Priest (2011)
Not to be overlooked!
I watched this movie many times now, and why? It is just a fast-pace movie, with a lot of Kung-Fu style action sequences, and the weapons are quite imaginative. The CGI effects are engaging. The story itself is convincing enough and it stays in the background, which is perhaps the best part of making this film works. We all have seen many, many vampire film, so blood sucking, body dismembering, blood gushing are all expected fanfare that is par for the course. The Hive concept is kind of new, and set as a bet to warrant a sequel, but it never happens, unfortunately. Paul Bettany could have curved himself a niche as a superhero with a religious twist, like his role as a fallen archangel Michael in Legion (2010), but he becomes a Marvel superhero instead. Maggie Q and Karl Urban are icing on Bettany's cake. The three are awesome and play their characters so well. A special shout out to Cam Gigandet, he needs a break out role. He is a good actor, but there are too many like him. It is so hard to outshine others...
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Meh! It's okay
Most things seemed logical from start to end. It was an alumni get together evening with more dinosaurs, new and old, in the background making loud thunderous scream.
Lots of face-to-face closeups with pre-historical predators. Gee, their breathe was enough to kill. It was a re-assembled cast with one new additon: Kayla. She was a pilot, and she flied the main cast in and out was all. Who was Kayla? The pilot. As usual, several of the key action squences were out in the trailers, so nothing was exciting there.
It must be a tongue-and-cheek jab at Apple spaceship when the control center the same look : round donut. Lewis Dodgson, the bad business man, a la Tim Cook. It has to be an insider joke. Perhaps? Maybe I am over-analyzing.
And we got it, lots of iconic shots repeated here.
Overall, it's an entertaining movie if the Jurassic franchise is your thing.
The Lost City (2022)
Could it be worse?
No one will remember this film, because it's as hollow as donut hole. There are bad but better films that are more watchable, like Jumanji 1 and 2. And if they tried to xerox Douglas and Turner "Romancing the Stone" it's two decades too late. And Brad Pitt in this, really? He needed money obviously. At one point, I was sure Channing Tatum was donning a Mark Whalberg's action figures. LOL, towards the end he became a GI Joe again?! Saving the day, kinda.
The most ridiculous thing was the makeup. After days of running in the jungle, sleeping in a hammock, camping, etc. Loretta had had perfect eye liners, makeups and lashes on! And had had blushes and shadow on to highlight her cheeks.
On top, it had awful dialogues and storyline. Despite all, Daniel Radcliffe was quite brilliant in it.
Bullock has to realize her time of Miss Congeniality was over a decade ago.
It's disappointing after watching her in Bird Box and Gravity, she would pick a project like this. Oh, I see, she was one of the producers. It makes perfect sense now.
The Winchesters: You're Lost Little Girl (2022)
You're Lost , Winchesters
Is it me or is it getting worse? More monsters and less John and Mary may help to revive the show's bad start. I watched all 15 seasons of Supernatural, binge watching, Mary was hardly a hot-head, bossy, push-over, so do something about it. And John is like a wet puppy - oh Mary, Mary, Mary! And Mary's eyes-mind is telling John: just do your job as a hunter already.
I will watch a couple more episodes, but 3rd episode was disappointing. A good point from another reviewer here: there is no chemistry between John and Mary. So far only Carlos is interesting and is able to be comic relief.
P. S. Charmed could pull off 4 seasons, because it had lots of supernatual stuff going on.
Stake Land (2010)
Worth watching
Sometimes you don't know what you will end up watching, cause there are really a lot of craps on streaming TV. Even the higher publicized ones can be real bad.
So you think there can be only be so many derivatives of vampire movies to watch, but this one has a little bit of humanity mixes into it- refreshing. Perhaps. Unfortunately, the entire movie was very white...focused. There was a token latino (lead), and black guy, but overall it was very white and southern US, i.e., in the name of God and their Bible, they could only be the chosen to override the worst evils there were: vampires.
