The University plot was a filler
Near-L16 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
They introduce a small villain that makes robots strong enough to give Invincible trouble but not strong enough to crush the gay guy neck, it felt a little bit inconsistent to be honest, this is the only episode so far that felt like a filler. Definitely the weakest episode specially after setting the bars so high with the other episodes. The Mark relationship with the girl is annoying and they focus too much on that, its getting repetitive. A step backwards for sure. Hopefully it will get back on track next episodes. Loved recognizing Justin Roilands burps tho.

Not great on its own but the calm before the storm as a whole
koolkeithxb16 April 2021
Every character has been established in this episode for the better. We now have a strong connection with all of them so that makes the stakes high for when things do eventually go south (which is a good thing of course). I liked how this episode solely focused on the characters' relationships and responsibilities. It was grounded but also very tense. It sets a great foundation for the final two episodes and I'm all for it.

Forgettable, with some plot issues.
cooperbwright16 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really, really like Atom Eve's arc, but this episode didn't really hit its mark anywhere else. It was easily forgettable. I like how they show how superpowers can be used for good in ways that don't involve attacking things, but the rest of the show was just a run of the mill "villain of the week."

I can't see why Amber would get mad at him for "running away" from the cyborg. If all you knew was that he was a normal, dorky dude who got hit by a bus last week, what do you think he supposed to do? Also, the reveal that William and Rick were a couple came out of nowhere. I know that William was crushing on him hard, but Rick just acted like they were two buds the whole time up to the final showdown. I know it was supposed to be a surprise reveal, but it felt more like an asspull.

Wobbly beginning, super strong mid to final
finn984916 April 2021
I'm not anti romance in long running stories, it's just for Invincible's case so far it's hit and miss when it comes to the dialogue between Mark and Amber. The dialogue in general is actually really good, it's just for romance focused scenes it's a mixed bag, including janky kissing animations, haha. So yeah,, only the lovey dovey bits could use some work, when there's tension in the relationship, that feels more real and well done for sure. But this show honestly needs to get more credit for the well choreographed action scenes. The only additional drawback was the near death experience from last episode not being explored a lot, but yeah, not a deal breaker type of thing. Just a small nitpick. As for the main villain and conflict introduced in this episode, amazing! Loved the other scenes with the mom and dad, lots of interesting side stories coming together, plus what the show does really well is adding mystery to the characters, making you want to watch more.

Another great episode
evansjoshyr16 April 2021
This episode does not soar to the heights and twists of last episode, so don't expect it to. However, what you do get this episode is an entertaining and exciting 40 mins of television that is exceedingly tense at times (basically every scene with omni-man). There is a bit of a twist this episode, but if you've seen the trailer, it already kind of spoiled it. The best part of the episode has to be the ending, which has been well built up to and makes me very excited for next episode.

Overall, Invincible is proving to be one of the best animated shows to watch at the moment and this episode does not disapoint.

What happened? Warning: Spoilers
First of all: The thing most reviewers seem to have a problem have doesn't bother me as much. I still like Amber as a character, although she isn't too flashed out. But this story has just sooo many far fetched or unbelievable plot points.

Let's star with a minor one: Debbie is suspicious of her husband. She may even be sure he killed the other super heroes. And their blood on his costume is as good as proof. But why is the fact that the blood on his fist is older than the rest proof anything? We know he is almost invincible, so he could easily have been hit first, without bleeding and then punched someone else.. Again, Debbie is suspicious already, so it wouldn't take much to convince her, but why did it have to be such a ambiguous piece of evidence?

Amber being THIS angry at Mark for doing a reasonable thing (calling the police) is kind of annoying. But ultimately I see her point, since he hasn't been honest with her so far and she, for good reason, knows this. Still, it feels like the writers wanted her to be angry with him more for plot convenience.

The reveal that William and Rick felt strange.. William was talking about Rick as if they had barely ever seen each other before and both acted as if nothing happened between them yet.

D. A. Sinclair was the most ridiculously over the top one-dimensional bad guy I have seen in a while. It also is a ridiculously big coincidence he happened to be at the same university that Mark visited, only overshadowed by the even bigger coincidence of Doug escaping at exactly this time.

