Castlevania (2017– )

Atmospheric/story/setting basically perfect
26 October 2022
From start to finish this show rivals and surpasses even the best gothic horror imagery in any tv/movie/ video game in existence. The color pallet is what stood out to me the most. The characters are fleshed out and both the villains and heros are memorable. Also the action set pieces are top notch, all done with fantastic animation. The story also takes some twists and turns to keep things fresh. 4 seasons was just about perfect to wrap up the story but I still craved for more. If you are a fan of the video games or just a fan of gothic entertainment you will enjoy this. It is difficult to find fault with this series; probably the best show on Netflix.

So many secrets
7 October 2022
This game borders on being too much. Too many weapons, too many areas, too many items... too many secrets. But the reality is that is it all done to near perfection. Everything from the traversal to the settings to the lore; it's basically perfect. The one thing that stands out the most are the side quests. Just when I thought Ranni's quest was the best side quest ever created, I find myself totally captivated with Fia's quest. The other thing is that you can basically play however you want and it is all enjoyable: mage build, tank build etc. It is hard to imagine another video ever coming close to reaching the standard that this masterpiece has set. Just make sure to clear your calendar.

Practically flawless drama

Warning: Spoilers
Very minor spoiler. This show starts off with a dead body found in the woods. The thing that makes this show a 10/10 for me is the setup and how many different motives come into play. Not just regarding who may be the perpetrator but also who the victim could be. Brilliantly done.

Resident Evil Village (2021 Video Game)

Subtly subverts expectations
18 May 2021
Makes up for RE 7's shortfalls and keeps things entertaining throughout. Exploring is as exciting as combat. Searching each room/area is surprisingly awesome. The enemy variety is exceptional. Environment and atmosphere is near perfection. The list goes on. One minor issue is the Duke. Otherwise RE Village belongs in the games hall of fame as one of the greatest.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017 Video Game)

Held back by a few things
6 February 2021
Overall I enjoyed the game but there are 2 main sticking points that keep it from greatness:

-the long, hard slog to make it to the end of the game is sometimes brutally long winded

-the biggest flaw though is that the enemies are terrible. I'm not talking about the Baker family...but the alien/predator like enemies that appear. They could have been so much better.

There are some aspects of this game that are brilliant, but too often I kept saying to myself "can it please just get to the point and end."

Very Stephen Kingy

Thankfully it's very well made. If this film wasn't executed as well as it was, it could have been a dud. But the opposite happened. There were times when I thought the film might either get too complicated to understand or take a turn for the worst..it but never happened. Bravo

Cyberpunk 2077 (2020 Video Game)

Loving it. After tempered expectations
8 January 2021
Platform: ps5 Time played: 10 hours so far, no crashes so far Female character; Street kid life path.

I don't know if I lucked out and happened to pick good dialogue/action options, but my time with cyberpunk so far has been fantastic.

As widely reported, the game of course is not as polished as I would like, but overall the look and feel almost fit perfectly in the world it's trying to portray. An example is when you interact with npc's they often respond oddly or rudely or robotically (or glitchy); but in some backward logic kind of way it works because of the of the digitized atmosphere.

I also love the way my female character is in sync with Jackie wells; it's like he looks at her as a little sister (at least to me). I wonder if playing as a female has heightened my overall experience because of Jackie.

The choices the game gives you with dialogue and actions on how to complete missions are also interesting; should I cooperate with this person who appears to be my ally or turn on them and cooperate with their rival?

Maybe I am enjoying it more since expectations were tempered after ridiculous hype, but overall I am soaking up everything about this game and enjoying it.

Unpredictable

There are many reasons that this show is incredible: original, funny, thrilling, mysterious, unprecedented character development...but it's the unpredictability that takes the cake for me

Very creepy, sometimes funny, a little strange
28 December 2020
UPDATE from original review posted below: rating up from 7 to 9 after second viewing; a lot of things become more clearer and second viewing makes the film a lot better.

I love the originality of the plot but it does get a little too strange. The film is a mix of twilight zone and black mirror that did kept me entertained even with some missteps. I also couldn't take my eyes off Nyong'o, the film definitely wouldn't be as good without her. Overall a must see for fans of thriller/horror flicks simply because of how original it is.

Hitman (I) (2007)

Surprisingly good movie in general, great if fan of games
26 December 2020
I rated this movie a little higher than it probably deserves simply because I am a fan of everything hitman. But even if you aren't a fan of the games this is still a good and entertaining assassination/action flick with surprisingly good character development. The one aspect that sticks out are the environments and locales; the images and scenery are fantastic especially for hitman fans. Also the length of the film is perfect at about 90 minutes. This is not on the level of Bond flicks, but very entertaining and worth a watch if you are a fan of the movie genre and especially for fans of the games.

You'll never see it coming
12 December 2020
The first half of this film sets up the mind blowing second half perfectly. I usually can predict what type of twist or at least have a couple different general directions of where a plot twist might be headed; trust me on this, you'll never see it coming. My favorite films of all time include No Country for Old Men and The Departed; this is right up there with them and in some ways eclipses the rest. A must see.
