Relativity (1996)
Sweet
A sweet show. Definitely more of a drama than the nighttime soap-opera many may have thought of it as, and in a situation that many could relate (no pun intended) to. The opening episode has Isabele returning from a trip abroad where she met and started a relationship with a man other than her fiancé, who was waiting at home. What follows is a deep study of how old friends and relatives by-proxy remain that way and intertwine with new ones.
I definitely would suggest it if you can catch it in reruns (I haven't seen it listed anywhere) and will be buying it as a gift for a friend who absolutely adored the show.
Charade (1963)
Wonderful
The first time I saw this movie I was amazed at how wonderful it was. Witty, intelligent, and thoroughly confusing at times, you become engrossed in trying to figure out just who is trustworthy or not. Of course, Cary Grant never hurts to have on-screen, and this is actually my favorite of Audrey Hepburn's roles. It holds up perfectly. If you want to have fun while watching a movie, start here.
Fight Club (1999)
This is one amazing film
I have been told repeatedly to watch this film by several people, and
finally got around to it this last weekend. One word- AMAZING. I had the
luxury of watching it in a home theater system with a very good
surround sound setup, but I can tell it will still be incredible in any
environment because of the absolute depth of the acting and story. I
believe that there have been several good overviews of the story, so
will not delve into that, I will merely state that after watching it twice, I'm desparate to own the DVD, and I don't even have a player yet! Watch
this movie!
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
It just keeps getting better and better
The first time I saw Phantom Menace was the first release
day. I had gone to visit my brother, who is also an avid Star
Wars fan, and we were psyched to see it together. As we
discussed it afterwards, my first rating was a 7-8. The
following Saturday, we went to see it with another brother
who came to visit also, and my rating went up to an 8-9. I've
seen it 6 times in all now, and all I can say is that it just
gets better and better for me all the time. If you've seen it
once, watch it again, you'll appreciate it more. If you haven't
seen it, don't judge it off of your first viewing, remember,
this was the most highly anticipated film OF ALL TIME and
people just didn't give it the break or chance that it
deserves.
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Wow- what an original!
I couldn't wait to see this movie ever since the first time I saw the trailer- which I believe to be one of the best trailers ever. The screenplay is singular in it's presentation of a concept that to most extents would seem absurd- the ability to be within another persons head, and the reactions and events that spring from such a situation. If you want to enjoy a movie that has given a new direction to originality in screenwriting, go see this. I don't want to say anymore, as I'm afraid of spoiling any of the sheer joy of watching this film for anyone.
Touch (1997)
I enjoyed this film on it's own merits.
I did not start watching this movie as an Elmor Leonard novelization come to film. In fact I wasn't aware that it was a Leonard novel until I just accessed this page. This said, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I originally checked it out of the video store because of Christopher Walken's involvement, plus I had seen an interview with Bridget Fonda on the making of the movie, and found the concept to be intriguing. I found the characters, acting and direction on target for the subject matter, the way that recent journalistic direction and everyday cynicism would effect the life of a person with real God-given talents. The experiences that Juvenal goes through are realistic, as are his reactions. Definitely grist for reflection, and I'm an atheist. All in all, don't go into this movie expecting it to be something it's not, and you won't be
Twin Peaks (1990)
A cool drink of water to some road weary eyes.
Twin Peaks is a quirky, offbeat and somewhat dark exploration into the seamier side of rural America. You are left with the feeling that everyone around you has a secret that could be exposed by any twist of fate, as could yours. Viewing Twin Peaks is a rare pleasure, and I highly suggest several repeat viewings if possible. If you allow yourself to become involved enough, and open to the many different aspects of storytelling presented, I think that you'll see not only the legendary David Lynch bizarreness, but also a tapestry of movement and exchange between characters as never presented before. However, also try to allow yourself the leisure of viewing this series as a simple, mast
