I've decided to review each of the short films that make up this series individually.

More staggering CGI here for a tale about an unloved military personal carrier, involved in an unnamed conflict on a distant planet. Having lost its entire crew twice, it's deemed unlucky until skilled pilot Colby (voiced by Samira Wiley) manages a successful extraction in it under extreme combat. From there, Colby and 13 prove an unstoppable team.

The CGI in this one is amazing again, I recognised Samira Wiley immediately as she provided the template for the character visually, as well as the voice. The war scenario is a bit generic and no background is provided as to what the conflict is about, or who it's with. The story is OK, though perhaps lacking in genuine intrigue and twists to make it truly memorable.

A well-made and genuinely emotional little story.

Cool, but generic story
This is probably the most 'real' looking of the LD&R shorts so far. While it's still in the uncanny valley, there are moments that you could swear this was live action. And while the visuals are great, the story is pretty generic. Nothing very interesting or groundbreaking. Despite that, it's a cool short

Loved every second of it!

A simple story well told. I loved the idea that a simple drop-ship formed a bond with its own pilot ... a little like 'space-Herbie' . Amazing visually and the main character was well-acted and drew the viewer into the narrative. Brilliant, one of the best of this series!

This experience felt like a game: beautiful visuals, generic okay story, and just not that great.

Really good.

I found this to be one of the best episodes in the series and this would be a good setting for its own short series.

Interesting but exaggeratedly

Good animation, interesting story, but too much mysticism. I suppose, because of the short length of episodes of the series, the authors stuck too much superstitious mysticism of this plane, because there was too much luck for "one square minute" of the episode.

Awww... The feels are reals...

A solid, simple tale about a pilot and her trusty old ship.

Excellent characterisations, impeccable CG and a heartwarming story. Could be considered a masterclass in empathy.

I never thought I could feel so emotional about steel.

It's hard to get sentimental about a ship with no personality.

Love, Death, and Robots

Lucky 13 ( 4.5 out of 5 stars).

The episode delivers another stunning animation. Great story that leaves a little to imagination about the futuristic war. It follows a rookie pilot being assigned to a jet number 13. Which has seen plenty of battles but survived. The animation is stunning. The action is amazing. It delivers some insane and intense aerial combat. One can wonder what the enemy was they were fighting against. It was another fun and good episode worth checking out.

Well-constructed short, "Soldier and his Horse" kind of story but Sci-Fi setting
celervic31 January 2020
This is one of the "weaker" shorts of LDR, but by no means weak!

The story is fairly straightforward, and the concept is put out immediately, as with most shorts this length. The relationship between the main characters (including Lucky 13) is built up in a natural and not over-the-top way. The main character knows the ship is a ship, but attachment still occurs in a "..there are many like it, but this one is mine..." kind of way.

The setting leaves one wanting to find out more about who the enemies were, what they were fighting for, why were they fighting our protagonist's side?

These are all questions that almost become moot once you realize this is a story about a soldier and her weapon - one that thinks and is intelligent.

And that's the beauty of it. Like Chappie - misconstrued as an action dystopian film, while it's more a story about a fledgling AI developing into something awe-inspiring - it is one that tells two stories: one through the setting and the other through the character interactions and/or development.

Where's the twist
rrober-2770412 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason why you stay interested is bc you're waiting to find out why the ship was so unlucky for its previous owners and so lucky for the current pilot. Then instead of explaining it at the end they just give you a generic ending. Writers got lazy on this one. Everything other than the plot is great though.

Best of the series (so far)
KilgoreHoover3 April 2019
Not your typical shoot 'em up cowboys-in-space cartoon. This episode has an actual storyline and some depth. The animation is good, but not great. No matter how many shades of color they manage to squeeze into tinier and tinier spaces, and no matter how many different textures they render, computer animators just have not been able to get the eyes right. It's always the eyes. But I digress.

The characters in "Lucky 13" are much more lifelike, more human, than any other of the episodes I've seen so far. That contributed to the drama of the story, which made it much more engaging. And it really was all about love, death, and robots.

Best of the series.
mhorg201820 March 2019
Beautifully animated, and the best written episode of the entire series. Whoever did this should be immediately hired to do Starship Troopers, they'd do a far better job of it than the movie and it's four progressively lamer sequels. Just an excellent episode.

Good episode. One of a number of episodes to feature hyper-realistic animation which I'm a big fan of. The music was also very good. The story itself was fairly standard and I wasn't big on the action scenes. It did make me intrigued about the lore of the world, and I suppose this would make a good introduction if this were to be more than just a short. Apart from that there wasn't a whole lot to it, just a pretty cool episode

Best of the series

In the chaotic world of war, soldiers seek stability and often bond with their instruments of war. As a former tank commander, I identified with the connection between the fighter pilot and her plane. Stunning visuals, simple yet effective story and great action.

Sci-fi lovers dream
Through_the_lookinglass4 December 2019
I have read the books by the author of this story. (Marko Kloos). He has a univers based on humans living in space. I've always wondered what it would look like inn a series. I enjoyed it. It isn't a lot of sci-fi stories like this out there. Exept the expanse ofcorse. Would have liked to se more of this.

Eh
sclafunk20 March 2019
I think this is by far the weakest one in the whole anthology. It's by no means awful, but compared to the rest, it's weak storytelling. It almost seemed like it was gonna be a commercial for something that never got pst the editing room but was sitting around so they used it. It's just has this weird "corporation trying To be hip" feel to me.

If you haven't read the books for "Frontlines" by Marko Kloos, then I highly recommend it. I would love to see more of this.

Sci Fi at its best! A wasteland filled with enemies, a crew that needs to be picked up or dropped off, and a captain that that slowly flips about the reputation of her ship.

Sorry, Not Sorry. I Loved This One.
bradley-trent26 August 2020
This one doesn't seem to be as popular as some of the other episodes, but I found it especially poignant. I have a love of vehicles and a love of weapons and a love of tales of bravery and sacrifice. All found satisfaction in this one. The animation was excellent, the voice/rotoscoping acting was spot-on, and the action sequences were cleverly done. I found it entirely satisfying.

Great episode.
lorez604 April 2019
Having read all of the Kloos works, which will surely meet the favour of all the Military SF fans out there, I really liked the way the atmosphere of the battlefield, the machines and the soldiers were portrayed in this episode. The story is good, too, as expected. I could use more :-)

Underrated episode
vijdarius00118 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write reviews but after seeing this episode, i couldn't resist. The bond between lucky 13 and the pilot was amazing. Yes it is cliched but i don't care. I usually never feel sad or empathetic on seeing any movies or episode but this one got me. Easily could be a feature film without a doubt or even a game!
