Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Tormented guilt
First of all I must say that I don't write reviews often. I respect Martin Scorcese highly, so it is hard for me to write the following, but nonetheless has to be said. This film is 2 hours too long and it's fantastically boring. In fact, during the many sessions (took over a week) needed to finish the film (I cannot fathom anyone sitting through its entirety in cinema - and this from a person who saw Dune 2 twice), the same thought kept coming back: Why did he do it? My interpretation is that it was the result of white mans guilt; a burning desire to enlighten and to deliver cinematic justice to the Native Americans, who suffered so much but in the end really only ending up tormenting the audience. Many are the times, that uneven films have been saved in editing, but here it seems that everyone involved must have been pressed to not question the man and just deliver - over the top. There is so much that isn't up to the usual standards and it is simply not possible that postproduction and producers could have thought it was a great film. I pray that Marty comes to his senses and realise what he has done. I also hope that he can separate his guilt tormenting him from the film making process. And I'm also very sorry to even write this review..
Scores 6 and not 5, because Leo and Bob are still fantastic despite everything.
Peace.
Employee of the Month (2004)
One of the worst films I've not enjoyed even one bit.
While the story is simple and has a good list of renowned actors, it lacks so many qualities to make it somehow enjoyable not the least watchable. While it starts of OK it soon turns out to be severely disjointed and with little substance whenever those moments do arise, which is mostly thanks to Steve Zahns edgy character. His character seems interesting but over the top, putting it mildly, during the entire film, until you slowly discover ALL characters are actually full on psychopaths. I am fully convinced this film is the result of directors crack abuse. The few interesting moments that appeared, were always followed by appalling behaviour or unmotivated violence. No explanation, no logic. I'm actually upset this film ever got cleared for production. If you absolutely have to see this crackhead fantasy of film, you can fast forward thru it and won't miss a thing. The ending is the perfect anticlimax to this utterly despicable film.
Stillwater (2021)
Great but .. Disappointing
First and foremost it has to be said this was one of the weakest endings I've ever seen in a film. It completely pissed away everything that had been built up during the entirety of the film. Such is it, that I think it will probably plague the director for the rest of his life that he didn't spend 15 more minutes to come up with something better.. Actually this review only turned out to about the ending. And I will end it right here.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Not as good as I hoped it would be
Good subject, but becomes overly on the nose and establishes no sense of rhythm throughout the entire movie - partly because it's hard to feel much sympathy for a protagonist, who seems to be both tired of life and a full blown psycho. Another film too hyped up for its own good. I'm sorry it does not matter one bit that it was a directorial debut. Case closed.
Kajillionaire (2020)
This film is a litmus test for state of our world
There is no nice way to say this; the world is full of idiots that won't get this film (nor any of the great works of art for that matter).
I'm not going to discuss the film other than to say I was surprised by low ratings and glad reviews didn't deter me from seeing this quirky poetic masterpiece, I have not seen anything like it since Charlie Kaufmans glory days (Eternal Sunshine, Adaptation etc). While those are clever little creations of quirk as well, they also work on many different (intelligence) levels, this one however, craves your full attention for the entire time, every scene, line and expression tweaks the story to our and characters continuous surprise. I get some of the criticism, the narrative loses its edge towards the end, but you have to see it for what it is, a declaration of love to the universe, the people in it and snack bags that go pop. I definitely hope to see more from Miranda July and hope she will continue to ace herself both in life and on the big screen. Thank you!
First Man (2018)
Amazingly
Boring..! How on earth do you manage to make a feature film less engaging than a documentary? No one expects Ryan Gosling to spring out of his range of 1.5 emotions, but thru the film it seems they focus too much on getting details right and totally forgot they were making a film that needs to be watchable. At least someone should ve told the director to cut out an hour or so to regain some pace. Watch it for good recreations of flight in space shuttles and moon landing.
Bacurau (2019)
One of those films that could ve been great..
.. but totally lost its edge half way thru
I'm not going to spend many lines dissecting this film. In short without spoilers: Promising buildup turned lukewarm social justice zombie splatter with predictable ending. I feel cheated
Hence the score 5/10 reflects the average of the first and second part together.
