So real, so cool
19 November 1998
Anyone who has ever visited Taipei would agree that this movie is so real by picturing out the decadent city. The city is getting more terrible with people who deeply believe in fake democracy but ignore their environmental improving. Our young heroes are victims like all the living victims one will easily find in streets of Taipei.

KUROSAWA'S BEST
19 November 1998
Kurosawa is a proved humanitarian. This movie is totally about people living in poverty. You will see nothing but angry in this movie. It makes you feel bad but still worth. All those who's too comfortable with materialization should spend 2.5 hours with this movie.

This is a sleepy movie.

It seems that director Hou has failed dealing with big ideas. This movie is too quiet and too emotionless. His early movies are much better with small everyday facts.

More than a homosexual movie, and great.
14 November 1998
While most of Chinese/Taiwanese film directors spend their effort on the past legend,Tsai focuses on the present city life scene. It's always an unhappy challenge to deal with Reality and it needs a lots of guts. And Tsai does it faithfully. The father and son's love/hate complex is not a surprise in the asian society. This is more than a homosexual movie. While Lee An is trying too hard for the happy ending, Tsai is more interested in individual identity that has long been a fatal conflict in most asian families.

I've seen at least 3 different versions of this greatest film of our time. Japanese version is too bad with all the nude scene masked. It's ridiculous that Japanese like to blur all the great movies .It must be a country with big money but with deep moral insecurity. Italian version is great. However, I still expect to see the original one edited by Pasolini himself,if there's any. It's always a blessing to enjoy Pasolini's great talent.

This is not Disney stuff. Not at all for children. Pasolini had done an excellent job on this well-known Arabian myth. The most interesting part is the way Pasolini interprets the relation between masters/slaves,and men/women. It's an intellectual version of 1001 nights.
