Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spiral (2001)
"Call the Clerics!"
This episode significantly underwhelms (it sucks), especially within an otherwise compelling arc. It's baffling to see the Knights Templar depicted in a Dungeons & Dragons-esque setting, complete with horses, poorly crafted chainmail, and dangerously sharp weapons, all while inexplicably evading law enforcement interaction. This subplot is nonsensical to the point of frustration and detracts considerably from the series' quality, making one wonder about its inclusion at all. Additionally, the inexplicable discovery of the Winnebago raises further questions about logic and continuity within the storyline. This segment not only fails to add value but arguably should have been omitted from television history for its lack of coherence and contribution to the narrative.
Star Trek: Voyager: Time and Again (1995)
The science!
I'm totally new to Voyager, having not watched it when it aired and only really becoming a fan of Star Trek later in life, and I've been curious to get into it. It's interesting to see the ways in which they are trying to differentiate it from TNG and DS9, and maybe this will improve stuff time, but I'm struck by how into time travel and loops and "it was all a dream" storytelling the show already is. It's not bad stories or character moments, but floating time shards and the psychic helping to locate people in the past which is also the present starts to really lean away the things I enjoy about the Star Trek franchise and into the things I struggle with more.
Still, this was an enjoyable episode. And I assume that this show hits its stride in season 3, like all new Star Trek shows.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Meridian (1994)
The Worst
Okay so...
The B-plot is super funny and I love it. Also, this episode gets a great hat-tip in Lower Decks. That's why I gave it a two of ten. Because there's nothing else even remotely worth seeing here. Dax and her creepy lover are flat and uninteresting-just like the world, the premise, etc.-and the whole thing is stupid.
Honestly, I'm surprised that this even got to air. And Frakes is usually a pretty decent director, so you have to assume that this was a garbage in/garbage out situation. But honestly, I'm just stunned that in such an incredibly good show like DS9 that this ever was even approved.
But hey! That b-plot!