Mister becomes Martin surrogate parent when his actual ones were killed by a vampire, and it didn't spare his baby brother. Mister the vampire killer makes his kill and no one in Martin's family remains. Martin can only follow Mister and becomes his padawan, or karate kid. Martin has to learn DIY Howto kill vampires quickly... Vampires killings are no manageable until they encounter a group of "religious" zealots hunting for the weak. For them, a nun is "good meat" despite all.
We have a happy ending, and neo-Adam and neo-Eve arrive at the New Eden: Canada, while Mister carried on his own macho-no-more-vampires life, cause Martin can handle himself now.
Best watch with beers or wines and chips, and it's all good.
Prey (2022)
Entertaining!
Certainly, it's a woman-power movie. It has a clever trailer to capture your interest, but there are more to the film.
I recognize Amber Midthunder (Naru) from Legion (Kerry), another Marvel franchise.
The story was like other Predator movies, but it changed the time and space of when it happened: colonization of North America by Europeans. Why predator chose this location, I had no idea. Perhaps, it's to show they had been around as long as human looked for settlement in the west. The movie was trying to build on couple of narratives. First, Naru is as strong as the alien, and even without the alien predator, native Indian tribes were in constant threats of other aliens at home(European settlers). The cast was appropriately represented, so there should be any complaints from that. All in all, it is a good movie, without any dragging or over clumsy explanations of its history elements, like the King's Man I watched a few days ago.
The French men depiction was correct too, they were migrators who were ancestors of French Canadians (Québec). I caught a word that is particular to Québécois.
The King's Man (2021)
Fooled by the Title
I love the 2 Kingsman movies, and are my favorite. They are cheeky and funny. Time goes by fast with special effects, CGI and the story telling.
The King's Man was a drag of time, there was very little to chew on scene after scene. No character I really care for, cause I didn't know or couldn't guess what their goals are. Perhaps, the film was made for a British audience, and I supposed why the long history lesson: real or fictional? Again, I didn't care.
I, hereby, say this is not a prequel of the 2 Kingsman movies. If you argue, then I count the last 3 mins as the prequel.
So disappointed with marketing it like a prequel.
Uncharted (2022)
Same old, same old
Four characters, four actors, what do they have in common? Nothing. The casting was disastrous, there were no chemistry among 2,3, or 4. When you added lines after lines of blahblahblah, it made it worse.
The only thing worth watching is a few new CGI, special effects.
So they thought it was "funny" between Nathan and Victor, their one-liners, tic-tac-toe? Not at all. I don't remember my cheek muscle moved at all.
Tom Holland did a good job, but the release is too close to Spider-Man: No Way Home, so we saw him doing acrobatic tricks as Spiderman would. As for Mark Whalberg, all he needed was Ted (Teddy Bear), and not Tom Holland.
Clearly there will be a sequel, let's see if it will be any better. But as history tells us, Part II always sucks, even for an extraordinary film.
Morbius (2022)
It's not that terrible!!! I've watched worse.
Don't let others persuade you what not to watch. We are streaming anyway, so the pro is you have the power to FF, and skip parts that you don't want to see. Unlike in a movie theater, choices are limited.
Jared Leto is not bad as an actor, he is amazing in Mr. Nobody, sure he is eccentric, But not to a level he can't act. Why It's okay for Christian Bale goes deep into his character(s), but it's a no-no for Jared Leto? Likely, he doesn't care, he has an Oscar.
The script was not up to par, but no surprise there, because it was re-written many times. The concept was okay, and the added a little suspense in the middle was good (fooled me). Not being critical, Leto had no chemistry with either supporting actors. He was too focus to be Morbius, perhaps. The special effects were original and nice. The biggest failure is the two FBI agents, one was trying to be humorous and the other was "Why so serious?"
Likely there will be no sequel.
Tron: Legacy (2010)
Stunning!
I watched the animated series, Tron:uprising, first, and was surprised how well made it was. Then I went back to the original Tron to refresh my memory of the story. I only remember the racing cars, odd looking helmet, and neon reflective suits. It was so worthwhile, especially there are so many craps on streaming services.
Tron: Legacy is about Tron's son go into the grid and realises his father is still alive. It's a sequel of the original and a pre-quel of uprising's. The story itself is simple and straight-forward, is Flynn a God that can create life-form with consciousness? The answer is yes, but can he control his creation? That answer is in the movie.
