Sisu (2022)
Good movie, marred by its over-the-topness
It's nice to see a minimalistic, non bombastic action movie which focuses on blasting and mayhem and not on padding screen time, trying to set up a "cinematic universe" or whatever it is that Hollywood passes for action these days. The bad guys are bad, the good guy... well, not so bad, and the distinction is clear.
What drags this movie down is that there's "over the top" and there's "oh, you're Superman now". Apparently the protagonist can spend long long time underwater while being super active (killing bad guys), can survive being hanged *under the watchful eyes of his executioners* and simply can't be killed because the screenwriter decided so. Which is a bit of a let down, because if his super powers were toned down just a little it could have been a masterpiece.
Regardless, it's a very entertaining movie. If you're reading this review, you're probably going to enjoy the movie.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Great adventure.
When people write "amazing visuals" it's not only "nice pictures", it's amazing in the purest sense of the word: the viewer is amazed at the sights and sounds (and we watched the movie in an old fashion 2D screening). Add the acting of a great actors who cooperated in the past, action scenes from a director who does *great* action films for decades and you'll get a movie where you'll hardly feel the three hours fly by.
Why is not a 9 or 10? Because the plot is mediocre and the movie sometimes feels like someone was simply stringing a collection of (breathtaking) scenes together. There are some plot holes and baffling plot decisions and I'm not sure what will stay with me in the coming years others than the visuals (which are, if it wasn't clear, amazing).
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Enjoyable mess
It has some great action scenes and surprisingly touching scenes but the whole "wish granting mechanism as villian" is cluncky and it's not always easy to undersatnd what's going on and why. I do feel it received a little more hate than it should though, as it's an overall enjoyable experince.
No Strings Attached (2011)
Great romantic comedy
Opened the TV yesterday and it was on, sat with my wife to watch without knowing what I'm watching until the titles rolled.
Great movie if you can enjoy romantic comedies. The timing is perfect, there's good chemistry between the lead actors and the supporting roles all do great job (I especially liked Emma's room mates). If you don't like romantic comedies you can probably skip this one as well but if you do, it's definitely one you can watch more than once.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Didn't suffer so much since the latest Addams movie
God awful.
Not a fan, but I watched all the other eight and enjoyed them, but this is one piece of horrible movie. God awful plots, twists, jokes... everything, really. You can see every "surprise" from miles away. This old character is being shown early in the movie? Wow, surprise, he pops up near the end.
Terrible, real terrible movie. You don't *have* to watch it only because you watched the others. Really.
Love, Death & Robots: Lucky 13 (2019)
Best of the series
In the chaotic world of war, soldiers seek stability and often bond with their instruments of war. As a former tank commander, I identified with the connection between the fighter pilot and her plane. Stunning visuals, simple yet effective story and great action.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
For diehard fans only
The visuals were great but I just couldn't get over how ridiculous is the whole attitude towards time and space in this movie.
1. People just jump on an off stars and galaxies like they go for the store for a carton of milk. Everything is instantaneous. Distance is meaningless.
2. In the future we have robots doing everything but we still need a human to hold the wheel of every starship, from the smallest fighter to the largest cruiser. In one of the most ridiculous scenes in the movie the rebels are leaving their cruiser but an Admiral "has to stay and navigate the ship" because...what? It will hit a tree or a mailbox if they left the wheel?
3. Of course every battle has to be in eye range contact. Bombs are being dropped like it's WW2.
4. Also: Kylo Ren or whtever his name is is as intimidating as your annoying Emo neighbor. Good villains are either murderous death machines like Hulk (if Hulk was a villain) or cold an calculated like most good villains out there. Kylo Ren is just so angry and emotional you just want to slap him.
