Bates Motel: First You Dream, Then You Die (2013)
Every modern TV show I've ever seen
Hour-long "psychological" drama? Check. Unnecessary modern adaptation of a superior work? Check. Overdone mood lighting in every scene? Check. Teenagers interacting in ways that teenagers do not interact in? Check. Unpleasant and draining to watch? Double check.
They're all very similar, so if you are into any dramatic shows made in the last ten years or so you will probably enjoy this too. I lost interest before the end of this first episode, in which a young Norman Bates (a perfectly cast Freddie Highmore) moves to a new town following the mysterious death of his father. Naturally his mother Norma (Vera Farminga, who I usually enjoy watching) is right there with him. Together they open the soon-to-be-infamous Bates Motel and more bad things happen from there.
I gave it a shot, but it's not my cup of tea. I think I'll watch "Psycho" instead.
Black Rain (1989)
Mediocre action film
This film stars Michael Douglas as a NYC cop/motorcyle racer attempting to track down an escaped yakuza in the Osaka underworld, with reluctant assistance from Japanese authorities. It was made in an era when Japan was perceived as the greatest economic threat to the U. S. In other words, it hasn't aged well. The plot isn't believable, and the characters lack depth. At two hours in length the film overstays its welcome. I give it four out of ten for good cinematography and action sequences.
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Slightly more entertaining than a drill through the head
Hard to believe they were making slashers this bad only four years after 'Halloween' but here we are. This thing stumbles and crashes around the screen, piling up a lot of bodies but not a single scare. I guess it was supposed to be some sort of parody but the director didn't get the memo, so the terrible writing and suspense-free plot are played absolutely straight. There's some T&A in the beginning but nothing else of interest.