Mark being completely ignorant about Rick being kidnapped and almost hanging up on William even though he was obviously terrified is simply out of character.

But undoubtably the worst thing is William going in the sewer. WRITERS: PLEASE STOP DOING THIS! Everyone hates it! This made me so mad I had to write in caps lock. No one in their right mind would do this! No matter how desperate you are and how much you fear for the lives of your loved ones, it doesn't mean you shut down any brain function..

Apart from that, it was an okay episode. There was really nothing great to balance out these flaws, therefore my relatively low rating.

The only reason this episode wasn't boring was the ending, furthered the plot.

More Damien Darkblood, Less Amber, please.
jamericanbeauty24 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Please stop trying to make an Amber/Mark love story happen. It's not happening. They have no chemistry and no reason to be together. Their/her scenes are painful. She's miserable, unlikable and negative. Mark's a positive, happy guy who always tries to do the right thing but he will never be able to please her. No one can please an Amber. Put him with Eve already. She knows him inside out, and their chemistry is effortless. The college campus storyline was pointless and disconnected from all the previous episodes and killed the high momentum from an electric Episode 5.

Yes, This episode might not have twists and turns like the other episodes but it is an extremely important episode for the character development for the characters.

Do We Really Need Padding In An 8-Episode Series?
Gislef27 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with setting up a big mystery in episode 1 ("Why did Omni-Man kill the Guardians?") means that season 1 is kinda long and padded. First because we the viewers pretty much figure out why (because Omni-Man is a Viltrumite, and they're conquest types) and we're just waiting for the characters in the show to catch up.

The other thing is that it's not that complicated a mystery. Watching Debbie and now Art deal with it is interesting. But it doesn't make much of an episode. So we have a lot of padding with Robot, and Monster Girl, and Black Samson, and the Mauler Twins, and Cecil, and Donald, and Damien, and Atom Eve, and Sinclair, and an Egyptian cult and it's Master, and Seequids, that doesn't have much to do with the mystery.

Yes, I know it's all going to come together in the last two episodes, when Cecil puts together his ragtag stopgap measures against Omni-Man. And probably in later seasons. But we're not watching those later seasons, we're watching this one.

This episode is the best example. Yes, it's a "stop and catch your breath" kinda episode. But it brings Will to the forefront. And we just haven't seen that much of Will. Plus Mark suggesting they go see a movie highlights one of the problems with their relationship on-screen. Have we actually seen much of them being friends? What do they do together? Apparently, nothing. It undermines any feeling that the Mark/Will friendship might have.

The show is called 'Invincible', for Pete's sake. Not 'Robot and Monster Girl'. When the plot focuses on the latter, as it so often does, it feels like a distraction from the main event.

Then again, so does the Mark/Debbie relationship. First, the "Do I or don't I tell my family and loved ones my secret identity" is a trope of long-standing, and the production staff isn't doing anything new with it. Dramas are based on "dramatic conflict". Really. Look it up. Mark and Amber, if they're still together, are always going to have a conflict between them.

Look at Superman marrying Lois Lane. Or Mary Jane marrying Peter Parker? They still have "I have a super-powered mate, and conflicts. Take 'Bewitched'. It's based on the concept of a super-powered spouse and her non-super-powered spouse dealing with. Did the conflicts between Samantha and Darrin go away? No. They changed. And with Mark and Amber, we're seeing the same ole stuff we've seen a dozen times already. There's no parody, no homage. The relationship is just... there. I wouldn't mind it if the production staff said new about the whole secret ID/loved ones thing. But... they don't. It just feels like dumping more on Mark, and I can watch CW to see young superheroes get dumped on.

Heck, look at Debbie and Nolan. They have an "open" relationship secret ID-wide. So did Josef and Olga. At least the production staff did/is doing something new and innovative with them. Mark and Amber? Not so much.

'Invincible' does perk up in the last two episodes, when we return to the central conceit of basically, "What if Superman went bad?" There's irony, and comedy, and a different point of view. When 'Invincible' strays from that, it's just same ole same ole. And it's not that thrilling.

