the Turkish actors are of theather origin and good at the mimics and gestures needed in close plan. You think and feel bad at the end of the film which mostly make a film of European origin successfull.