One reason to watch is because the franchise makes sense, it's a saga no less. I wish they were more seasons with Tron: uprising. The story doesn't with its last episode, and it has so much yet to tell. Another reason is the amazing technical and visual effects shot bites and bytes onto a 4KUHD TV screen, with spatial Dolby 5.1 sound propels the movie along. I didn't give it justice the first time maybe because I was watching it on a 42' HDTV with cropped display.
So if you are looking for something to binge, TRON (the saga) is a good choice. BTW, the animated series is also very advant-garde, and colorful.
Miss Meadows (2014)
Katie Holmes is a good actor
I picked and watched Miss Meadows because ofits trailer; it was a mix of absurd, danger and funny all at once. I am glad and had a good time watching it. It reminds me of Japanese movies that are so WTF, but you will glue to the screen regardless. The premise was to understand the psyche of Miss. Meadows, was she a cuckoo and steps away from a mental hospital, or she was doing things that could be seen as brave? This dissonance will keep, perhaps, you interested. It was also a love-at-first-sight and I-was-pregnant film.
A small town elementary school has a new substitute teacher, Miss Meadows, that is a bit off. The town sheriff is investigating murders, suddenly, haunted in a quiet neighborhood. There are few factual evidences to build a case, except a sketch of the alleged killer, and autopsy results of fatal gunshot wounds in all circumstances. It takes a while for the sheriff to know the killer has been right in front of him all along. Hence, arrest they ? Or let them move to another town? What is Miss. Meadows role among all these unusual things happen in a sleepy town?
If you like odd-ball movies, you will like it. By no means it's a stupid movie, in fact it is actually cerebral. It deals with social-economics, gender, race, and mental illness issues that could happen anywhere in North America.
The Terminal List (2022)
Stop at Ep 3 ... It'd be relevant after 9/11, not 2022.
It could have been a great series. Ep 2 could have led to a different path, and more humanistic. As predictable as it was, and a truck loads of firearms painted the picture clearly what it would be. At Ep. 3, the doubt had been totally erased. And I refuse to see more gun violence. Let me guess, Madam Secretary of State is a bad apple who orchestrated the whole deal.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
It got to me, ...the first f#$k uttered, and it followed...
Something was not right, it had no oomph. Perhaps, it kept too close to the original CAPCOM video game: 2D. Hence, there was always a delay in actions. Like in one scene, you saw the chief load bullets into his revolver. If (hugh) we were also in the 1980s, perhaps that "got you" would work, and I might even clinched my teeth hoped for the best. My point is that it was lame in 2022. Maybe it's attractive to the un-contaminated, 5-12 year-old? But they are already playing 4K , 120fps PS5 version of the franchise, so they don't give a fork. So who is this movie for? Maybe an alien from Mars, I suppose.
Luckily, it got to streaming quickly. It will be a double whammy if you need to pay to see it.
Per easter egg after the ending, it's likely there will be a part 2 coming, if (hugh)?
Død snø 2 (2014)
How zombie movie should be...
I really like Nordic movies. Some of them are sarcastic and funny. This is a must-see film. A totally politically incorrect zombie movie. It withholds nothing, everyone, age and gender, is a potential victim. That's why it's fun to watch...no guilt. I haven't seen the first one, but I assume it will be just as funny, gross, brutal, sexy and delicious.
The story is Martin escaped from the Nazi zombies less an arm cut off by a chainsaw. After a car accident, Martin is rescued and laying in a hospital bed.
He warns of a zombie apocalypse, but he is accused of killing all his friend in a cabin up the mountain.
Next, the zombies descend to town to complete their order.
Just love it, especially none of the A, B, C-rated films .... is interesting to watch: formulaic and uber PC.
Legion (2017)
Meh...
Lots of time wasted, a lot of creative stuff shown, but lots of failed momentum. Three seasons to explain one common theme was over-bearing. Despite all, I managed to finish it.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Dull
A rather boring movie, it is. If you watch the trailer, you pretty much have watched the movie. I mean the good part. As usual a lot of destruction that no one seemed to care. A dull romantic subplot. Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams had a nice rapport, but ignored and cut short. Overall, special effects were at par. No wow at all; what a carnage!
