Æon Flux (2005)
Truly Woeful
Every now and again you see a preview for a movie and you think "hmmm not sure about this one!" For me Aeon Flux was one of those... Charlize Theron.. great actress, sci fi.. good genre.. a future city where the whole of mankind resides... OK it sounds interesting...
well it's not!! the acting was woeful, character development nil the plot thin and contrived. The only mildly redeeming feature was the premise of the film which could be revisited in another film with better writers and director, and done so much better.
There were some moments that were mildly entertaining, but certainly not enough to warrant spending time or money on this trite garbage. Avoid like the plague.
The Aristocrats (2005)
You will be immersed in filth.. and love it
I haven't laughed so hard since "Something about Mary" The film is a right hoot... granted the material being discussed is wrong... I mean it is really really wrong.. but if you can't enjoy this then you belong in a different cinema.
Sit down, relax and go for the ride...
Some of the renditions are absolutely hilarious, others are not...
its amazing to see the same joke told in so many different ways... from completely deadpan... to a mimed version, from the bulk standard to the worst acts imaginable,,, comedians from all walks of life an points of view deliver this joke with great enthusiasm.
wonderful.. now excuse me while I go and shower.
Aragami (2003)
Sensational
I loved this film.
I loved the dialogue
I loved the combat sequences
I loved the set.
Do yourself a favour and see it the way it was meant to be seen, back to back with 2LDK. Aragami is obviously the better movie, but together you can see the results of the competition between the directors.
And as was said below, I would love to see what 2 Hollywood (or in my case Australian) directors could come up with.
A great journey.. strongly recommended
Underworld: Evolution (2006)
Sorely Disappointing
I always felt that the original Underworld had so much potential, and it failed to deliver.
The opening sequences for Underworld Evolution had me excited, I thought "Wow here we go!!" And that was the last time I thought that.
I felt as though I was watching an episode of a poorly designed Role Game module.
I was waiting to see a dice rolling box in the bottom right corner during combat.
It was predictable, insubstantial, Hollywood tripe.
Having said that the voyeur in me thinks that Kate is hot in her outfit
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Yesterday I thought "hmm I might go see a move! M:I-2 had just been released coool!!!!".
I was all excited, M:I-2 had all the right ingredients, actors: Tom Cruise (do I need to mention any of his movies), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Out of Sight), Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) and the extremely "talented" Thandiwe Newton (Interview with a Vampire) (I think I am in love) and directed by action flick guru John Woo. Not to mention that it was shot mostly in and around Sydney. I couldn't help myself but get caught up in the hype.
Half an hour into the movie I had that feeling "I really really really want to like this, but it's crap." The heart and brain where in complete conflict and turmoil; and sometimes you just have to let one of them win, but M:I-2 left me now where to go the brain was the complete winner.
You are often asked and expected to suspend belief when walking into a cinema, however M:I-2 asks you to suspend intelligence. There are more holes in the plot than a fishing net. Every scene is highly predictable, the light witty lines are far too few, the overuse of the M:I latex face, and excruciating overuse of slow-mo (which of course made the film that much longer and my suffering that much more).
I could go into a deep and thorough shredding of the plot.. but why waste my time and yours anymore. This is one "B" grade Hong Kong Kung Fu action flick, without the Kung Fu. I was very disappointed. Give yourself a break, save your money and time or get the Matrix out on Video!
3/10

PS Oh the scenes of Sydney are great though.. so if you are an international friend go see it just for the shots of Sydney :)