As for this episode... okay, it's a college student turning dead people into "Reanimen". The villain seems stupid. "I'll abduct someone in the middle of his conversation on the phone." Wha? Ezra Miller doesn't bring much to the voice role, and I hope the production staff thinks they got the value of what they undoubtedly had to pay for him. And once again we're left to wonder, what are Invincible's power levels? In the next episode he takes out a kaiju that his father couldn't handle. Here, three cyborgs give him grief.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Pretty solid episode
Brettyboy00725 April 2021
I know this episode was slow with them traveling to the college but there was a section of the comic that focused on this episode and did it very well. DA Sinclair was a great villain and this episode also broke two characters apart but comic readers will know it was going to happen.

Can't wait until episode 7. Almost the finale.

Amber Is Not to Blame
runrunnp31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of reviews are criticizing the character of Amber but what is she supposed to do? Mark will not tell her the truth, and for what reason? William figured it out why does it matter that Amber knows too? The issue with this episode is the pacing and the silly situations the characters get themselves into. Why is William going down into the sewer to find his friend? It makes no sense, that is just a stupid action for a reasonable person to do. There is also the issue with the unevenness of the super-powers. One episode he can throw a massive asteroid into space the next episode he finds it hard to grapple with a regular sized humanoid.

Unless Invincible learns some fighting techniques and starts using tools this by the end will become another stupid and outdated superhero production. After several revelation episodes just violence isn't enough anymore.

I see many negative reviews but i really enjoyed this episode
panagiotis199326 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Live Reaction / Review for Invincible Season 1 Episode 6: Episode 5 was absolutely amazing, I hope this one is good too. I wonder what comes next for Atom Eve. Ezra Miller voices a character in this? Damn, I didn't know. Wait is this robot villain the poor guy we saw when the episode started? If yes that's so sad. Wow, he killed himself? That's tragic. Amber has given too many chances to Mark, he has to do something to fix this mess or he is gonna lose her forever. I wonder why Omniman kept his bloody suit instead of destroying the evidence, makes no sense. Is Omniman about to get exposed? I hope so. I don't feel so good about the old guy that Nolan is drinking beers with. Damn, Debbie knows, I wanna see what Nolan will do now. Would he kill his own wife to cover his secrets? Probably not. Really good episode, my rating is 8/10.

This is the absolute worst rated episode of Invincible.

I usually just skip it on any rewatch.

And yet it still scores higher than 90% of movies or television shows.

Not so pointless
Trey_Trebuchet5 March 2022
It certainly feels like a departure from the previous episode, but I fed the comics and I know what's coming. This is all necessary in the long run. Yeah, it's fillery, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Personally I thought it was a good episode. I don't hate Amber although I hope she's more fleshed out in the next couple of episodes. Nolan is getting gradually creepier, Eve is beautiful and off doing what she loves, and to my surprise, William gets a few good moments. I may like him more in this show already than I did in the comic books.

Not great, but still good. And necessary...

Very entertaining with bad writing
shakedatjunk17 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Overall another entertaining episode, mainly due to the characters. Almost all the characters in this show are strong and enjoyable to watch on screen, and each conversation holds a certain level of weight to it.

The fights and action were brilliant as always, secrets were revealed, and the motives of many characters are still an intriguing mystery.

This episode however has some mad problems. The scene in the classroom took a little too long, the villain of the week was pointless and throwaway even though his technology may not be completely be, so in the end the classroom scene seems dragged on.

Why did there happen to be a super villain at the exact college Mark was visiting that managed to escape that exact moment that he was in that area?

Why would his best friend climb down into the sewer when he was already sure something happened to Rick after he found his phone on the ground? Literally just about anyone would call the cops in that situation, no one would go down there by themselves nor should they.

Also the created cyborgs physical abilities seemed to be very inconsistent. Somehow they were slow enough for kids to dodge their attacks and weak enough not to crush necks even holding them, yet they're strong enough and fast enough to take on Invincible at the same time? Big cap. Also I thought the villain removed their emotions, so Rick being reached and able to dissolve the situation at the end seemed to make no sense.

Overall a good episode with some really bad and lazy writing. The mystery, characters, and action carried the whole episode. 7/10.