Moonfall (2022)
The worst sci-fi film
First off, if you are a sci-if movie fan, you notice the whole thing was cut and paste of other movies. The only way to watch this is try to imagine you are hunting for Easter eggs: tons. As for dialogues go, I prefer it has none; a silent movie will be prefect, played with a game's soundtrack. The guy who first found the moon was out of orbit was annoying as hell. And I am 100% sure it won't be nominated for Oscar's Best Markup. Halle Berry looked more like she was in Monster Ball, then a top NASA scientist. In one scene, Patrick Wilson was over-tanned with a brownish orange face. Honestly, if it had been pared down to 30 mins with only action scenes , maybe it would be tolerable.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
Stupid but watchable
Basically 2 brats and a stupid father reintroduced the deadly virus to a safe quarantined zone. Otherwise it was very predictable From the 1st scene onwards, it was predictable how it would end
I watched it because I wanted to see Renner Byrne, and Elba in their earlier works before they became A-listers. Well, they didn't become who they are now if they are not talented.
Watch if 4 same reason.
West Side Story (2021)
Hard to beat the original
Yah, yah it's Spielberg-made, it just wasn't gripping at all. Perhaps, it was hard to go back to that era. Both leads were adequate but not to a point of vouching for them, and less so developing sympathy for them. The highlights were the mob dance scenes, nothing else was terribly memorable. Watch when you have spare time, and it was long.
Turning Red (2022)
Really, really good.
Sure there were stereotypes, but nothing malicious. I will put it at par with Monster Inc.. Being in Toronto, my home turf, was a bonus; places were very familiar and accurately depicted. I was surprised that I liked it after a big disappointment from watching The Incredibles 2, after which I had had not seen any Disney or Pixar animations. Watch it, it is a gem for a family to watch together. Who
doesn't want to pinch the red panda!
Reacher (2022)
We have Reacher!
At first I wasn't so sure with the show's trailer and first episode that I'd like Richtson's Reacher. After a bit of research I learned that he was in DC Universe's Titan, so not a total unknown. This series was close to the book that I read few years back, so the story was familiar to me. That's good. Once I finished watching 2nd episode, it was no turning back. I binge watched episodes that followed. It got better and better, and Richtson was Reacher. I am sure there will be a 2nd season like Connelly's Bosch, which is another one of my favorite novel characters. So I will be looking out for the announcement. It was well done.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
Et voilà ? le fin!
Episode 6 was the only redeemable show. It finally had some tension, excitement, and space war actions. This was the finale after I checked and confirmed. Honestly I'd stop @ season 5; it's good enough for me ending there.
Here's the elephant in the room, WTF with the 10 mins montage in each episode at the beginning with the future colonists? Where are we going with it? A separate show? So out of context and without explanation, and definitely no Easter eggs ?
Disappointed as the whole season 6 went.
The Expanse (2015)
Final season (5) is boring!
We were at episode 4, so far it has been the worst of the 5 seasons. Everyone was pissed off ! Holden was so skinny and lethargic, every line he delivered was a burden. Drummer should have been the main character instead of Naomi (over exposed) ! Since season 1 she has been the toughest character. So tired watching Marco !! The show lost focus, should it be about the ring? Instead of constant fighting among the 3 races? Which had been covered in season 1 & 2. So far it has been disappointing. Perhaps it's closer to the comics? BTW, Bobbie was also pissed.
12 Monkeys (2015)
Flawless - The Witness had spoken
Excellent plots and subplots. Nicely tied in a bundle. 4 seasons of good acting, scripts, visual effects, and time travelling. Most TV shows I roll my eyes after a few episodes, but I am having a second go with 4 seasons of 12 Monkeys. Afterall, there is a needle in a haystack.
Supernatural: Keep Calm and Carry On (2016)
Unnecessary
I don't know why the annoying British MLs was included. Dean and Sam saw and helped God last season, so who the F#$k this Brits thought they were. They should bow to the Winchester!
