Moving, yet...
5 March 2001
This was an incredibly moving film. It makes you stop and realize some of the discrimination gays and aids victims go through. But I found it a bit unrealistic on some levels. Andrew Becket's family was way too understanding an compassionate. I've never met a family that was so accepting of a gay member. At least someone turns their back, or hides their children... And I doubt the trial would have been won in real life in the 90's. As time progresses, the law is getting behind more discriminated minorities, but not then. The movie was wonderful, stirring, moving. It left me with hope, that the world may get better for gays and aids victims. But it left me crying imagining my own child in that position. I also speak all of this as a Christian who believes that the act of homosexual sex is a sin, but we are all sinners, aren't we? I pray for a day when families are like they are in this film, and when people cannot fire someone based on anything which they fear--sexual orientation, color, race, creed, religion.......

Candidate for one of the ten worst films of all time
28 February 2001
What were they thinking? Like everyone else, I saw the big names, Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Sutherland and thought it must be at least ok. WRONG! It looks like they were given their lines with no time to rehearse and made to perform on the spot. All lines and interactions seem as though they kept the first take. They must have spent all their budget on the big names and had to pinch pennies on the filming. And they must not have had enough for writers either, so all of the material was stolen. When I saw the first little robot bug, I thought "Runaway" (which, by the way, is a movie that scares the sh** out of me) but it never came close. Hello, Deep Rising, Star Trek's 'borg'. I can't believe I sat through it. Not worth the time, Not worth the money.

Ok, what did I just see? It's like I just watched Benny Hill meets Twin Peaks. Last night I happened upon the first episode of this weird, dark comedy, and I'm certain I'll be tuning in for more. Get ready for bizarre and possibly disturbing imagery and give this a try.

I wanted to like this movie...
11 April 2000
I must confess, I went into this movie REALLY wanting to like it. I had heard bad reviews, but thought, 'hey, I don't always agree with critics...' Anyway, I was deeply disappointed. I was left wondering whether the filmmaker or cast wanted us to believe Jeanne, or if they wanted us to think she was a lunatic. Milla played Jeanne as furtive, flighty and explosive. Dustin Hoffman's character came out of nowhere without explanation. John Malkovich, one of my favorite actors, played an empty, shallow character, and disappeared from the story near the end without a resolution for his character. One might argue that the Dauphin was shallow, but I mean the character was one-dimensional. Also, the movie was excessively gory. I was ready for an epic, and instead saw a weak film that left me with more questions than answers or entertainment.

disturbingly fascinating

I caught this movie late one night and never knew what hit me. This was one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen, yet had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. Alan Rickman is an excellent "bad guy" but this character beats all others. I've never been so affected by a movie! It's been 6 years and I still can't forget "Closet Land."
