Best Show on Prime

Best show on Amazon Prime! So dark, so funny, so different. Well written and so human...or as human as superheroes can get :)

Black Mirror 2.0
23 October 2020
Upload took the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" and gave it a PG rating with a romantic comedy twist. At first, I thought that the filming style reminded me of a Hallmark movie, but the characters are so likeable, and the concept so imaginative, that the whole show grows on you quickly. By the end of episode 1, I was hooked. Watched the whole season in three days.

Flip or Flop (2013–2022)

Realistic Flips, Likable Characters
11 June 2014
The best things about Tarek and Christina are that they are level-headed and realistic. You don't see them blowing up at their contractors, or overspending on their flips. They spend realistic amounts of money on their properties and renovations, and they encounter realistic problems. Unlike other shows, like Flipping Vegas, problems don't seem staged. And I love the fact that the show is only 30 minutes; one hour can be overkill for these types of shows. Other reviewers have said that the characters are "bland" but I disagree. I would rather that they be themselves rather than over-act for the camera. And I don't mind Christina's SoCal accent; she's nice to look at and she has a good head on her shoulders. Over all, Flip or Flop is an entertaining and efficient home renovation show.

Frasier (1993–2004)
10/10
Best Written Comedy of All Time
22 October 2013
Frasier's writers and actors proved that a show can be written intelligently, even too intelligently, and still come off hilariously witty and relatable. Frasier, along with Seinfeld and The Golden Girls is one of the best written comedies of all time. Although not present initially, it only took a few episodes for the chemistry between smarty-pants Frasier (Kelsey Grammar) and his on-screen brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) to develop. What ensued was some of the nerdiest and funniest high-brow dialogue ever performed. Combine that with the painfully delayed romance of Niles and Daphne (Jane Leeves), and you get great entertainment.

Keep Waiting for the Good Part
20 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I rented the bluray edition of this movie which meant that I had to sit through over three hours of a plot that kept jumping from present to past and from boring character to boring character. For a non-comic-book-reader like myself, I could have used more character background--I was totally lost, and as a result, uninterested. I kept waiting for the good part to happen because the previews were great. I thought I was getting to that good part (about two hours into the movie), but it was short lived. How is it that you cast someone as gorgeous as Carla Gugino but you put her in old person's makeup for most of the movie? I don't know how anybody could give this movie a 9/10 or a 10/10 rating. I reserve those ratings for movies like Million Dollar Baby or Schindler's list. This movie was nowhere near the level of other comic book films like Spiderman, Batman, or even the original Superman.

The Ex (2006)

I Hate Chip Sanders
5 November 2007
Jason Bateman shined in this average comedy featuring Zach Braff and Amanda Peet. Despite being in a wheelchair for the entire movie, Jason Bateman does a fantastic job making the audience despise his character Chip Sanders. Tom Reilly (Braff) moves back to his wife's home town to take a job working with his father-in-law. Despite his nice-guy efforts, co-worker Chip just won't let Tom feel like he's doing anything right. When we discover that Chip is actually Tom's wife's ex, Bateman's performance had me wishing that Zach Braff would strangle Chip in a fit of rage.

Zach Braff plays the likable main character who, just when you start to cheer for him, finds some idiotic way to disappoint you. I expected a little more from Amanda Peet after her hysterical performance in The Whole Nine Yards, but she performed solidly.

Jason Bateman proves in this flick just why he received so much critical acclaim for Arrested Development.

Jesse Spano's Boobs Can't Save This Fiasco
21 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
At a touching moment in this pile-of-horse-crap of a movie, Robert Davi attempts to congratulate Elizabeth Berkley's ascent from stripper to showgirl: "It must be weird, not having anybody cum on you." Granted, that was the most hysterical line in the movie, but it shows you just how trashy and terrible this movie was. I haven't seen this movie in 11 years--not since I was a horny college student trying to get a look at Jesse Spano's boobs--but I did learn my lesson: few sets of boobs on a movie screen are worth spending the $3.50 I could have spent on a McDonald's value meal. Isn't that amazing? Just 11 years ago, $3.50 got you into a movie.

Very Angry at AngLee
21 April 2006
This movie was long and it sucked. I did like Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but then again Zizi Zhang could just stand in front of the screen and I'd watch the movie. D- (That's my grade, not a smiley face.)

Now, in order to fulfill IMDb.com's minimum of ten lines for this commentary, I will continue to write lines of words. Hopefully, after a few sentences, I will have written enough to be able to published on this website because, just as in blogs, people want to feel important by having their material published. I am no different in that I like to feel important, too. There, I think that I'm at ten lines already...right...now.

I Wonder if Everything About Peter Jackson is Long...Winded
21 April 2006
This movie had some of the best computer animation I have ever seen. The fight scenes between King Kong and the other animals were absolutely incredible--the best I've seen since Jurassic Park. With that said, does Peter Jackson own an editing machine? ONE HUNDRED, EIGHTY EIGHT MINUTES. By the way, Peter, I thought that Lord of the Rings was way too long, too. The part of the movie on the lost island was great, but everything else was classic Peter Jackson: long and long-winded. Why do movie makers nowadays feel the need to extend movies past two hours? Ang Lee should have taken that same advice for Hulk.

Bettany Thrives and Kirsten Dives
11 October 2004
Wimbledon certainly doesn't offer anything new as far as romance comedies go, but it does shine under the talent of its main character, Peter Colt (Paul Bettany). Bettany brings a charm and likability that I expected to get from Kirsten Dunst in this film. Instead, I was pleasantly entertained by this wonderful actor. Dunst, on the other hand, seemed unnaturally childish in her role as Lizzie.

Tennis rarely makes its way into the field of sports movie genres, but it seemed like the perfect sport to serve as a backdrop for this cute comedy. Rescued by the talent and magnetism of Bettany, Wimbledon reminds us that Hugh Grant isn't the only British actor who Americans should watch.

A Knight's Fail
20 May 2001
Why is Queen's "We Will Rock You" playing in the background of a medieval joust? What blacksmiths use the Nike swoosh as their trademark? If you can tolerate things that just don't seem to fit in this movie about jousting knights, then you may not walk out of this movie like my sister did. The strongest aspects of a Knight's Tale, starring Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon, are witnessing the first-hand excitement of a medieval jousting competition and the attractiveness of its actors.

The film likens jousting to a modern-day contact sport. Athletes tour old Europe to compete in front of dedicated fans, and play with severe injuries just like today's NFL superstars. The joust is by far this movie's greatest attribute, but the extreme cheesiness and juxtaposed soundtrack prevent me from giving this movie any more than a B-.
