El traje (2002)
Society is cruel
I saw this film at the San Sebastian 2002 festival. To be honest, I went to see it just because I had three hours free, and this one was just at that time.
But I really liked it. In fact, it was the best movie I saw there. It makes you think.
What is more important, what you are or what people think of you? In fact, what are you going to believe? What you know about yourself or what people think they know about you?
Give it a try, it will be worth your time.
The Others (2001)
Amenabar still rocks...
... but I have to remark one bad point about this movie. The ending didn't surprise me at all. That's why I give it 9 and not 10.
Anyway, wonderful movie. If you still haven's seen it, what are you waiting for?
Abre los ojos (1997)
Interesting movie with a ridiculous ending
Oh, OK. Another Amenábar movie. After Thesis, anything by this guy would be welcome. And the movie is quite good, but... oh, he ruined it at the end. I'm not going to tell anything about it (if you still haven't seen it, I still recommend it, anyway), but... the ending is told twice. When we finally realize what has been happening in the last hour, we are told again in a scene on the roof of a building that could (and should) have been removed...
Nos miran (2002)
A disturbing movie
Disturbing and somewhat weird. That's what I would say about this one. Carmelo Gómez is at his best, but there was something that I didn't like when the film ended around 03:00 AM... 'Nos miran' is one of the new terror spanish movies, with a similar atmosphere to 'The Others' by Amenábar or 'The Nameless' by Balagueró (both of them are must-see). But there is something about the script I really don't like... The story starts as a typical detective movie, with Carmelo Gómez trying to find out what happened with Barreiros, a married man who disappeared three years ago. After finding nothing, he looks for stories of other people who disappeared... and then his life turns weird...
The story is interesting. Bun when the movie ended, I couldn't help thinking "How? When? Where?..." The end is not well explained and that's why I think it could have been much better.
Tesis (1996)
The best surprise in the last 10 years
In 1996 I went to the cinema with no idea of which movie I wanted to see. This one was a spanish film, so I thought "Agh! no, please...", but the words "My name is Angela. I am going to be killed" called my attention. So I thought "OK, let's give spanish cinema one more try..." (I have to say I'm spanish, but spanish cinema before Tesis is 90% junk) And it was marvelous. I had never seen such a good spanish movie. And it had been a long time since I had seen such a good movie, spanish or foreign. Since that day many more have come: Abre los ojos, El arte de morir, Nadie conoce a nadie... Since that day, I don't think spanish cinema is junk anymore
