La veuve de Saint-Pierre (2000)
Ok
This is solid 7 out of 10. I felt as tho we weren't given enough details of the "story", before joining in on the movie. I think if there was flashback or two, or if the movie began about a year or two before the actions took place, the current situation would have meant more. I didn't feel I knew any of the characters, so I was not able to really care all that much to what happened to them. Acting was suburb, and the premise was right on. No sugar coating in the ending, and the costumes and "feel" of the scenery brought me to the 1800s. Overall, it was good, not great.
Titanic (1997)
A modern-day classic
Getting past the fact that Leo is way too young looking for Kate, this really was a great modern film. Every time I see it, I find something new to like about it. Knowing the ending before going in (from a historical perspective) does not dampen the excitement that leads up to the inevitable. Costumes are divine, and although Kate overacts (kinda sounds like a breathless Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz occasionally), the acting is believable. The recreation of the Titanic is amazing. Considering this is not the typical film I would enjoy (I tend to avoid over-blown Hollywood "blockbusters"), it was extremely enjoyable.
Star Wars (1977)
I guess I never "got it"
The first time I saw this, I was very young and fell asleep midway thru. I finally saw it on the re-release cause I was sick of being one of the few people that never saw it all the way thru. I guess I would have been better off staying awake in '77 cause I really was not impressed. Maybe back in '77, when special effects were not as good as they are today, I would have been impressed. And to be honest, I am not a sci-fi nut. I can see the attraction, but I will never buy into the hype. It is decent....ok, at best, in my book.
Chuck & Buck (2000)
Kinda Creepy
I agree this movie had dark undertones. The look and feel was definitely low-budget but the story stood up well. It definitely made me feel uncomfortable at times---kinda like when you want to say to a character in film "No, PLEASE, just DON'T do that!" I felt so sorry for Buck, he did not mean to be the way the was...he just didn't know any other way. This definitely is not a light-hearted fun movie. It makes you think and feel a lot. A tiny bit too short, by today's standard's but it got the point across well.
Heathers (1988)
One of my faves of all time
I love this movie. I was it in the theater 'way back when and have seen it about 50 times since. (Yes, I love this movie.) It combines black comedy and great acting to make for a disturbing, yet watchable film. One thing I recently wondered is if this movie would be blackballed with all the recent high school violence (I know there is talk about a sequel). Granted, this takes a very cynical look at violence by teens, but when it was made, I am sure the writers had no clue what was to come when it came to senseless violence in our schools.
Ryder and Slader are amazing and the chemistry is perfect. Some of the lines in this film are pure brilliance. It is a twisted look at the "Unpopular" kid's view and solution to high school cliques and the "perfect people".
I love this movie.
Pi (1998)
Disappointing
Well, I am making Pi my first review for IMDB as I was SO disappointed in it (and wanted to complain to SOMEone)! Having a Math background, and loving indie films, I thought this was the film for me....WRONG! Watching it almost gave me as big of a headache as the dude in the film had. The camera jumpiness was worse than Blair Witch, and the dream sequences were just silly. I also felt every racial/ethnic stereotype was played out for no reason. I did not care for anyone in the film, I thought the concept was just ridiculous. I just hated it. I am glad I did not see it in the theater....
